Getting Organised - Rockhoppers - building a Mining Org

- Continuing on with our Getting Organised series we're going to take a look at mining focussed fleets for 5, 30 and 100 person Orgs. Don't forget, this isn't meant to send you running out to the pledge store - it's more a theory crafting exercise around what end game fleets might be sensible for different sized groups.
In this vid I'm using an awesome tool; Fleetview, from www.starship42.com to render 3D models of the ships. Check it out to build your own dream fleets, and take an up close look at the ship models.

I think a large mining org should also have an 890J to use for meetings, rest, and recreation in between mining runs, and of course for the mining-run after-party! It'll be interesting to see how this discussion will evolve as more ships like the Expanse are added to this profession.
As a small Org. you could start out using a Taurus, to earn enough to get the 2 ROC miners then a 315p ingame and then grind to get the Liberator. If you have some pledge cash, you could start out with a Liberator for transport, cargo and base. Then get some ROC miners and a 315p as a scout for finding resources. Work up from there to a prospector and Arrows for protection. Another way to go W/liberator is an Entrepreneur Pack that will give you mining, salvage and repair/refuel in one pack with LTI, then CCU the rover in the pack to Liberator, then it will have LTI too. Just throwing some ideas out there. I do like the Idea of the Liberator for a smallish Org. it's like a mini Kraken and very versatile .
Dude I'm really loving your content, feel like your hitting a good niche in somewhat grounded theory crafting for org guides. Hope to see similar content in the future!
Cheers mate! One of the things I like the most about the open development of the game is that it provides the room to test stuff out, and see what might work.
@@LoudGuns yea exactly, I've built up an alliance which is basically centred around the purpose of growing with the development of Star Citizen, too see the possibilities, test them out in the current game state and put some kind of game plan in action for the future. Which is why I find your videos really handy to get another perspective on large/multi org operations.
I agree you're going to need someone that knows what they're doing defending your org; As soon as they enable ejecting mined materials out of mining ships piracy is going to really focus on asteroid miners.
Yeah and long range scanning might make it less reliable to disappear in the vastness of space. One of the things that excites me the most about the future is the truly mmo elements - different orgs working together (and against each other)!
I wander the ground gem seeking play is also a possible viable end game loop. For less than 10-crew operation, all it needs is a scanning scout like a 125, then fill the rest with max or conny with 2 ORC. And let the max go back and forth. Even a cutty black with a ROC is also could be attached to this operation.
I agree about using the range of mining ship sizes, that same logic could be applied to include Vulcans (versus Starfarer) in fleets of any size, and provide some light repair capability as well.
Similarly, as you suggest a variety of cargo ships for moving product to sell, it might be good to blur the line between your cargo and combat ships, by choosing turret-focused defensive craft that also have decent cargo capacity as escorts and operational perimeter. Definitely the Nautilus for asteroid operations, but perhaps the Perseus, Hammerhead or even Valkyrie rather than Polaris.
After all, if pirates come at you with a capital ship offense, half measures won't do and you'll probably scatter rather than strike. A mixed fleet with many turrets affords a credible defense against non-capital attackers without needing to give combat training and logistics much focus.
If you think you'll be attacked by capital ships, then it's time to hire specialists to defend.
Yeah, the main use for the majority of the starfarers here is actually as refiners as opposed to refuelling. I’d view those as placeholders as I’m really hoping we get a capital or large sized refinery ship at some point.
The combat is a bit tricky- and maybe you’re right in that a hammerhead or two for anti-fighter (or maybe a hammerhead and 2x perseus so you have anti-corvette in there as well) could be a better option. Generally though I’d really suggest bigger mining guilds still outsource protection to a PMC.
thanks for the mining lessons. Now I own a Mole, and thx for all info you give us!! Mining to the OST from LUCASARTS "The Dig" is awesome! @Norway
Cheers Gunnar! Yeah you’ve got to have a decent soundtrack for mining, I’ll check that one out on my next run!
Argo is probably missing a solo mining ship and its own fuel counterpart. For a mining Org I personally would love focusing on that ship's aesthetic, as MISC and Argo really clash too much in style to make sense in the same fleet... the Starfarer is also ugly as sin and I hate even the thought of being in one that's not an exploded piece of salvage. I would suggest expanding the Org's focus to mining and salvage, since currently mining in space plays very close with also salvage gameplay, and Drake combines much better with Argo in looks (of course, this is an old video so can't pretend much).
