Ahsoka: Positive Character Arc - Raised to believe in war while keeping the peace, experience exposes the flaws in her educated reasoning and she takes those lessons to heart.

The observation that Maul is a Sisyphean character is an apt one. I found the Maul arcs some of the most brilliant writing in the whole series if not Star Wars itself. Like the original trilogy, it draws on themes of classical literature and myth.
In many ways, Maul is made to resemble Caliban. But the more obvious comparison here is the place of Lucifer in Paradise Lost. Maul was the servant of the most powerful being in the universe, as he himself puts it, before he is cruelly cast aside and left to eternal darkness and torment. His brother, like Orpheus, descends into the underworld in order to, through many trials, resurrect Maul. Along the way, Savage is tricked by a serpent. Because why not.
Maul was perfect for the Sith because of his extreme rage and his ability to endure unimaginable agony in the pursuit of his goals. And though as a Sith lord his rage brings him power, he is as consumed by his rage and thirst for vengeance as the Jedi masters warn. In the end they corrupt and destroy every other goal he sets, and eat away at him until they are the only things he has left.

Where as you about Maul never learns, I feel like he did move on. After he meets with Death Watch, the dark knight rises so to speak. He became more than his vengeance, becoming the most powerful party outside Sidious’ control. His plan to take control of Mandalore was nothing less than flawless. He effortlessly takes over the Black Sun, The Pikes, even the Hutts stand no chance. After the rise of the Empire he maintains most of that power. Maul and Visla unite because of their mutual enemy in Kenobi, but I think he only thought of using Satine for his revenge after she contacts Obi-Wan specifically. Then he got to cause him so much pain in killing her. That was his vengeance. Killing him was never his plan, more like a treat for another time. Other than that, he becomes what every Sith Lord desires: in possession of great power in Mandalore, Master to an apprentice with the potential to be better than him in Savage, and posing as an immense problem to the Jedi.
His fall comes from Palpatine. Every time. In Rebels, Maul is broken. He poses no real threat to The Emperor. He relapsed to his old desire of destroying Kenobi, but I don’t see that as vengeance, but to prove he’s still worth something. Then he sees him still standing proudly as a Jedi and that breaks him. His only thought was about destroying whatever Kenobi still held dear and then finishing him for good. And as that threatens Luke Skywalker, he has to be stopped.

I thought of this while watching this about Anakin, that as he had less things to loose he clung on tighter to them, to him the path to the darkside didn't come from having attachements, but from having too few, the more he had the more balanced he was, because the more you have the less afraid you are to loose any one of them, Anakin was scared of loosing the people he cared about because it would mean he would be left alone.
Loosing Ahsoka to him was not just a blow to his trust in the order but something that caused him massive amounts of pain, just like when he thought that Obi-Wan had died he felt powerless to protect those he cared about, unable to do right for those he cared about, he couldn't keep the Jedi from expelling Ahsoka, he was the one who had less of a reason to apologize to Ahsoka but he was the only one who did, because he felt it was his failure to protect his friend and apprenctice, he felt he didn't do enough to prove her innocence.
And when the only bonds he had left were Padme, and Obi-Wan he clung to them ferociously, because he had already lost so much in that war, so many people under his command had died, so many of his fellow Jedi lost, he didn't have anyone to confide in, to console him when the pain of loss came to him, we are afraid to loose those we care about because of the pain it brings, but it doesn't need to be so bad if you have others who care about you near you, but Anakin didn't have such a thing, he would be forced to endure on his own by the Jedi, and the only person he could 100% trust, his own padawan left before his most difficult time.

Like FFS cad bane is 81 years old in bobf and his species should not get older than around 60 yrs old. They spend to much time just trying to make fan service for the lowest common denominator, the casual star wars fans. This leads stories and writing to completely fall apart like in the bobf. But it's not all their fault. They're still under KK who clearly wants them to tailor their stuff to fit the sequel garbage movies. Then there is another influence and that's Disney who so badly wants star wars to just be marvel. I bet you Disney would love to replace KK with the idiots in charge of modern marvel.
It's clear that George isn't involved and the old actors are leaving star wars. Mark didn't even voice Luke even though he was CGI. I don't think mark would've ever read dialogue as bad as Luke's was in the bobf. And George was clearly involved in the Mandalorian advising Dave and Jon and in bobf he clearly wasn't. Good writing sells books on the other hand and the old canon books sold really well for star wars books. This is why most movies adapt books. 17:00-The Umbara Arc was my favorite arc of the series. I can still remember the unbridled rage I felt when I learned of Krell’s treachery. When they went to arrest him and he said “You dare to attack a Jedi?!?” I always say “You're no Jedi!” It was the episode that left all of the childishness behind

