Imagine if in Jedi: Fallen Order, instead of getting to choose the colour of your Kyber crystal, it's based on your playstyle e.g. Green if you use force abilities more often, Blue if you use your lightsaber most etc.

The "failure is not the end" scene was absolutely amazing. It gives me goosebumps. I have played through the game a couple more times just to build up to that scene. When Cal repairs his lightsaber and ignites it, you get this overwhelming sense of fulfillment and it's clear that the game is telling you, "He's a Jedi Knight now". This game was so well done it actually shocked me.

Jedi Fallen Order is probably my favorite Star Wars story. Diverse cast, deep characters, awesome villain, and incredible gameplay. Not that it necessarily needs to, but it also follows George Lucas' "formula" for a good Star Wars story: mentor figure, comedic relief, redemption and adds to it. Cal Kestis, Cere Junda, Trilla Suduri, and Merrin are among some of my favorite Star Wars characters ever.

This game blows TFU out of the water, I’ve always thought that game prioritized flashy “badass” actions and that’s just not what the force is about for me. This game feels like it fits right in the canon and could be a movie or show. Plus, the souls-like genre is perfect for the atmosphere of the story. You’re not some great Jedi hero, you’re a kid with a lightsaber whose training was cut short by order 66. Also Trilla is a fantastic villain

This is an absolutely excellent deconstruction of the game. It certainly wasn't the gameplay that gripped me, but the growth of Cal's character and his dynamic with varied characters throughout the game. This is a quality analysis I don't see often on RUclips. Thank you.

I believe in this game, just as producers of The Last Of Us once said they intended, one never feels overpowered. As you say, every encounter is a struggle to survive. You never feel as a Jedi Master (though there is a difficulty setting for that) but still as a young and nieve apprentice.

Dude, this was absolutely incredible and insightful. I've delved into the story of Jedi: Fallen Order and its protagonist, Cal Kestis, for a while now and you've offered some new insight I've never considered before, such as the thesis of trust. I also really loved your analysis of the Hero's Journey to Cal and the analysis of the ludonarrative of the game. Two things I'll add is that Cal has a unique internal arc: He goes from being very self-confident to humbled by his experiences in his journey. Many Jedi, such as Luke and Ezra, go through the opposite, which is fine. But it's so interesting that the writers flipped it around for Cal, making him a unique Jedi in the process.
The other thing is about the ludonarrative and Cal's journey throughout Dathomir. Cal goes through A LOT on Dathomir with facing various creatures, undead Nightsisters/Nightbrothers, and Gorgara.
So, to me, an additional factor that could show why Cal failed is because of the challenges he faced in traversing back up to the Temple which exhausted him greatly in addition to the darkness imbued throughout Dathomir that fed into Cal and affected his ability with the Force to patiently meditate in order to reconnect.

I loved this story so much that I replayed SWJ:FO about 7 times on Grandmaster difficulty during the shutdowns. (It helped that the gameplay is fluid and fun.) I know the story in the game is official canon, but I REALLY want to see Cal Kestis in a future show. Edit: I LOVE that the game characters actually look like the actors.

I wish you had focused more on the way he bonded with Merin and her importance to his perspective. She is as much his foil as Trilla is, only Merin is his emotional foil while Trilla is more physical. The way he gains Merin's trust by offering her his saber is a as much a contrast to his learning about Trilla as the direct contrasts between him watching his two masters through the glass and forging the saber from theirs. Merin's perspective is also part of defining Cal's. She's the one who suggests that he would be the one putting the children at risk. And she is the one who ultimately offers him the path and saves him in the end. The parallels in the game, from his two masters, to the duels with Malicos and the Ninth Sister, the two birds, dual sabers, the deepest contrast and comparison is Trilla and Merin.

