I grew up with Garrett. I was with them on this scout trip. I was 10 at the time. It was surreal not going home with him, not seeing him at school, or riding the bus home with him. Hopefully one day he can be found.

@@AustinT94 So sorry for your experience. I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but in other places on the internet (specifically, Reddit) it has been stated that no one else actually saw Garrett on that trip. That no one else saw him fishing or heading back to camp, etc. Can you confirm whether or not that's true? When you say, "I was with them on this scout trip," does that mean you actually saw him there? I'd like to share that with the people on Reddit if their information is faulty.

I’ve done the same thing. Just this year my 10 year old and I were out on the AT. Had set up camp and played a little while. He asked if he could go to the creek by himself. 100yrds. Straight down the trail. I said sure. Got a little worried and found him sitting on the ground upset (right next to camp). He somehow had gotten lost and was embarrassed. I told him it’s ok. We’ve all gotten lost but at the same time wondered “how?” To myself. Also said don’t be embarrassed but you yell for me if you get lost, I’ll come for you like my hairs on fire buddy. All that to say I see how it can happen

You sound like a great, caring dad! Your son was so smart to stay in one place when he realized he was lost. That’s always rule number 1. Did he learn that from you or is he a simply a young man with good judgment and common sense? Too many have been lost when they get disoriented and start to wonder away and end up far from the location they’re seeking.

Very recently, the Valle Grande Caldera in the Jemez Mountains above Los Alamos, formerly privately owned by Texas ranchers, has become a national recreation area. I got lost when I was 5 or 6 years old in the neighborhood. A kid had a new bicycle and we all could try it out and make a round the block on it. Very straight forward but somehow I got lost, like a brain fart got disoriented. Maybe because it was getting dark I failed to recognize where I was. Anyways, some people in a street called the cops because they noticed I was lost. I do not really remember the details but it must have been a traumatic experience for me....cant even remember how the cops got in contact with my parents.

I was a boy scout and I was also in the Army. I have a lot of training and experience being in the woods and even I have been turned around on hikes. Experience helps but the wilderness is just that. 175 yards is a long way, I'm surprised his father allowed him to walk that distance considering he felt he needed to give him directions. That meant that he knew his son was unfamiliar with the path to get to the campsite. I'm not putting blame on the father, this was just a tragic circumstance, but we all need to appreciate the wilderness. Thank you for bringing awareness to this, hopefully someone can learn something, and another tragedy can be prevented.

I, too, wondered about foul play as sexual deviants often seek out their child victims in rural and remote areas, as well as small towns, as children aren’t as attuned to crime and possible predators as those in more urban settings and thus are more trusting. Still, since the Scout base camp was so close to Garrett’s fishing spot, I would think either his dad or the Scouts and other adults would have heard him shout out in fear as he were being abducted. Another alternative, one that happens sometimes: that an area may have been searched multiple times, then suddenly, someone spots part of the missing person’s remains in a location or very close to a location which had been searched multiple times by multiple people. I hope Garrett’s family and friends will have an answer very soon.

my family was camping somewhat in the area that same weekend. i’ll never forget that gut wrenching feeling when we were leaving on Sunday and snowflakes were starting to fall. If he was out there there’s no way he would have survived that night with only a jacket and no camping gear.
I’ve since camped in the same basin where he went missing and it is so eerie and just doesn’t make sense to me. It’s pretty dense forest but he went missing in a 200 yd stretch between camp and the lake and search efforts began within like half an hour in a basin that would echo voices. I don’t know what happened but I don’t think he just got lost in that short amount of time. And nearly 20 years later nothing has ever been found

    Great coverage, Bryan!
Another one that's more suspicious than mysterious: there's only one logical reason that fishing pole never turned up. Anyone would have dropped it after they felt lost. It was buried with him. As in so many of these cases, there's only 1 person who saw all this wet shoes and walking around the lake nonsense.

Never ever let a child hike alone, put away your fishing gear and go with the child! Put down your book and go with the child. Do not relax, if you want to relax then don’t take children with you.

