*Update* I learned later on that it makes no difference in high RPM. It only makes a difference at idol.
Cold starts are noticeably different giving a much louder lower rumble than stock.
I put 10,000 miles on this e46 after doing the mod and had no issues with it!
I recommend trying it out for a week and seeing if you notice a difference, it is a completely reversible mod. So if you don’t like it switch it back!

The story behind the valve is simple - Fuel economy and emissions. Valve closed means no need for full exhaust push. The system knows you are running on smaller power need so the valve stays closed while the DISA and other parts in the engine calculate the best consumption and emissions according to your need. But once you hit the pedal all optimalisation systems are on stand down and do nothing to allow the engine to create maximum output. For that you also need a lot of space for all the exhaust fumes thus the vent opening.
Thats it.
If you want more sound get a different end muffler or a complete exhaust kit from headers to end muffler.... or if you are on a budget just cut off the end muffler and replace it with pipes. If you are on a really reeeeeaaaally tight budget then just take the end muffler, cut it open, remove everything inside, spot weld it back together and then put it back in. Gonna soud a little like crap and probably annoying for everybody around you (including yourself after the fun has left and the daily feel kicked back in) but hey.... it is an option :)

Nice job, But i think the birds chirps were louder.
You won't hear it much in neutral. Go for a drive and it will sound louder at low revs. The mid range to high is the same sounding tho.

I did this on my 2001 330i and at low revs between 2-3ish its loud AF. (Well mine is) after the mod. Mid range to high revs sound the same. In low revs it makes a big difference. I got a nice little pop and crackle too when I downshift from 4-3 and 3-2nd. (Its auto but still sounds nice)
Be warned on road trips tho, if the cars sitting at low revs it will drone with the windows down.

Valve opens when you accelerate. You're literally doing nothing by doing this. I believe Yamaha has this same valve on their sport bikes. Called the ex-up valve. It opens fully at full acceleration.

NO NEED TO DO ANYTHING PEOPLE! The valve on the other exhaust is closed until it warms up. If you wait there for a few min you can see and hear it happen.

Any car with a hose u can remove from the butterfly valve but I'm pretty sure they dont have them on 4 cylinders but I could be wrong
