Brilliant talk on a crucial subject. Thanks for your work in this space & for shedding light on such an important topic that affects all of us, especially the most vulnerable.
Much of what she is advocating for is very necessary, but I wanted to comment on one specific feature. The Image hashing mechanism she metioned would have to be very sophisticated and/or reversible (aka able to recreate the image). Why? Hashes like those used for checksums are "exact matches". This means the image must be unscaled or uncropped or unaltered. So how to modify this? Multi- or partial-hashing the image, which are irreversible, would be an excellent start. While the single hash will likely fix the original file from getting online, only other forms of hashing, or vectorized matching of the core/shrunken image via detail mapping using ML techniques will truly help for at least 2 decades or more. And that's the other problem. How long till the tech is beaten? All DRM is broken in a major way. So what's next for content locking?
Already are. They do not care about another person's life. If you are not apart of their opp mission to kill, steal, or destroy...they will smear u out and get people around you . Even a city to lie. That it is internet and not the street is safe enough!! Internet is and should be free place to exchange every existing and possible idea and concept, to expose oneself to most radical, extreme and most opposite to ones personality and life experiences ideas and concepts. Any censure or any sort of manipulation should be punished severely and utterly.
But that's not how Social Media algorithms work. They mostly show you content about ideologies that you already agree with rather than the new ones. They end up creating echo chambers that we shouldn't require as per your argument.

Very true, people get offended over simple words and are willing to destroy the other person's entire livelihood over things said in light spirit or comedic relief in order to feel a semblance of a power rush. 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words shall never touch me' is a sentence that should be given more significance.
@@feedbackzaloop it also happens a lot online since there is no personal touch while writing a message or a comment much like this one. Its hard to convey tone and intent and often times people understand it incorrectly which does not bode well.

Most of those figures that have risen, are from 2020 to 2021. It's almost as if something happened in that year that caused people to spend way too much time online.
Safe from what? If it's causing you problems, then log off. You can't trust a company to protect you from it's own product, and you can't trust other people to have your own best interest at heart. At the end of the day, what you do on social media is your responsibility, not everyone else's. Actually you can in a democracy. Everybody wanna be King. So if the current one misbehaves, start supporting the next big candidate. 6:20 This speakers is one sided and fails to see the benefit to anonymity and the threat of destroying anonymity creates. Applying ‘digital signatures’ and hashes onto web content destroys the foundation of an open and free exchange of information, potentially leading to reduced privacy and stifling online discourse. This speaker proposes: 1. “Financial incentives” (fines for not complying) for companies to track and manage data even more 2. Creation of an oversight board (government or private owned, both are scary) to determine what speech and content is deemed harmful (keep in mind the power this gives to kill political movements and views that are fresh and newly growing). Result; less digital rights and small marginalized group voices can be censored easily In addition, the speaker fails to mention the only companies that would adopt her proposed totalitarian policies are PRIVATE TECH COMPANIES. Harmful content will primarily exists on foreign web servers outside of western control.
This is so true. My online avator was subjected to extreme harassment. I know it is not all men but the way they just grabbed me without consent leaves me with a real lack of trust.

There is no such thing. If you give companies &/or the Gov't that power they WILL misuse it.

Yeah, the internet could be so useful for business people.
Exactly, as we have already seen. We need to take power away from people who have gone to college and rebuild our society, which they have destroyed.
Oh no things exist we can't control???
Let me guess, it involves censorship and control and an aversity towards anonymity.
Yes surely only everything which made the internet great - nothing which will destroy what it is.
We don’t need any more “control”

I’m sorry about all the annoying comments on this video Farah. I liked your talk and I agree. Take care 🙂
Who determines what is 'harmful content' or 'hate speech'? There is a difference between hate speech and speech that you hate.

Look up a dictionary, duh. But you got a point though, many people get offended by things not intended to harm.

Good content. Keep up❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Anything non-trans or non-queer should be BANNED as hate speech. There, problem solved.
The Tedx motivators are quite impressive😍👍🤩

If companies misuse customer's information on their own servers, they shouldn't have anymore control than this.