  • @slushg3326

Just finished watching part 2 and I just want to thank you for presenting the thematic richness contained within the show itself it is something that I’ve felt like other video essayists have not really covered in depth in comparison with the movies.
I also wholeheartedly believe that TCW is a great showcase of how to create stakes and intrigue within a narrative that we know the conclusion too. And in my opinion, it does this by using it’s political episodes and the slow but gradual change shown within Palpatine’s (political stance not ideological) stance toward the Jedi in the eyes of the people.
In the earlier seasons of the show the political goal of Palpatine is to frame the Jedi as protectors and defenders of the Republic they are an arm of the political machine protecting it’s ideals, listen to the speech Palpatine gives through the holonet in season 2 episode 11 “Lightsaber Lost” and compare it to say Season 5:s “The Wrong Jedi”, Palpatine has by creating this image of the Jedi as defenders in the eyes of the people also created a base that he can easily take apart he gives the Jedi what they want while giving them less control, all of their failures also turn into disdain in the eyes of the people. as Leta put it, the Jedi changed in the eyes of the people because of Palpatine seemingly putting them on such a pedestal early on. It truly was a master plan, the Jedi had lost their control which is why Palpatine was welcomed with open arms (just as you pointed out in the video).
I know a lot of people who still write this show off because of it’s medium which I feel is a shame since it does in my eyes truly embody what Lucas was all about telling thematically rich overarching narratives in new ways. Hopefully the “Bad Batch” series can continue this tradition next year. Writing something off because of it’s medium or genre is in itself limiting, I enjoyed TCW because of it’s variety in it’s stories and the different genres and movies it took inspiration from and I truly believe that by the end LF Animation really perfected their vision which why I’m so excited for bad batch since it will continue to evolve the visual storytelling presented within this show.
Who knows, one day my comparison of Lucasfilm Animation as the Pixar of 3D animated television won’t be that far fetched anymore especially if the quality presented within the final season of TCW is anything to go by.

    • @ArTorrPresents
      @ArTorrPresents  3 года назад +18

I am super stoked for The Bad Batch! I know one of their goals is to "preserve" the style of storytelling Lucas wanted for The Clone Wars, the adventure serial storytelling I suppose. There's alot of opportunities to do more w/ the identity of the clones, explore the political upheavel in the former Republic and governments around the galaxy, and delve into the rise of fascism, etc. It's was such an interesting choice of characters to follow so I think we're going to see alot of interesting ideas play out.

I love the way you describe how characters like asajj and savage are victims of trauma and through that, coerced into the dark side but how they also perpetuate the cycle of violence and trauma through that. because that is also what anakin goes through. anakin is also manipulated and used by palpatine to become ’the perfect sith’. i think that a very important part of anakin’s character is the fact that he grew up as a slave. he was born into bondage. and even though in star wars it isn’t ~ that ~ explored, you can still understand anakin through that. anakin has had, since a kid, a sense of being his own person. he has his own wants and needs, but was still chained to being a slave. then the jedi save him because he is special. for a person who has grown up being someone’s property, that must feel like heaven on earth. but he becomes attached to the jedi order. i truly think that the trauma of being a slave contributed a lot to how anakin just can’t walk away from the order, even though he wants to. he has never known anything else but servitude to a cause. he wants to be free, and his quest for power and want to control and keep his loved ones alive and with him can be tied to the need of breaking the cycle of servitude. he wants the power because that means that he can finally be the master. (yes i know lmao literally also a jedi master). he wants to keep his loved ones close and alive because ultimately as a slave he couldn’t, he was not allowed that and he is afraid of being abandoned and alone. these all manifest in the end in negative ways as anakin feels betrayed by all of the people around him but can’t come to terms with all the loss around.
i just... man. even though anakin is this super powerful space wizard, i think he’s true happy ending would’ve been a quiet life with padme and their children away from all the violence and trauma. learning truly to be his own master and have his own sense of identity. padme obviously could and would be a sort of political figure and doing great work but i feel like anakin, in the end, would’ve been happy living just with his family as a mechanic or smthg. oh, and far away from sand.

That Filoni quote at the end. Though i am 23, i feel like he was talking about me.
You're not gonna kill her are you?
I remember watching the cw movie and dreading when Ahsoka was on screen. I despised her nicknaming everyone, skyguy, rex'o'boy etc. But she slowly grew to becoming my favorite character. Not in clone wars, but all of star wars. Maybe my favorite fictional character. I was a teen when she was introduced and she has reached adulthood at about the same time as me. Watching her grow and mature has showed me a part of who i want to be. And seeing her friendship with rex, my other favorite character, was incredible.
Seeing them flee the Venator, my favorite sw capital ship, in a y-wing, my favorite starfighter. Blew me away. I will always remember it as the greatest and most tragic endings to a show. Ever. Thank you for this great video series. And thank you, Dave Filoni.