An Org of 5 fits almost entirely in a Mole, put 3 in it and you can have the other two man a Vulture or a 2-person fighter for protection. An org of 20 can have two to three Moles and two Vultures offloading their found salvage into a Cutlass Black, that might be carrying a Dragonfly so the Vultures aren't completely unprotected if the Cutlass needs to take off in defense of either of the Moles. The Cutlass Black can also transport a ROC, though of course the use case is dubious when you have Moles. I don't see the reason to elaborate how you could expand further, because I don't see the reason to do so with what's currently in the game, mostly it's just going to be expanding your operations laterally with more of the mentioned ships. The Reclaimer currently is worse than the Vulture until the salvage profession is developed, and the only notes about it would be to have a fighter on call or wear your best smile in case you're visited by pirates.
Good content mate, look forward to one of these fleets soon!!
Cheers mate - yeah the day when we can see some properly huge org fleets roll out together is going to be epic.
I might give up on my plan for an Orion and consider a Carrack instead. There is no way I would ever be able to use that thing. I'm probably kidding myself about the Endeavor too.
You could always consider finding a crew to help you out? I’d imagine more and more as we go closer to release folks are going to simply buy the base game package - as long as you treat people fairly and pay a decent cut I don’t think the plan for an Orion or an Endeavour has to die :D
ErikP I did the same man. There's just too much coordinating and manpower needed to successfully run that damn behemoth. It's definitely an all hands on deck kind of ship. Tbh I bought it because I knew it would increase in cost. But as of now, I upgraded it to "drumroll"...
The A2. 😂🤣🤣
Something about that ship just calls to me... It's priced extremely high but it's literally one of a kind in what it's capable of. I hope I don't regret the upgrade when 3.15/16 drops.
@@Mach1Greeble planning to rent them out and sit in your fancy apartment on Orison counting your money? :D
Great stuff man can’t wait to be able to build these fleets
Indeed - when you see how cool it is to have a few ships QT around together, it’s hard to imagine what a full strength fleet rolling out is going to feel like!
I think you may have short-changed the Kracken. It has at least in rumor, refining capability. Keep in mind it can also land on a planet or moon. Thus it can be a forward operating base for a mining operation. If you add a Pioneer to the mix you could use your prospectors and moles, to gather materials to build structures on that planet or moon for in place refining and storage.
Any mining org that size is going to need a home base, mostly for storing product until prices are right but having it refine a lot of those non explosive materials the Orions will be mining would be good too
Great video with lots to think about.
I’m looking forward to the collection bags /bins on the Prospector being removable when full. So that a friend in a small medium sized cargo ship can collect and transport to a refinery. While the Prospector carry’s on mining.
Yeah that’s going to be really interesting to see on the Mole and Prospector, particularly once paired with refining ships as well.
Again great content! Keep it up lad!
Cheers Sean - thanks mate!
I came, I saw, I liked
Haha thanks mate - all good with you?
@@LoudGuns all good!! Just polishing my mole.. waiting for the right time to mine again with the gang

@@LoudGuns lol sunday? Someone is confident! Best wishes.
@@addermoth I was feeling more confident 2 days ago than I am now :D
lets make THIS org! 100 person looks amazing and fun! Great video - very thought provoking. Is the Starfarer a capable cargo ship!?
Soo many inflection points that can and do lead fleets to change. Shame to think how little we know about the ships we dont know about. Tells me how far we have to go.
I’d bet good money the next ARGO ship will be a refinery ship, and that refinery ships will be instrumental to mining org infrastructure
Big potential, I personally would absolutely love a capital from Argo but I wouldn’t be surprised if an Argo refinery is roughly the same size as the Mole and Raft. We have a small refinery on the roadmap (probably Misc) and the Starfarer will fill the large slot.
@@LoudGuns Yeah I have to say when I bought the game there were no Argo ships and I thought Crusader had the most beautiful ships, but ever since I saw the Mole and now the Raft, Argo’s utilitarian design is undoubtedly my favourite by far
The MISC Starfarer is for refuelling and gas refining, not mineral refining as far as I'm aware.
