  • Visit www.ThreeSidesO... / threesidesofthecoin / threesidescoin and CALL US at 320-515-4771 and join the conversation. Three Sides of the Coin is a KISS talk show featuring Michael Brandvold, Mitch Lafon and Tommy Sommers.
In the 50th episode we celebrate with special guest, Eddie Trunk. For over two and a half hours, the four delved into Trunk's start in the music business at Megaforce Records, the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame, his love and support of influential guitar hero Ace Frehley, his thoughts about the current KISS line-up, his sometimes shaky relationship with KISS frontman Paul Stanley and much more.
"There will be, very soon, a version of KISS with no original members," muses Trunk about the band's near future. "Nobody went to a KISS show in the '70s and said 'I hope I catch a guitar pick from Spaceman tonight'. It was 'I can't wait for Ace's guitar to smoke,' stated Trunk about the band's current branding. 'It didn't say bass by the Demon on KISS - Alive! It said Gene Simmons. They were the people," added Trunk emphatically. When speaking of his personal relationship with affable KISS icon, Paul Stanley, Trunk declared, 'Paul has always been hot and cold with me." As for Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, Trunks says, "they are great musicians. I have no problem with Tommy and Eric. I don't begrudge them at all for doing this." Voicing his opinion on the different line-up changes, Trunk throws out, "I'll never forget hearing Animalize for the first time, I was like 'Oh, my God - KISS has a shredder in the band (Mark St. John)' and it was exciting because it was different. That, to me, made line-up changes exciting," and adds, "one of the beautiful things about being a KISS fan, I think, is that throughout their whole history every record was a different turn. Unmasked was a power-pop record, The Elder was a concept record, Creatures (Of The Night) was an all out metal record; whether or not you like these records is irrelevant. They took these different turns. You had all these different variations." As for KISS' being included on the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame's ballot this year, Trunk says clearly that, 'as KISS fans we have fought the perception for years that KISS is nothing, but a manufactured joke that can't play their instruments or write songs. What's offensive to me is that we're here over ten years after they first became eligible and still trying to figure out if they should get in. They should have gone in the first time they were eligible."
Eddie Trunk hosts, Trunk Nation, on SiriusXm's Hair Nation (ch. 39), That Metal Show (with Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson) on VH1 Classic as well as Eddie Trunk Rocks (a nationally syndicated radio show). He's also authored, 'Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal - Volumes 1 & 2'.
Since launching a year ago Three Sides of the Coin has been viewed or listened to over 200,000 times. In the last year, Three Sides of the Coin has been joined by special guests including former KISS lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, the Black Veil Brides' Andy Biersack, Frank Munoz associate producer for Ace Frehley's Anomaly album, award winning songwriter Adam Mitchell, Ed Kanon (Peter Criss' drum tech), and Kevin Valentine (drummer on KISS' Psycho Circus album). Three Sides of the Coin was recently picked (October 2013) as a 'What's Hot' podcast by Apple's iTunes.
In the early '90s, Michael Brandvold launched the fifth ever website on the Internet devoted to KISS, KISS Otaku. He was the first to build, launch and maintain Kissonline.com (KISS' official web presence). Mitch Lafon, a renowned rock journalist, first interviewed Gene Simmons in June 1980 at age 11 and has since interviewed nearly all current and past members of KISS (many more than once). In 2013, he organized, produced and released the 'A WORLD WITH HEROES' - KISS TRIBUTE for cancer care (available worldwide on iTunes). Tommy Sommers has spent many years on the record show circuit selling memorabilia and meeting many KISS fans.
It's only our opinion... it's neither right nor wrong.

Just went back and listened all the way through this for the 2nd time. By far, the best interview I've ever heard with Eddie. The 3 Sides guys knocked a homerun here. I've talked to Eddie before and to hear this, in the context it was presented, without everyone shouting at him, unfiltered, was an exceptional experience! Thanks guys for the efforts on this one. Very educating!

Thank you Eddie Trunk for explaining it in a way i never could. The view of a original Kiss fan. Being 16 in 76 we never saw characters. We saw Gene,Paul,Peter and Ace.

I have nothing to say except that the show this week was the best you guys have done, I would love for Eddie to come back on a future episode and talk more about his time working with Ace in the 80s. Was great to see Mrs Mitch and the kids, they seem lovely. Thanks to Mike, Tommy and Mitch, and to Eddie for such a great show this week.

