I think, when he performed in the SNL, he was visibly nervous for some reason and couldn't get to concentrate to hit the notes and we see at the end the disappointed face he does, and i'm sure that taking off the perfomance from the internet was his choice. Now, he already has sang this song so much he's got used to it and now he's killing it!!!!

Nick Nana It may be a choice but I think it’s just because he can’t hit the note with the healthiest technique. In a lot of the clips you can see him straining his neck up and he hits the note but in a quite painful way. There is healthy throat tension and then there is vocal strain. You can tell that over time Harry has improved his technique but if he keeps straining his throat (especially with all the concerts he’s doing, singing the same song over and over again) he could damage his vocal cords in the future.
This made me so happy and proud and just emotional. I remember staying up even though I was tired af (I don't usually get tired that early but...) just to watch him on SNL I was so proud and happy for him but I noticed his disappointment he did great just was a little crackly but it was beautiful and emotional for me and then some time later I watch the second one and I felt so proud and I could see how relieved he was and I just felt even more proud I love him so much omfg
Kesha Rosé he’s adding tension on purpose, it’s not straining. He has seen a vocal coach, probably partially because of these notes specifically, and as time goes on you can definitely tell that it’s a stylistic choice and not straining! :)

He doesn't strain, he adds tension for effect. The tension he adds is one of the ways he coveys so much emotion. It's also one of the reasons people love him so much. It's a stylistic choice, and it's not bad for a voice if it's done properly.

He used to strain because of a low placement, he solved that problem but he still strains laryngeally because hes singing high tenor range while his voice is a baritenor. Hes pushing extremely to mantain that chesty tenor timbre. No amount of technique or vocal coaching can make singing that high beyond his natural vocal range safe. Thats how bon jovi permanently lost his voice. It was the one song 'living on the prayer' with its 5th octave chorus that robbed his voice

i really feel him... when i get to the upper end of my range i hesitate and tense up and end up fucking up the notes... but if i practice, use support, and relax i usually hit them way better. it makes me so happy to see artists improving their technique and being self critical. so many of them (taylor swift, ariana grande, etc... no hate) don't see the point in doing so and it honestly shows. but it can really make a difference. awesome video! ✌

I don’t think people realized how much actually goes into singing. From experience being a vocalist, on a performance day you need to do vocal warm ups, avoid eating certain things (junk food, sugary things, etc.) and avoid drinking certain things (coffee, milk, or any sugary drink) I’m sure that if Harry was able to hit it once, he can hit it anytime with the right preparation for a performance.
You can see he is a serious artist. He wanted to give his best and worked to improve. Most 'singers' nowadays don't care to get better to deserve their title and just rely on autotune. Props to Harry, he sounds great!