At 4 years old I got out of my 12 years old brothers sight inside a grocery store in Avondale, AZ in 1973. We lived in the middle of the desert at that time- only 1 school K-12. I left my brother in the check out line and ran all the way home by myself. I had to cross empty space that included an enormous man made ditch and then even more desert. My dad said I went almost a whole mile home by myself so fast that nobody believed I hadn't been dropped off. But I was not- I ran home because I thought my brother forgot me as he often did. The thing when you're that little is that climbing is so much easier since you're so low to the ground already. I was so small that I'm sure it all seemed way more vast and the ditch more deep but still - I did it out of complete fear. I always wonder if a search shouldn't also include starting at the furthest possible points then to work inward- while others do the usual.

I grew up learning how to camp and hike in the Unita mountains, I grew up in one of the towns right near them. I doubt that Garrett was taken, it is more likely he strayed and fell into a ravine, or rock crevice. If you've gone hiking or recreated at all in the Uintas you know it's very treacherous, lots of boulder fields the higher in elevation you go.

I'm a scout leader (my son's name is Garrett) and I tell this story to my scouts any time someone whines about getting a buddy to go with them to the bathhouse or anywhere, even if they can see it in the distance. I drill them over and over about what to do if they ever lose the trail or get lost: sit down somewhere safe and don't move, and start whistling. I've taught most of them to whistle with their fingers, it saves your voice from yelling. I've seen videos on several cases of missing scouts, and most of them are before 2007 when new youth protection measures were put in place. In every case, I can immediately see where the adults went wrong, and it almost always involved leaving the kid behind or letting the child go by himself, or only having one adult present. Always have a buddy, always two deep leadership. Before we got to our present troop, one of the leaders told me a story about hiking with the boys up at Philmont Scout ranch and encountering straggling kids coming down Mount Baldy, where their young inexperienced leader had gotten frustrated with hiking stragglers and just *left* them there to come down by themselves. They rounded up all the lone kids, marched them back down the mountain and proceeded to find their scoutmaster and tear him a new one. No one goes by themselves in the wilderness, no children, no adults. My heart just aches for that family, the troop and everyone involved. The other kids must have been so traumatized. I don't know that I would survive losing my son like this.

I also agree about foul play. it was a remote area but there was a group of Boy Scouts camped nearby. tt does not make sense that a stalker would just wander the wilderness looking for kids to kidnap. He would be aware of the group of scouts camping st the lakes..Maybe he was a member of the community and knew when these trips were planned? Just a thought. A stalker was watching and saw a child, Garret, leave his father/guardian & take off alone back to camp. it must have happened very fast, because it was only 20 mins until the father went searching for him. he took him and his fishing pole, without a sound or signs of a struggle. Very creepy., IF it was a man. maybe something supernatural? Sasquatch have been reported to appear and disappear and project a force field that immobilises people and dogs..and that is the stuff of Paulides 411 research. or maybe Garrett got lost and ran, not walked, in panic far out of the seach area. But you would think that search dogs could follow his trail. This is such a tragedy and it has been almost 20 yrs. Hopefully someday someone will find him.hopefully alive, somewhere. There have been cases where the child grows up in captivity and escapes, or is rescued.

Look at some of the old cases where a body was discovered decades later. I don't think people realize how VAST the wilderness is, and people in the pioneer days and earlier would just vanish entirely without a trace.

When my brother was 15-16 being in boy scouts they had to hike 10, 20, 25 mile hikes, one Saturday he, one other his age and a junior leader 20, went to do a 25 miles hike in the mountains above southern California, they had hiked 10 miles when the leader decides to go off trail to finish the hike, my brother did not want to do this, this leader insisted and after another 5 miles they were lost! They spent the night on the mountain without any camping gear, the authorities were alerted because no one made it back to their car, late Sunday I remember my father's pacing, at about 11 am Monday the call came they had been found because of my brother's sense of direction, against the leader's advice to stay put my brother took off, hiked alone in the dark over 10 miles with nothing but a flashlight until he made it back to alert the authorities, he was actually angry because he knew not to hike off trail but he had to listen to this leader, I rode up with my dad on Monday morning to where the helicopter was bringing them in and this actually made the news.

