Awesome system, I’m more convinced that none of us(me included) know enough about this redfield ratio where we should be talking about it with any sense of certainty or even encourage it at all. It’s 100:16:1 the 100 is Carbon, 16 Nitrogen and the 1 phosphorus.

It seems the Redfield ratio is not very important to strictly adhere to. Scientists once (!) sampled seawater somewhere near a reef and came to this Redfield ratio. I believe I heard there was no follow-up research done so it may that the place they took this sample has had a huge influence on the ratio. I think I heard this info from Fauna Marin Germany.
@@ReefUnderTheRoof I'm having issues with my macro slowly dying after adding kalk dosing and CO2 scrubber like he is doing. Coral growth are great, my nutrients are perfect. Can't figure out why my dragon's breath is dying.
@@ReefUnderTheRoof my thoughts were kalk removes some phosphates and macros need CO2.. My dragon's breath were thriving until I started kalk and CO2 scrubbing. They get strong flow, 200 par, NO3 ~15 and PO4 0.1.
I’ve listened tot his twice and maybe I missed it but the treatment on the elegance corals wasn’t mentioned. Curious if it’s a dip, do you keep the coral in the antibiotics for a few days in a hospital tank? What was the actual treatment?

Beautiful tank as always, but you lost me when you went mad scientist with treatments. However, I will say: good job on using an isolated dip bucket or tank, rather than doing a whole tank treatment. That alone, reduces a large amount of secondary exposure to the reef system. And helps prevent future headaches. However, to say: "I use this" and then fail to provide accurate and well vetted protocols, is not helping the hobby. It's blatantly irresponsible, as it leaves the entire audience wanting to play mad scientists. Instead of actually following scientist's who test dosages and treatments at nauseum before ever making a recommendation. So, down vote for that. Not helpful. But yes, beautiful tank. Actually, I take that back. He's using a whole tank treatment... This is flat out bad advice. period. I'm happy he talked openly about his methods, but they are not sound in terms of treatment protocols. That's just throwing fads at the wall hoping something sticks, unaware of the background principles for treatment.

I'm directly criticizing the fact he's used one of the few effective antibiotic treatments usable in an aquarium, on a full system, prophylactically, without a target population to measure, nor even bothering to identify a target species. I get it, treating for a known pathogen to save a coral is great! But that's not what happening here. He's just dumping it in, hoping it's killing something pathogenic, and not bothering to measure the outcome. Which means everything in the tank is exposed, at a concentration which does not effectively kill off the pathogen population, or any other microorganism population. Meaning, he's actively selecting for a resistant strains in the future. In other words, what was described is "playing with fire". And you won't get burned until you have a pest immune to that OA, which then wipes out a coral, and you have no effective treatment left. It's one of the main reasons treatment protocols exist in the first place. As a rule, full tank treatments are a last resort. No qualified Vet, Extension agent, or researcher would give the advice he did, for good reason. It's much like advocating for the redfield ratio in a coral tank, when even Alfred Redfield later disproved his own findings as applicable to anything other than single celled organisms. That ratio only works because of what we now know as gene expression, where the algal organisms expresses it's genes to reflect it's environment. Not vice-versa... But, targeting the redfield ratio is harmless. Go for it. Advocating for an antibiotic treatment which laughs at any notion of resistance mitigation, is foolish.

I can see your point. 100:1 ratio has been working for me good so far. I don't like to get into science. As long as my corals are happy, I am as well!

@@Moodster93 I am keeping my nitrate to phosphate ratio 100 to 1 (10 no3 - 0.1 po4). That's what Ryan mentioned.

@@philwu271 I don't think pH has anything to do with macro alge dying. How old is the tank? Po4 & NO3? Which lights are u using for your macro?

Ryan has tried both ways. He tried it for 3 days as a whole tank treatment and as a couple hours dip as well.
