James Brooks is a terrific writer and director. But how come he has only managed to do three really good movies? I mean, of course, Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets.
He is one of my very favorite filmmakers. "Terms" is probably my all-time favorite film. "Broadcast News" is one of the smartest, funniest, and most dazzling films of the last forty years. And "As Good as It Gets" is terrific and hugely entertaining. He made some good movies that didn't rise to the level of these three: "I'll Do Anything" and "Spanglish." Both were good but not masterpieces. Sadly, his last film (and Jack Nicholson's) was shockingly bad: "How Do You Know." But even the best directors are entitled to a dud. In all, his filmography is incredibly strong.
Nice piece.
Thanks

Writing a script that reaches the screen is a phenomenal achievement. Most never succeed. To do it three times? Incredible.