This game was one of the first PC games I ever bought when I built my first PC this year and got into PC gaming. I was so amazed by the story, action and gameplay. It felt so good to finally enjoy a Star Wars story with a hero's journey motif again (seeing a protagonist actually struggle, train, and overcome their short-comings to succeed) especially after disney butchered the execution of the sequels and EA screwed the Battlefront games. Respawn did an amazing job!

My favorite piece of background storytelling comes from Ilum. A world that is sacred amongst the Jedi. The place where younglings become Padawans. They are sent to find their first kyber crystal to create their own lightsaber. As such it was a smart move to have your first visit to the planet to have no imperial presence at first glace. Even the planet on the loading screen hide the twist that is coming on your first visit. There are no enemies, just a series of platforming challenges. That is mainly because you cannot use your lightsaber at this point but it also creates a sense of rest and peace (in a weird way). You have hope that the Empire has not found Ilum. That is until you leave the caves to come face to face with the Empire and the massive trench they have dug out in their quest to harvest the crystals within for their ultimate weapon. The trench also serves as foreshadowing for Starkiller Base seen in the force awakens. Stealing Kyber crystals was bad enough, but to turn Ilum into a literal superweapon is the ultimate blow to the Jedi and their order. As you escape the Empires compound, the Jedi Temple is destroyed by the Empire. Nowhere is safe from the Sith in these dark times. When you leave the planet (and on repeated visits for collectables you may have missed) the trench is front and center in the foreground of the planet. And this piece of visual storytelling aids in Cals decision to destroy the holocon. Nowhere is safe from the Empire. If Ilum, a world in the unknown regions, a world only known to the Jedi could be found by the Empire, then any world can. It is only a matter of time. Even more so when they have fallen Jedi on their side. Who either willingly joined the Empire (e.g. Vader and the Grand Inquisitor) or those who were tortured into service as the only means of survival (e.g. The Second Sister).

This perfectly explains why imo Fallen Order is one of the best Star Wars stories.
And for me from Order 66 onward i was right there with Cal, feeling the highs and lows, and when he gets knighted, i felt like I was getting knighted, we both had been on this journey, we both earned and learned what it is to be a Jedi.
I will also say i think the whole "Failure of the Jedi thing" was handled much better here then in the Last Jedi concept.
I do hope the sequal adds a bit more rpg elements and one game mechanic i have a major issue with is being aggressive helps you regain your force in combat when personally i don't think as a jedi killing and attacking should be the thing that gets you your force back.

The writing and story of this game is so incredible. This is what we should expect from movies/games. The music, the supporting cast, and most IMPORTANTLY Cal all have something special. The theme of this game is also quite incredible as in overcoming the past and accepting that. I think the voice actors were personal and you could relate to their struggle. Eno Cordova and Cere split the duties of “Obi Wan” from Episode 4 as the wise older person. This is an incredible game and the dialogue reflects that. I think this is what Star Wars is all about and I hope they continue this with the final game in the trilogy.

It's great how Cals confidence in his powers and conection to the force grows at the same time the players abilities grow. I'm not sure I've played a game, that does that as well as Fallen Order, before.
I loved the scene where Cal and Cere drop down to Nur. Cal looks like he has major flashbacks to the last time he was in an escape pod. Last time he was afraid, but now he overcomes that fear and calms himself. Last time he fled from the empire, this time he is breaking into their facility.
The ending of him deciding to destroy the holocron, protecting the children, instead of bringing them into this dangerous way of life is also perfect.
I hope the next game will have more friendly NPCs and a couple more characters and locations from the shows and movies.

This is actually a genuinely enlightening analysis of the game, even tho I thoroughly enjoyed the game since it came out the game my main question thats bounced around my head is "Why Dark Souls?" like of all the choices they could've made for a story driven star wars game why choose one that resets your progress relatively far back whenever you fail? (and you will fail)
This video has finally made me understand it, while it's still not my personal favorite style of gameplay I now feel it actually serves to re-enforce the themes of the story.

