Testing a Diesel Heater in Brutal Single-Digit Temperatures - Will It Work?

- With temperatures dropping into the single digits, I decided to put my new diesel heater to the ultimate test by using it to heat my 4-man tent. Watch as I take on the freezing night and see if this heater can keep me warm until morning!

Nice video. You probably got cold from the cold ground radiating up through your mattress. Depends on the R rating of the mattress you were sleeping on. The ground will zap your body heat if you don’t have a good insulator between your body and the floor of the tent. Enjoy your heater. I’m certain it was out of fuel. The pick up line for the tank doesn’t usually go all the way down to the very bottom 👍. May need to turn it down a bit of you want a full night and also a smaller tent would help. Take care ☺️
Thanks! The mattress was insulated. I believe it was a 9. Definitely didn’t feel any of the ground cold.
@@tim_sessionsRunning in gear mode is more efficient than temp mode for me. It's easier to feel the air flow than to guess what temp it is set for and won't ramp up and down.
Good job, thank you from South Bend Indiana.
Thanks!
If you want to be able to utilize the auto on off thermostat setting, take your thermostat off the heater, extend the wires so you can bring the thermostat inside the tent. That way it’ll work like the unit inside your home
I was looking for a way to detach it. I’ll look harder. Great idea!
@ it will come off with some persuasion haha
A battery powered tent fan works works great for blowing the heat down from the top of the tent
Thanks, I'll have to try that out!
Thanks Tim. I subscribed. I thought you were going to check the fuel level, and In Carl's voice say. There ain't no gas in it.
I had checked it earlier in the week. I definitely ran out. Thanks for subbing!
I wrap the exhaust with exhaust heat/insulation wrap. It's fiberglass and it will keep anything touching it from getting too hot or melting, and it will keep condensation out of the pipe. You can touch it with your hand and it won't be too hot. I keep a white plastic zip-tie zipped around the exhaust wrap to see if it ever gets hot, and it hasn't melted it, and I use the stainless steel ties that come with the wrap at each end to secure it. I have an AC to DC converter (didn't come with a power supply) and a battery hooked up for backup if I lose power. It'll keep the tent warm, if you don't run out of fuel 🙂 on probably a medium to medium low setting.
That sounds like a great idea for keeping the condensation down and protecting the exhaust.
@@tim_sessions It gives you the flexibility to run the exhaust anywhere; under the garage door, out the window, out the tent... without burning anything. And, you can add longer exhaust piping without any concerns.
Love my sunster diesel heater that baby is super quiet and keeps me warm for 8 hours
I'll have to look into it!
@tim_sessions it was 187.00 on Amazon looks like a toolbox and has terrible reviews but ,it works excellent,I made a review of it too on my channel. How long have you been hot 🔥 tenting?
If it runs out of fuel it should shut down automatically. If the power goes out while it's running, it will destroy the heater. If I'm using power from the grid, I run it through a solar generator, can also use a battery with charger on it. That way, if the grid power goes out, the heater will still run on the solar gen or battery. Safely keep it from burning up the heater. Most of the tanks have the outlet hose about half inch from the bottom. So it will not completely run the tank dry. The exhaust should be pointed down a little. The heater will cause condensation in the exhaust pipe. Just a couple things I've learned.
Thanks for the tips! I'm still learning the ropes of this.
@@tim_sessions I'm pretty new to the diesel heaters myself, but I did a lot of research before buying one. So far, I think they are good heaters, as long as you know how to set them up for operation, and how to avoid most of the common problems. Also, have you thought about what tariffs may do to the price of parts for yours? I bought a couple extra igniters, gasket kits, and screens for mine. Just in case they become hard to get or expensive. If you clean the inside of the heater, you will probably need the gaskets, the screens can get clogged and need changing, and igniters will wear out. I also got a extra fuel pump for mine. May never need it, but I think it's better to have it if I do, instead of needing it when I don't have it.
Ahhhh yes. The internet warriors.
I have an off brand (actually two diesel heaters, one in the chicken coop too) heaters in my garage. Run it every day. I've run about 100 gallon through through the one in the garage. The exhaust pipe goes UP to a panel I made for a window for the exhaust...no issues with "condensation"...ever. and I have it running off a converter from ac to dc. Heater runs about 60% when I'm running it. One day I actually forgot I had it on....cut power to the house to do some electrical work and infact....I did not "destroy" it.
I would not advise turning power off to it while running at 100%....but if at 50%....and not done repeatedly....it will not destroy the heater. It is advised to run it off batter being charged by the grid....better for safety sure. But destroy it? Nope. Still runs fine.
Again. I have two and have for years.
@@wadebrewer7212 I've seen them melted. Don't know what power it was at, but it melted the case around the burner. I never tried it and don't think I will if I can avoid it. I have used on grid power a couple times just show it off to friends. Otherwise it's hooked to a 1000W solar gen. The solar gen will run it for more than one night, and is pass threw so it could be hooked to the grid or solar panel and still power the heater.
it would work much more efficiently if the cold air intake was taking it's air from the conditioned tent air.....(not the combustion fresh air intake) also I would never run one even in a tent without a CO detector.
For sure. Good thing I had one on hand.
@@tim_sessionsYou need to place your CO detector at a higher location than your body. CO is lighter than oxygen. If your meter detects CO levels it would occur at the high point. Your CO meter instructions should say within 12 inches from ceiling. Enjoy your new heater. I run three in my home.
So was it fuel?
I think so. It was too cold to go fill it up and see.
@@tim_sessionshave you troubleshot the problem?
Can you hear the clicking of the pump?
Yep, you can, but it’s not bad.
There is aftermarket quiet pumps

Diesel does not give off carbon monoxide
It does, but not as much as gasoline.