Great interview men. As an Eddie Trunk fan/follower, I found this to be the most raw/revealing discussion I have heard re: all things KISS. Appreciate the passion, insights, and knowledge. So much so that I stayed up half the night to hear it.
Can't help but wonder if one of the nuggets Ed has that "will blow your heads off" is the reputed firing of Eric Carr on his death bed. I recall Ed stated in "The Eric Carr Story" that he highly doubts Gary Corbett's claim(s) of such, yet still.

I was eight years old in 1983 when I discovered the band. Really liked to hear Mr. Trunk talking about my first Kiss blessing Lick It Up & Vinnies powers! He really spoke my mind about Kiss as a band past the farewell tour aswell. This was so entertaining.
    Keep up the good work!

I thought that was one of the best interviews you have done so far and a lot of people should listen to Eddie I think he shoots from the hip and didn't hold much back. Its great to hear what other people think rather than reading a post or on here say. And I am in Australia and don't get any rock shows or much news here so its great listening to you guys keep up the great work. Long time listener first time post. rock on.

This was such an amazing discussion. It really unfolded where Eddie stands on all of these KISS issues. It was totally worth the almost 3-hour discussion. Thanks to Michael, Mitch and Tommy for really picking Eddie's brain with thoughts and questions that really brought so much of what he had to say to light.
One thing for sure: I'm not really sure who knows what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does in terms of who gets in but if Metallica's two replacement bassists get induced then I think every recording member of KISS should also be inducted. I emailed the Hall with that idea and I hope the rest of you do the same.

In fairness to Gene and Paul, who are workaholics, which doesn't work well for creative people (quantity over quality), they can't stop. IMO, KISS was somewhat doomed from the start. 1974-1978.

Best episode yet! I do agree with the caged in personas of Tommy and Eric. They should of had different characters for them but Gene and Paul fear no one would show up to the shows. I do disagree with the backing tracks point as one of my favorite bands "Rush" has been using them for years but knowing the amazing musicians they are you seem as a fan to overlook it. Keep it up guys, love the show!!!

Eddie tries to represent himself here as being unbiased when it comes to Paul and Gene, as if he'd criticize Ace and Peter just as quickly, but I don't buy it. I think he's very much in the Ace and Peter camp. My impression is he would hesitate criticizing Ace and Peter much more than Gene and Paul.

What an awesome interview. And to start it off with the "Very Special Guest" at the beginning makes this my favorite episode so far! Congrats to you guys on making it to your 50th Episode and can't wait for what's to come. Homework: The most surprising thing that I learned from this interview was about how controlling Paul really is in the band. It kind of diminishes Gene's character in my eyes now. He's the one always hyping crap and to learn that it's possibly Paul pulling the strings is an eye opener. It doesn't mean that it's something negative, it was just an eye opener for me. Great interview again!

They know you are great friends with Ace and Peter and both appeared on your show FIRST, in which Gene and Paul will never play 2nd fiddle and see you as a backstabber for doing so,so they will NEVER give you the time and day for anything!

This may be one of the best interviews I've listened to...period. Eddie's insights are very articulate and interesting. Good questions, and I am with Eddie about the current KISS. And I don't think Vinnie Vincent saved KISS. He contributed a lot, but Animalize had some killer material and was commercially more successful than CON or LIU. He was important, but certainly no savior. What saved KISS was that they stopped making disco and orchestra-laden albums and went back to 3-chord, kick ass rock, period.

What I do is I understand. I understand that the original members themselves are the biggest influence on my musical interests. To this day I still listen to the early stuff the mostish. On the flip side, I totally understand the will of Paul and Gene to continue the legacy that only they can.I am glad KISS still rocks to this day! That wouldn't have happened with the original lineup. Paul and Gene Rule. That's where the story ends.Yep, thats me.Peter Criss and Ace Frehley are the reason I learned to pickup their instruments.Paul and Gene are the reason my sons got to follow in my footsteps. The Wife and I Took my oldest son to see KISS in Toledo in August , 2016.He now plays both drums and guitar just about better than his father.Thank you Paul and Gene for continuing on and allowing for that to happen.

I hope this can now somewhat clear the air for KISS fans. Keep it up guys!