Fallen Order came out at the perfect time. Right after Luke struggled with this same story, but dealing with the consequences of the other path taken. He rebuilt the Jedi, thought that would fix everything, then his Order fell. He spends the rest of the Sequels trying to accept that consequence and come back. Cal here took the other path, and he earned that right. I felt Fallen Order completed what TLJ didn't have time to fully develop, that being the Jedi's failures and what else can be done.

I really like how Merrin and Cal sort of have similar powers and they utilize them in different, but similar ways. Cal can sense Force Echoes, while Merrin can physically raise her dead Nightsister friends. Cal uses the Force Echoes to heighten his understanding of the world, himself and others. He keeps their memories alive in spirit through him, much like how Jaro Tapal, Eno Cordova, Cere and even Trilla are with him wherever he goes. Finding Force Echoes gives you experience (quite literally) and enriches the world (again, quite literally) by illuminating the backgrounds. What used to be a meaningless corner with a dead body is now the brave last stand, or the fatal mistake of some long-forgotten soul. But now Cal knows of it and keeps it in his heart, letting it at least in tiny parts guide his life. Merrin, meanwhile, uses her necromancy to fight off intruders to a desolate, meaningless ruin. She utilizes her sisters in a futile way to keep the memory of Dathomir and the Nightsisters alive. It exists, the dead are shambling around, but there is no life to it. There is no point to it, no point to Merrin, until she tags along with Cal. Through her journey she'll be able to keep the true memory of Dathomir alive and I'm hoping that a sequel might do something with that as well (like her finding a new group of people that will, spiritually, become the new Nightsisters).

Rogue One and Bad Batch S1 are also really good Star Wars stories, I just love them so much, not to mention Rebels, TCW, Mando, Rots, the OT, and much, much more, but Hot darn Fallen Order is such a good story and game. From visuals to music to characters and to story, there’s everything I could ever want. Released at an odd times for video games, right before Thanksgiving, I had no idea what to think about this game before I played it. It blew me away in every way imaginable, and I play it every thanksgiving as a tradition. I resonate with Cal and his choices to change not only because he must, but because he should. Also, at a dying time for Star Wars, where the last of the horrid Disney trilogy was releasing, and a new show had only just begun, Fallen Order revived Star Wars by taking place in the Star Wars universe, but completely telling its own narrative and embracing change in the Star Wars universe. Change for the characters, locations, ideas, and even story. It is such a good video game, easily the best I’ve ever played, and I recommend 20/10 for whom ever has not. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I’m more excited than ever to play through it again.

Fallen order is by far my favourite singleplayer game, Ive played through it more times than I can count and have 100%ed everything in atleast 1 save file which I like to go back to every once in awhile to read all the data logs, and with a sequel on the horizon I cant wait to feel it all over again

I think it would be cool if you could do a video on Star Wars Rebels, particularly the journeys of Kanan and Ezra since both of them had interesting character arcs
This might be a hot take but imo Kanan is one of the best characters in the franchise; he has struggles and flaws but in the end he was a true Jedi through and through, and he managed to do what Anakin couldn't with balancing his love and his duty

    • @ArTorrPresents

I love this perspective on Kanan. He is a powerful character in that regard, to be sure. As for a video on Rebels... stay tuned!!

This game had a clear message and it showed it excellently! I remember I got the game despite the skepticism around at the time and I got into it right off the bat! I managed to finish the game in a weekend and I played it again over a week to finish it 100% on master difficulty. That is how much I loved this game. The story, characters, atmosphere, soundtrack, all of it! Except for the optimization. My PC didn't like this game...
Hats off to the creators of the game and to you for making this video! Criminally underrated channel

What is also a great detail is how Vader is portraied. In many games he would be the endboss, the one you have to defeat. But not in Jedi: Fallen Order. There he is portraied as the powerhouse he ist. It would be unreasonble to belive that he coud defeat Vader. Instead it is your job to escape him, to only survive, to stay with your realistic options.