Clone Wars is such a masterpiece. It filled my childhood with joy, and influences me on personal levels today. You say that the political episodes are some of the fans' least favorite episodes, but I'm different when it comes to that. The episodes involving the politics on Mandalore were always amazing to me. And 'Heroes on Both Sides' is one of my favorite episodes in the series simply because of the message of it.
Also, I know a ton of people hated Ahsoka Tano at first, but I loved her from the start and always knew she'd someday become someone special. And she has, even on an extremely personal level for me. I grew up alongside her. I was a bratty little kid, just like her. And by the end of Clone Wars, we had both become survivors of our own individual battles (She was a Jedi padawan who had survived a war, and I'm chronically ill and fighting every day against my own failing body). She's my role model and always inspires me to be brave and keep going, no matter how hard things get.

Asajj Ventress reminds me of a character from Berserk named Farnese. They're both characters who at first seem like the perfect heel; made only for the audience to root against and dislike... but instead the audience eventually grows to sympathize with them, getting to know their backstory and finally root for them when they begin to learn and grow as a character. They aren't moralized as purely good or evil, they're presented to the audience as a fully fleshed out character with real, relatable motivations that we can sympathize with.
This is yet another reason why Star Wars is so great as a total franchise. As I said before on the comment to another one of your videos (I'm really enjoying them by the way) if you were to look at Star Wars as centered on the story of Anakin Skywalker as seen through the lenses of every character around him, then it becomes clear that as a whole, Star Wars is very much one of the greatest tragedies ever told, which makes it a masterpiece for the ages. The entire supporting cast of characters from beginning to end adds depth, meaning, and weight to his story... provides allegory, premonition, contrast... they are all reflections of Anakin's journey. Even Vader himself is a ultimately a character separate from Anakin, and he is the ultimate reflection of his character.
All by itself, THAT fact makes the Anakin/Vader dichotomy a master class in Jungian psychology... bringing balance to the force was ultimately an exercise in confronting, and incorporating the inner shadow into his conscious mind, and learning to be at peace with it.
What George Lucas did between the trilogies, and the TV series is nothing short of genius, even with the mistakes accounted for.

During the Clone Wars his emotional attachment and care for others also made him an exceptionally humane military leader which is why the clones were always happiest to serve under him, because he wouldn't ask the clones to do anything in battle he wasn't also willing to do himself. Having been raised as a slave himself he saw the clones as fellow human beings worthy of dignity, not just as tools to be used.

The end of season 5 broke me. I remember being is sobs and screaming in front of my tv.
Ahsoka is probably my absolute favorite Star Wars character and that finale didn't make me think "omg, they did my favorite charcter dirty". I was devastated, because I felt for her, for Anakin. For years of following the growth of this little Jedi alongside my own growth as a person. From being an absolute idiot who knew nothing about Star Wars and saw Ahsoka in the TCW trailer and thought immediately "Oh my, she's so pretty, she must be a princess" (probably my first girl crush honestly XD) to Star Wars becoming a central point of my life, inspiring me to start roleplaying, ispiring my decor, my haloween costumes. My 18th birthday was Ahsoka-themed. I had a full 3D Ahsoka cake and my mom went all the way to another city to find me the latest Ahsoka figure. Which I had no ides at first when she revealed to me my first gift, a lil ferret I immediately called Ahsoka (cuz of the stripes, y'know).
I doodled Ahsoka on my school work, painted her on my main binder and my pencil case, printed screenshots of the show to decorate my bedroom.....
I think I wouldn't be who I am now without that little Togruta and her immense personality. From cringe teen like myself to a person broken by the people she trusted the most.