I tend to think Garrett missed the trail going back, got lost, and kept on going, or he realized he was lost, and started back to where he thought his father was, and popped out on the lake's edge a distance from where his father was, attempted to work his way over to his father, fell in the lake, gear and all. I don't think he made it back to change his clothing, they would have found that right away.

I agree. If you’re on a trail and can’t initially see a bldg to walk towards directly then at a certain moment all there is is trees. If it’s not happened to you in real life then you can never get that a certain point there’s a look left, right, ahead, back…wait which way is forward…it all looks the same. Happened to me as an adult. Freaked me out. Luckily I was close to a road and finally got close to hear.
I’ve watched stories on here where children are frightened of the yelling, helicopters and have hid. Later they are found and say they heard ppl yelling but got scared.
They’ve found so many ppl 1/4 or 1/2 mile from the trail. Often died from days og going in circles.
Finally walk a block away. Try to talk to your friend on the block down. Very hard to hear specifics. Lots a repeating info loudly. Now both of you walk onto ppl’s front lawns with trees and gates between you. You’re a block from each other but now the foliage blocks and absorbs the sound. Essentially you’re not in communication at that moment. Think how many scenarios where people go walk to the other person in about 60 seconds but w the woods blocking sound and the person has to be yelling right towards you to hear.
Imagine that friend a block down when you could see one another and the friend turns away and is yelling something. You can barely hear it when looking at them, imagine facing away and not even knowing someone’s
over there 👉 looking for me. Yelling. The sound would be faint. Hard to hear specific words…..

They would have searched the lake and those lakes get shallow in the fall and are not very deep. They would have found the body. He almost certainly just kept walking while lost went very, very far from those lakes before succumbing to the cold.

There are a number of lakes in close proximity that could easily confuse an excited/scared mind. There are also a number of crags, ravines with sharp rocks etc. all over the area. He could have easily fallen into one of those.
If he got scared and bolted, he easily could have run far outside the search area. As part of the search party, we walked within a few feet of each other, looked up into trees, under tree skirts, in/around rock formations and cliffs. We covered around 10 miles that day. Light snow was falling on us, but not sticking on the ground.

There was a case back in the 80s where a family was heading back up a well used trail in Delta Park in Oregon aftrr a day of fishing. The youngest daughter needed to go to the bathroom so they told their 12 year old son to go off trail with her so she could relieve herself and then catch up. After waiting at he vehicle for 30 minutes... the rest of the family went back to fetch the two children. The cops treated this as lost kids and expected no foul play, but they found the 2 kids bound with their throats cut the next day. The killer was never found. Their is evil in this world and I feel like evil was present this day for this poor kid.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone snatched him. Last time I was up there couple of years ago with my friend and my daughter and while we were hiking back to our car we ran into a very sketchy guy that was on some kind of drug or something. He literally slid down a patch of woods right in front of us on the trail and started walking towards us mumbling gibberish. When we told him to stop he wouldn’t. So we started walking backwards and I told my friend to pick up the sharpest and biggest rock she can find just in case. I grabbed one too and I told him that he better stay back. So he stopped on the spot as we kept backing up. we stood about 15 feet from him while he was LITERALLY STANDING LIKE A STATUE AND STARING AT US. Every single fear flashed in front of my eyes cause I was scared he was gonna hurt my daughter. The trail we were on had a five or six foot drop with river at the bottom so I was worried he’s gonna toss my daughter down and she would drown because the rivers are super high and strong during that time of the year and since we had a lot of snow the year before the river was very strong.
We stood there for maybe 20 to 30 minutes that felt like an eternity. Thankfully a couple came down from behind us and I asked them if it’s okay if we go down with them because that creep was following us. Mind you this man looked like he was well over 6’5. He was towering over us like an ogre when he first slid down from the bushes.
The couple agreed so we started walking down slowly. I was holding my daughter’s hand so hard that she had to tell me to loosen my grip several times. I have never been so afraid in my life up until that point.
When we walked up to where he was standing he tried to get confrontational with the husband of the couple. But luckily the husband was able to get him to move away so we can pass. And once we did he then started walking about ten feet behind us so the husband stopped and let us pass so that he can walk behind. He followed us like that for about a mile until he literally disappeared into the bushes. We thanked the couple so many times and hopped into our car as fast as possible. Literally as we were driving out of our parking spot we saw him in standing and staring at us at the edge of the trail. I HAVE NOT HIKED SINCE THEN. This has never happened before in the ten plus years I’ve hiked all throughout the Unitas and other areas of Utah. I decided that I’ll never go hiking without a gun, taser and a pepper spray.
Needless to say people need to be very careful out there cause you never know what may be lurking in the bushes. And something like that could’ve happened to that boy too. Especially if there’s nothing but a shoe left.

