This music is totally played by ear and feeling. .....this is the sound of D.C.. ....mumbo sauce.......Georgia ave......madness connection.....howard university. ...I miss D.C.. ....
HELL YEAH! WHEN I VISITED LONDON IN 1989 I WAS SURPRISED HOW MUCH THEY LOVED GO-GO. WHILE THE REST OF THE WORLD WAS BEING INTRODUCED TO HIP HOP AND DETROIT DISCO... LISTEN TO SOUL TO SOUL AND ETC. YOU CAN HEAR THE GOGO.
Benny, Go-Go Mickey, Maniac, Mike Muse, Dave & Jungle Boogie, da Best EVER. This is Classic. R.I.P Lil Benny. All you youngins learn & know your history. Essence Legends & Rare Essence the best and the wickedest go-go band still after 35-36 years. Rare Essence still packs the house from wall to wall and always did. R. E. 4 Life
As for lead talker, there is only Funk or Benny, period. Funk is the standard bearer cause his vocal style is what everybody imitated and Benny was the Cab Calloway of Go-Go, he was a for real Bandleader. Benny wanted outfits and choreographed moves and precision. God Bless all the Go-Go bands of my youth because they are part of the soundtrack of my life from 12 years old til 45 now. They are part of us and we are part of them...
Now I'll be the 1st to admit that many of the early Go-Go Bands had excellent conga players, it just so happened that Jungle Boogie & Mickey both played for the most popular bands in the city. (RE & Ayre Rayde) Brothers and sisters, listen to other old-school conga players like Rock Steady, Skin Tight, Foxy Brown, Spanky, Walker Redds, and you will notice each drew from each other but had their own unique pockets.
If you from a certain era, then you gonna go with what you were raised on. I know that Mickey is a great percussionist, I know that Mickey played both congas and rolling toms so he did what both Boogie and David did by himself and not taking anything from Mickey or Foxy or Heartbeat or Steady or Walker or none of those great players, but in my heart, Boogie is my dude. He was the first I heard and the first I saw live and he is just who I think of first when the subject comes up.
I can say I had the privilege and pleasure 2 party with the greatest musicians from the DMV they can play with anybody look at the history of the ledgens that came from here DMV all day every day 😎🕊
Go go mickey you are good with your hands you are so fine the way you rock them boggoo do the dam thing you put your all in what you are doing you get an a and some from me mrs ellis
Mickey took it to another level, redefined, advanced, REFINED, and some more shit. Yeah I've seen Jungle Boogie, Mickey, Loveboat Boogie, Spanky, Rocking Ron (AM/FM), Rock Steady, Foxy Rob, Foxy Brown, Heartbeat (that was my MAN), Walker Redds, Go Go Billy (Petworth), Howdy Doody (Prophecy), White Boy Elroy, Funky Stuff Wayne, Wink, Sauce, Smoke, T-Bone, Elmo, Big Chuck, Kenny when he was on Progression and Proper Utensils...Mickey on his best vs their best? Mickey all day.
Let’s be realistic Jungle Boogie is the best to ever do it much respect to Mickey a real musician in his own right also both in different eras both are GoGo legends but there would not be Mickey without Jungle Boogie what I appreciate is the real respect Mickey shows for his teacher a lot of class anyway two of the best ever RE for life!!!!!!
And even after I saw Fox at the Coliseum with the white gloves on and they turned out the lights and Foxy was getting busy and all you could see was his hands like glowing in the dark, even after that incredible performance, Boogie still my dude just like Sugarfoot Rick is my drummer even though JuJu is a monster and Footz had that pocket. And ain't nobody f'n with T-I-N-O on the guitar (respect to Whiteboy). Horns is hard too but I'll take DC on sax any day and Funky Ned/Sugar Bear is a tie.
Vegas now, Hyattsville back in the day right behind PG Plaza. Love GoGo . Used to make that move up to Chillum for that smoke and some of that Captain Stubbing. Went to the Quanset down on Southern and some spots in Suitland. Backyard, Junkyard, Essence, and of course Chuck. Miss GoGo like bad out here.
I wouldn't necessarily say that Rare Essence set the standard. Let's go back to the years between 1979 and 1981 and you'll see that many bands drew from each other. Rare Essence was mainly a cover-band (79-80) until bands like Trouble Funk, EU, Chance, AM/FM, and Redds & The Boys created their own grooves, pockets and eventually writing original songs. If anyone should be remembered as an innovator it's Mark "Godfather" Lawson who wrote for both Ayre Rayde and Rare Essence.
Mickey is the best conga player ever in go-go history without a shadow of a doubt. Slim be crankin like shit and couldn't nobody touch dude...He got his own song...If you don't believe me look at the Live at Capital Centre video when he played both congas and roller toms...The bama is nice..
Even though im a country ass nickel.I use to live on simms place. Catch my people out there on Florida ave ever Friday when getting off on the d-4 or what the d-8 coming through.
I have to disagree with you Never83! I honestly felt that Jungle Boogie, Rock Steady, and Skin Tight (Petworth) held much better pockets than Go-Go Mickey during the same era. I even have debates with friends that Go-Go Spanky from Class had faster hands than Smoke.
Man whatever. Grandmaster Melle Mel is credited with being the progenitor of the rapping style that people borrowed from heavily through the early 80s, then Rakim came along and took it to another level - but you never hear people talking about Melle Mel is the greatest emcee ever. Respect Ty for being credited with essentially creating the pocket, but he is nowhere near Mickey's level. Mickey in 1989 is completely different than Mickey in 1996, for example.
That's real go-go music right there!!!
Gotta appreciate the two of the best whoever did it...and both representing THE WICKETS BAND ALIVE!!!!!!
This music is totally played by ear and feeling. .....this is the sound of D.C.. ....mumbo sauce.......Georgia ave......madness connection.....howard university. ...I miss D.C.. ....
they sell mumbo sauce now!

Jungle Boogie made the essence sound, and GO-GO Mickey took it from there
Benny, Go-Go Mickey, Maniac, Mike Muse, Dave & Jungle Boogie, da Best EVER. This is Classic. R.I.P Lil Benny. All you youngins learn & know your history. 2 of the greatest Go Go legends that ever did it. Jungle Boogie and Go Go Mickey ya dig. Mentor and Disciple.
This is a monumental moment!
God Bless Go Go Mickey for helping us all out. He blessin us first
Now I'll be the 1st to admit that many of the early Go-Go Bands had excellent conga players, it just so happened that Jungle Boogie & Mickey both played for the most popular bands in the city. Damn this joint is on POINT.....
Two legends doing their thing!!!
If you from a certain era, then you gonna go with what you were raised on. Like GoGo Bouncey said; i knew i had to step my game up when i saw Mickey play lefthanded like that !!
I can say I had the privilege and pleasure 2 party with the greatest musicians from the DMV they can play with anybody look at the history of the ledgens that came from here DMV all day every day 😎🕊
Mickey you are awsomr dude number 1 fan ms ellis you and your son you guys rock later
Go Go Mickey is a true legend and I give him his propers. But it was Jungle Boogie who laid down the foundation and was Go Go Mickey's mentor.
Go go mickey you are good with your hands you are so fine the way you rock them boggoo do the dam thing you put your all in what you are doing you get an a and some from me mrs ellis

Jungle Boogie is the Michael Jordan of conga’s and Mickey is the Kobe Bryant
And even after I saw Fox at the Coliseum with the white gloves on and they turned out the lights and Foxy was getting busy and all you could see was his hands like glowing in the dark, even after that incredible performance, Boogie still my dude just like Sugarfoot Rick is my drummer even though JuJu is a monster and Footz had that pocket.
