HIER LEBTEN EINMAL 1500 MENSCHEN - HEUTE MENSCHENLEER: Relikte der Sowjetunion 🔎 Lost Place Urbex

Wir reisen weiter in die russische Bergarbeitersiedlung Barentsburg. Gegründet wurde der Ort 1920 - und zwar von den Niederländern, die die Siedlung nach einem ihrer polaren Seehelden, Willem Barentsz, benannten. Der Kohleabbau lohnte sich für sie wirtschaftlich allerdings nicht, weshalb sie ihren Besitz an die russische Gesellschaft Trust Arktikugol verkauften, was nichts anderes als „arktische Kohle“ bedeutet - dieser befindet sich bis heute in russischem Staatsbesitz.
Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde Barentsburg fast vollständig zerstört, von den heutigen Gebäuden stammt ein Großteil aus den 1970er und 80er Jahren, als die Sowjetunion noch eine Großmacht war.Die Spuren dieser Vergangenheit sieht man heute noch an allen Ecken und Enden! Auch wenn manche Gebäude aussehen als wären sie auf Hochglanz poliert und man einiges an Geld in die Entwicklung des Ortes gesteckt hat wie z.B. in den Sportpalast mit der Schwimmhalle oder in unser frisch renoviertes Hotel lässt es sich nicht leugnen, dass Barentsburg eine sterbende Siedlung ist. In den 1990 Jahren lebten und arbeiteten hier einmal 1500 Menschen, heute - Stand September 2024 - sind es nur noch 340, Tendenz weiter fallend, auch auf Grund des russisch-ukrainischen Krieges sowie der eigentlich schon lange nicht mehr rentablen Kohleförderung aus der Mine.
We continue our journey to the Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg. The place was founded in 1920 - by the Dutch, who named the settlement after one of their polar sea heroes, Willem Barentsz. However, coal mining was not economically viable for them, which is why they sold their property to the Russian company Trust Arktikugol, which means nothing other than “Arctic coal” - which is still owned by the Russian state to this day.
Barentsburg was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, and most of the current buildings date from the 1970s and 80s, when the Soviet Union was still a major power. The traces of this past can still be seen everywhere today! Even though some of the buildings look like they have been polished to a high gloss and a lot of money has been put into the development of the place, such as the sports palace with the swimming pool or our newly renovated hotel, there is no denying that Barentsburg is a dying settlement. In the 1990s, 1,500 people lived and worked here, today - as of September 2024 - there are only 340, and the trend continues to fall, also due to the Russian-Ukrainian war and the fact that coal production from the mine has actually no longer been profitable for a long time.