A question...If they were fishing and he got wet and went to change, why would he have his pole with him? It was morning, so in theory he would be going back to fish. Also, why weren't any of the others scouts fishing as well? Usually, scouts 'buddy up' and have an adult with them. (Although, I am a lifetime member of the Girl scouts, so it may be different.) @@Star-gw2sj yes of course they were all looked at but there was just no way the father could have been involved due to other witnesses accounts..as for the other leaders I don't know but I doubt it. There are many oddities to this case, I agree with that. I do think it's probable that there was someone else involved but I don't think it was any of the group they were with. Their scout leaders all even had the kids go out and look. We don't even know if the sock that was found was his due to the Sar agent that said he took his socks off that were the same. And even if it was his sock, what happened to him, or his fishing pole. They did a huge search on this case. Frankly I don't know what to think. But I personally don't believe the father had anything to do with it. He's done so much to not only search for his son but setup programs to help others. That's just my opinion.

It's been nearly 20 years since this disappearance. It will be difficult to find any trace of him now. But I do hope they do. Given the rocky terrain I can see how remains may be hidden in the cracks between rocks and such. I wonder if they searched the water? You didn't mention it. But it's a possibility. Also a mountain lion could have carried him off. That would have been swift and unnoticed. Mountain Lions rarely attack people but if they do they go for children or attack an adult who is kneeling down or in a position that makes them look smaller and more vulnerable.
I would imagine that the authorities have looked into the father. If there had been an accident or drowning or something at the lake he might have covered it up. But if the police have cleared him, then who? It's hard to imagine a stranger going unnoticed kidnapping a 12 yr old in the wilderness with all those boy scouts around.
As sad as it is, my bet is that either a Mountain Lion or his father had something to do with it. I hate saying that about his father, but all things need to be considered. RIP young man!

Bryan. Hit me up, when putting together your team. I (was born/live in) the Four corners area, on the New Mexico side. I’ve traversed the wilderness areas of all four of these states.. I have loads of hours logged… I am an endurance athlete with an education in healing, the human body, inter dimensional physics, chemistry, etc. P.S….. I grew up on a farm and was in 4-H. Boom.

Hi there, thank you! Where are you located out of? You can email me if you don't want to share it in the comments. (My email is in the description) I myself train like crazy and believe endurance training is better than just power lifting. Can you believe this one person said to me that my t levels must be low because I sounded sad in one of my last videos. Smh.. unreal. I told them that any good person would be sad about losing anyone and there's no shame in actually showing your emotions. Definitely email me and we can discuss sar. Sounds like you're a great person and the kind of people that any team would be happy to have. Thanks for reaching out! Keep up that training!

@@heatherhancock2546 wow that's awesome! That's one state I've never been but have always wanted to visit and hike on the CDT. Do you do a lot of hiking in your area?

for that matter, why would a kid that age even want to change his shoes? I had wet feet for the first 15 years of my life...