It’s a bit of a long vid but in this recent SC Live the devs started talking about how the Starfarer is getting ore and mineral refining capabilities - ruclips.net/video/pnPBHdHWSM4/видео.html
So far I have a Perseus, Scorpious, C2, And MSR. I would like to add a mining ship. I’m in a trading org that has a military wing. But it would be fun to go on the occasional mining trip.
Prospector or roc
A prospector’s not a bad idea, but tbf they’re pretty cheap in game so with the fleet you already have I’d be tempted to say view it as something to pickup for UEC?
@@LoudGuns Is agree with you on that. I’m
more seriously considering picking up an Orion.
@@kellym3610 Cool - yeah I have an Orion earmarked personally, currently got a C2 I’m waiting to CCU from. The thing I do want to see is what other mining ships they release - at a minimum I’m expecting something that sits in the large bracket between the Mole and the Orion.
We were chatting about the Orion last night and I do think having the crew will be quite important. The max crew of 7 is pretty low, but I think it’ll be one of those where 7 means 7 (as opposed to the Mole which can be solo’d but also works perfectly well with 2 or 3). Just the sheer size of the Orion is going to mean you aren’t going to be running between stations imo. However, as long as you’re happy that you’ve got the crew I reckon it’ll be a serious money maker.
Another great video and I’ve greatly enjoyed the interactions and sense of community that comes from the Discord channel.
I’m still confused as to who I have to kill to get an invite to join the org but I will keep attempting to randomly kill members until it shows up.
Hopefully sorted now with no randomised death lotteries :D
My little fleet is a bit of as much as possible, in terms of trades. I'm sure I will change my mind over some ships, before release. Long way to go yet.
Yeah there’s plenty of time to figure out where and what to focus on. Early on I had a bit of a yard sale of ships, but ended up focussing a bit more once our org started to firm up and I saw what gaps there were.
Is it confirmed anywhere that starfarer will be able to refine more than just quantanium?
Yes but it will only do one or the other at a time. If you tell it to refine Quantanium then it will throw away any Borase.
Everything’s pretty unclear at the moment but John Crewe repeatedly referred to the starfarer refining minerals and metals in a recent vid from CIG. For now until we get more details (and until we see the additional refinery ships) I’d just view those starfarers as a placeholder for whichever refining ship turns out to be the best.
Hey man love your content. Recently I've been trying to solo mole mine on Lyria, what are your reccomended builds for quant? I've been shifting between 2surge stampede and focus/vaux/surge. But both have a lot of faults haha
Hey mate, thanks! I’m currently running all the lasers as lancets in my solo build - I use the side ones (2&3) to crack the rock and have them both set as surge and stampede x2, then I have the middle as my second stage laser with Brandt’s and one or 2 XTR-XL’s to improve the speed of extracting.
@@LoudGuns thanks for the reply! Ill have to try the 2 surge method more then, unless you mean 2 stampedes?
Hey love your stuff, have you guys considered a partnership with UEXcorp?
Mole has 5 times the range and only costs as much as two prospectors
2.5 prospectors but yeah good point on the range. Personally I love the Mole, and it’s perfectly solo-able / really nice to operate with 2 people while having 3 prospectors worth of capacity. We also tend to do a thing when in pairs or threes where the second (and third if we have them) person jumps in a scouting ship until we find something worth mining - then we crew up in the mole to break. The pilot then takes the run back to the refinery solo while the others go back to scouting. Keeps things nice and efficient.
@@LoudGuns You pretty much described our set up. Though we go with 2 to 3 in the mole and one to two in prospectors. Can't wait for mining missions and a more dynamic economy. Getting a bit weary always looking for quant as it's so lucrative
You say Scotland but you don't have a Scottish accent. Also being from the UK I'm trying to work out where your from but you don't have an accent. Looking at getting my hands on an Orion later today at the IAE. You say in this video that the Orion will be belt bound (understandable due to its size) so am wondering if the asteroid belts will respawn at all or at regular intervals.
Haha, it’s actually a bit of a bastardised accent as opposed to none I guess. I grew up in the midlands but then lived for a long time in the south west before moving to Scotland.
@@LoudGuns WOW I lived in Leicester for a while and now live in Cornwall. I have friends living in Scotland and have often thought about moving there.
