Two notes. First, it's only against the law in the US and possibly a handful of other countries, but in the UK, they have enough sense to allow their citizens to be normal human beings and transfer movies they already paid for into format that will last for decades. Second, thanks to Fred Rogers, anything recorded over the airwaves is fair game.

It's not illegal to transfer commercial VHS tapes as long as you're not selling them. It's no different from ripping CDs to MP3 or DVDs to MP4. It's not terribly practical to do it in most cases as the tapes are likely somewhat damaged and a new copy of most of these videos will have a higher resolution in DVD or BluRay than you'd get out of a VHS tape, but there's still plenty of VHS movies out there which don't have proper re-releases or where they edited them in some undesirable way.
The main issue is that some of them use macrovision as protection, which requires more expensive equipment to properly transfer.

Thankfully we can now tell RUclips when we're tired of having a video pushed on us. And, there is also an "already watched" check box--because watching a video doesn't stop them from bothering you about it. Yet, it isn't completely satisfying, and persistent suggests are still a bit annoying.

SuperDashRendar No. Not correct. Although the prohibition on backups for personal use only is rarely enforced, the strictest interpretation is no back-up copies, unless the format is endangered (cylinder records, wire recordings) and of historical value, in which case archival backup copies are allowed.
"Reproducing a VHS to DVD without the prior permission of the rights-holder is an infringement of copyright. This kind of reproduction is not exempt because it is not “fair use” as defined in Section 107 of the Copyright Code and it does not qualify as a lawful reproduction under Section 108 of the Copyright Code."

Everyone should make sure to render their videos as 50 fps or 60 fps. For me 60p vs 30p makes much more difference than HD vs SD. Try and see the difference, it's substantial. Unless you make it so, the h264 encoder will eat up all the natural smooth movements, and you will wonder how come your VHS still looks better, even though you may have used the best hardware available. Also, most of the cheap tv tuner card with the composite video input are crappy, their capturing quality is as if you are doing a 320x240 video. Use a capture card that costs $70+, and you should get far better picture.

I just hooked up my cassette player (walkman) to the computer, using an audio cable. I plugged one end into the headphone jack and the other end into the microphone jack on the computer. Then I just used a recording program, such as Audacity (which is free) to record it. Just hit play on the cassette player, then hit record on the program and it will record what is on the cassette. That's how I transferred my grandfather's cassettes to the computer.

I don't agree that VHS is a dead format. You can still find brand new VHS movies on Amazon.com. I recently bought Alfred Hitch's Rear Window , BRAND NEW on Amazon.com and they look better than DVD'S, and last longer too. Just several years ago, everyone said that vinyl records were dead too until they got a taste of how short of a life span music cd's have. Vinyl is back! and I have purchased several NEW vinyl LP's and 45's from Amazon. these are not left-overs, but NEW! HOT OFF THE PRESS. CD's, and DVD's are ending up in the same junk pile as 8 track tapes.

Let me say this....VHS tapes, if they are cared for and stored properly, will last longer than DVD's. That's right. Both blank CD's and DVD's end up deteriorating in as little as 5 years. They don't last 100 years like we once thought. I've burned DVD's and CD's (all kinds of different brands) and several years later, the layer the info is recorded on starts to bubble and flake away, rendering them unplayable. While on the other hand, I have VHS tapes that are THIRTY YEARS OLD and are still as playable as they were when I first bought them. The same goes for vinyl records. Vinyl will outlast any CD's and one day people will regret throwing out their old vinyl and VHS tapes when they realize DVD and CD discs do not last for more than 15-20 years at the most.

    • @writerpatrick
      @writerpatrick 6 лет назад +1

It varies a lot on the quality of the media to begin with. I've had decades old DVDs that still work fine. I've only run into about 1% of data DVDs and CDs that are unreadable, but that could have happened during the burning. Tapes are better at tolerating damage, so that a 5% loss doesn't make them unreadable. Although with digital recordings it's easy to make multiple copies to prevent complete loss.

Then take a 3.5mm auxiliary cable (two 3.5mm plugs on each end) and plug one end into the headphone jack and the other into the light red/pink Microphone INPUT jack (There's also a red/pink Output) then look for an audio recorder on your device and start the audio recorder right before you play the cassette and it will save as an MP3.

just to point out, it is not ilegal to make a copy of a movie or T.V. show as stated in the video. U.S. copyright law allows for a backup copy of any intellectual or copyrighted material for personal use so long as you own and retain a Legal original copy (weather it is in working order or not) how ever if you should lose possession of the original (sell it, lose it etc.) you must then destroy the copy.

Nice to know. But, back when I had cable T.V., I bought DVD recorders (2) that also have VHS driver and can go from tape to DVD. Of course, copy protection garbles pre-recorded media, that's not something I care to convert anyway (even though some would argue that I paid for the content and the invention of a new format shouldn't prevent me from transfer for personal use).

It is not a dead format. Believe me there are many collectors of VHS! Also there are some straight to VHS movies that never made it onto DVD(mostly horror flicks) and that makes them very collectable. Another thing is that on some movies they permantly delete scenes that would probably never be able to be seen again if it wasn't for VHS! There are even people that love VHS so much that they got permission to transfer 1000's of VHS over, and they are putting the originals into what is going to be a museum of sorts...

Unfortunately for me, the VHS tapes I used to own are back at my old former home. My dad and I had to move from there in October of 2019 for personal reasons. I wanted to bring the VHS tapes with me, but my dad wouldn't let me as he said they would take up too much room here. I wish I had brought some of them with me.
I especially regret not bringing one particular VHS that had a recording of an old vintage documentary about dogs. The problem is I can't even remember the name of it, and every time I mention it to other people, nobody believes the documentary even existed at all. They think I either dreamed it or I'm having what they call a "Mandala effect".
But, I swear on my *LIFE* that I had that program recorded on one of my VHS tapes! If only I had it with me now. I could have used it to transfer it to my computer (as long as I could gather the equipment necessary to do that), upload it to RUclips, and prove I was right all along. Plus, I've been wanting to enjoy that documentary again. I haven't seen it since we last had a VCR player long before we moved away from our original home...probably either in the late 2000s or the early 2010s.
I can still remember bits and pieces from the documentary, but I can't remember all of it. I tried searching for this vintage documentary many times online, but no results gave me the one I wanted. Searching for it gave me nothing but major frustrations.

VHS was a most awesome format once perfected. Only problem is it was a scanning tv type device for cathode ray scanning TVs. There aren’t much left. They were quite complicated but for the time they were incredible. Just like 8 -track players took us from mono AM radios in our cars to stereo, VHS made it so you could take a movie home and watch it over and over plus going from 8mm film home movies of your kids to to full color tv with sound of your home stuff.
The main thing is dvds take a whole lot less room

I would just like to ask for your opinion. The captured image looks much better than after recording. Is there anything I can do to improve this?

He describes VHS as a 'Dead Format', and says at 2:11 "You've rescued these movies from a dead format". He advises recording those files to a DVD or your computer. It is the year 2020 now and both DVDs and computers themselves are now 'Dead Formats'. Everyone is streaming stuff using their smartphones, almost no one uses a computer anymore unless it is for work.