Fantastic episode & best guest yet! Eddie seems like a nice guy. I really like how he expresses his opinion on the current state of KISS & doesn't backpedal on any of his past comments. Good on him for sticking to his guns. Hearing about his encounters with Paul was too cool for words. It was like a peek behind the curtain. I'm starting to believe all the stuff in Peter's book about Paul having prescription drug issues. Paul sounds nuts. The part about Gene being Paul's puppet was too much. I bet Captain Paul runs the good ship KISS with a stern hand.

  • @sulive1
    @sulive1 11 лет назад +3

Eddie looks at this from an artistic perspective whereas, Paul and Gene have always been all about business. I believe that Paul and Gene are building a franchise that will continue on long after they are no longer able to tour and perform, while still maintaining control. Eddie mentions this. It will be like Cirque de Soleil. Revolving performers managed by the "head office". I'm not saying thats bad or good, I just think thats whats going on here and Eddie doesnt like it.

I'm just curious now as to how you're gonna follow, or top, this one. I have no doubt you'll do it though. Kudos. Thanks for the shows and happy 50th Anniversary.

wow a LOT of ground covered. I first became aware of Eddy hosting the VH1 classic rock show things he did...maybe 2-3 years before that Metal show...you could really see his love of music especially hard rock. You guys should have tried to stump him on 1 KISS question each...would have been interesting to see what you all would have come up with. EDDY if you read this. Thank you for keeping Metal alive on VH1/. Your show like 3 sides I look forward to every week...and I can't imagine my week without it! If it ever gets dropped you HAVE to keep it alive somewhere else!!! great show guys...will for sure listen to this again. OH and Winery Dogs do rule. I bought the Japanese import of the CD and love it!!

Well done to all three of you on 50 episdoes and for bringing on such a great guest. The stories and insights from Eddie were great, I knew it was going to be great when I clicked and saw the length at 2 hrs 41 mins. One thing that stuck out for me was that perhaps Peter's view of Paul in his book is accurate in the sense that what Paul wants Paul gets. He comes off as being above criticism and a little pompous and arrogant.

I see some comments below saying how this is "just another Eddie rant about Ace & Peter", which clearly indicates the person did not listen to the interview. Second, another person points out that in other inductions, non-original members were included; While this is true, the fact remains that the Rock Hall determines the bandmembers to be included, not the artist or their reps--nor their fans.

I have to agree with Eddie that if KISS does get inducted in the Rock Hall and Gene and Paul do not let Peter and Ace perform as a band on the rock hall induction ceremony concert they are true A-holes. The four of them is the reason why KISS is KISS and who made this band the awesomeness they are. They deserve to be part of the ceremony and the show. It's would only be a few songs and then a bow to the KISS Army! Just like the song on Psycho Circus, we wanted the best we deserve the best!!!! This was a great interview with Eddie and I'm not a really big Eddie fan, but I like hearing what he has to say as a fan. Thanks!

love to see it but I think its clear gene and paul cant stand working with ace and peter and its become more clear every year that ace and peter arnt the victems in all of this that we fans sometimes like to make them out to be

Great show guys.. Would agree with most of what everybody said.. Would like to see Eric (Carr) & Bruce inducted as well into the RARHF.. They worked their asses off & kept the Kiss machine running for over decade... Would have to Agree with Eddie on one point, the Hot in the Shade tour was awesome..

seen Kiss 12 times hot in the shade might be my favourite tour just based on the number of tunes they played, and Eric Carrs drumming sounded like thunder in an arena

l really enjoyed this episode with Eddie....im a huge fan of the original four....but dont really have any issue.s with the current lineup....i dont want to see a reunion...i think that has past....we have already been there and it was fantastic......i,d just like to see the mud slinging stop.....the Paul/Gene vs Ace/Peter... we all know about the drugs booze women .....people should just sit back put your headphones on turn it up loud and just listen to in my opinion some really great rockinroll.....i dont care about the RRHOF....but if they make it.....Paul Gene Ace & Peter need to be on stage together because they deserve it and so do we !!!.....

Wow, my opinion on Eddie has completely changed. Like Mitch, I only heard of him bashing the current KISS lineup. 2 hours? WOW!!! I jus want to apologize to Eddie for having such a closed mind about him. I see a lot of myself in him. I respect everyone's opinion on KISS. Mine is unique, I like the Vinnie era, the original lineup, Eric Carr and Ace lineup, etc. BEST EPISODE YET!!!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wouldn't induct KISS for the longest time but, when I was there, they were selling KISS merchandise. Grow up, HOF!