    @Obi-Wan_Kenobi 3 года назад +27

This is an excellent video overall, but I think there are some issues with your case against the Jedi in the final part. It's ironic, in your case to present the Jedi as more morally gray, you paint the Jedi are far more black than they truly are. (And I'm sorry, this is going to be a really long comment to examine the nuance the show explores.)
For one thing, the Jedi are not emotionless as many often paint them. They do fear emotion and are abundantly aware of emotion, but they do not let it rule their choices. We see time and time again that senior Jedi are feel emotion and are not ashamed of them, but they do not let it dominate their choices.
I also think you conflate the Jedi and the Republic too much. In any ways, the Jedi oppose the more authoritainrain measures of the Republic. In fact, the Jedi's worst moments came when they lose their autonomy and are pressured by the military-political establishment the Republic was becoming. While the Republic is often presented as Orwellian, Clone Wars is careful not to present the Jedi as such. The only exception to this is Anakin Skywalker, who is repeatedly portrayed as favoring authoritarian measures to foreshadow his fall to the Dark Side.
Im fact, the Republic and Jedi are so distinct that Order 66 is necessary for Palpatine to rule. He knows the Jedi will never allow an Empire and it is shown throughout the show that the Jedi are reigning in the Republic from going too far. The Jedi became the only morality left in the Republic so to truly fall, the Republic had to exterminate the Jedi.
And on the last point Ahsoka's arc, I believe you took some of your conclusions a bit too far and part of this was based in some of your claims being false. The entire public did not suddenly turn on the Jedi because of the bombing, it was a gradual turn. And even then, it was not the entire public. And in many ways, this this public outrage is not entirely justified. Instead of blaming the Republic military establishment or Clones, the public uses the Jedi as their scapegoat even though the Jedi are using the most humanitarian methods on the battlefield.
Likewise, it's an unfair conclusion to say the Jedi perpetuated the war. The Jedi were not aggressors in this conflict and we see that they were pulled into the war to (1) bring it to a speedy end (2) make sure the Republic forces do not cross moral lines in their pursuit of victory and (3) to defeat the Sith who rule the separatists. The only good choice was for the Jedi to frankly join, as not doing so would have allowed Count Dooku to rule half the galaxy not to mention the fact that he was the aggressor.
Barris's speech-wise personifies how much misguided the public is. You are supposed to take everything she says with a grain of salt, this is after all the person who just bombed a temple and framed her friend in an attempt to prove her point about the Jedi being violent. Barris is clearly a crazy extremest at this point who is attempting to call out violence with more violence. She's a hypocrite. But through her, you can see how the public is misguided and misinformed about the Jedi.
Do the Jedi make mistakes? Yes. Do some Jedi go too far? Yes (like Anakin). But Barris's conclusions are still so extreme and misguided because she is an extremist. The Jedi are not to blame for this war and by fighting they are not perpetuating it. Sometimes the only moral choice is to fight back and Barris failed to see that in her contradictory black and white world.
And this extends to your point about Ahsoka's expulsion. First off, you stated in the video that only Anakin apologized. That's not true, Plo Koon emphatically apologized on behalf of the whole council and I'd wager we would have seen more but this is a 22 minute episode, there is one so much you can show on-screen and the rest you need to imply happened off-screen. And it's clear the Jedi felt very guilty about his as evidenced by scenes that happened in season 6.
And again, this entire problem only occurred because the Jedi bent to the Chancellor. If they did remained more politically independent, they would have given her a longer and more fear trial. Not to mention how many of the Jedi heavily opposed expelling Ahsoka. And let's not sidestep how there was a strong body of evidence against Ahsoka. We the viewers know she is being framed, but in the show the Jedi are only fed inaccurate information to make them believe she is guilty. The Jedi cannot be painted as an exaggerated monolith when we see that they are in fact individuals with conflicting opinions.
And again, I thought this was an excellent video and agree with so many of your points. I just felt that your conclusions regarding the Jedi were taken too far and ignore how distinct the Jedi Order is from the larger Republic. The Jedi were just as blindsided by Palpatine and the Republic as Ahsoka was here. It's less a statement of the Jedi bringing about their own fall and more a statement of the Republic subtly shifting values under the influences of evil. And nowhere is this better exemplified in Anakin who went from being a good man to an evil one where the instant he became a villain was when he betrayed the Jedi to kill them, further cementing the distinction between his evil and the Jedi's good.

      Just wanted to say that,
      1) this is a really great analytic comment that deserves more attention and
      2) I always seem to see you around in comment sections here and there (like even on stuff that's not Star Wars related) and just wanted to say that you're cool.
That's really it, keep up the great work, Obi-Wan.

Another excellent video! You do a wonderful job of communicating just how great the storytelling of this show was. It blows my mind when people who claim to have watched the whole series say that it was "Ok" with "Some interesting parts." Anyone who doesn't fully appreciate what the show accomplished should really watch your series.

I remember being so excited as a man in his twenties every time a new season came out. The season seven wrap up was a good end and tie in to revenge. Just wish the season had 22 episodes lol

Pretty good overall, clearly a lot of work been put into this! Few minor errors like the claim that both Ventress & Maul were betrayed by their masters when Mail simply failed to complete his mission in Phantom Menace and was presumed dead

Maul was always meant to die, either then or later, as Palpatine wanted Anakin as an apprentice rather than anyone else.
