Your recipe looks almost like the one we made in Boy Scouts when I was young. We used to add black beans in addition to the kidneys, at least double the garlic, 2-3 times as much chili powder and some cayenne for good measure. I love a nice thick chili with some heat, and I don't mean temperature.
Beans belong in chili!!! As does a can of corn, I have been perfecting my chili recipe for some time now. I'm glad I watched this as I will add more chili powder next time, I believe that's what its missing....enough chili powder! But you are 100% right, I love to try everyone else's chili because it is one of those things that you really can do this or that to and it usually turns out good and is hard to screw up!
Good recipe. I’m going to try it in my dutch oven I had to buy to make the awesome bread you did in one of your videos. If you ask 10 people for their chili recipe you’ll get 10 different recipes. Heck, ask 100 and the same result. Really nice to watch one of your 4 year old videos. You show the same passion today, just more polished. Cheers, Jim
Can't wait to get back in the woods again. I've been so busy with life, definitely going to have biscuits and gravy for breakfast and some of my chili for dinner
No wrong way to make chili in my opinion. Especially when you are out camping and cooking over open fire! Cumin is an excellent chili spice. Thanks for the video!
This looks like a good recipe! For my chili I use 2 pounds of ground beef,1 large onion, 2-3 cloves of garlic, 1 can of kidney beans, 1 can of crushed tomatoes, 1 cup of beef broth, 1 tsp of salt, 2 tsp of cumin, 3- 4 tablespoon of chili powder and 2 tablespoon of paprika. It's a great recipe and would definitely recommend it!
Our recipies r almost identical... i brown the beef, add drained beans, season with black pepper garlic and onion, then water to the top of the beef, 1 small can of tomato paste, and a layer of chili powder... the only major difference being i cook mine real thick, like you could stand it on a bun like a sloppy joe, i also like to finish it with cheddar, fritos and a line of katchup, like a frito pie
Making me hungry! Chili is also one of my camp specialties. Hard to beat the taste, warmth and comforting feeling that a good bowl of hot chili can provide to weary, cold campers!
Yep, there's so many ways to make chili. Growing up, my dad always had to make two pots, one with beans for me and him and one without for my mom and sister. Now, though, I think I prefer my mother in law's Chicago style chili. I never knew people put macaroni in chili! It's great!
Totally agree with the chili powder. I put a 1/3 cup of Chili powder into my chili with the same batch size. Personally, I like to add a teaspoon or two of Chipotle Chili powder (combined regular and chipotle add up to 1/3 cup.) Gives it a nice smokey flavor.
I use way more onion. Cubed bacon, goes very good with the beef. And also bay leaves, cumin and cilantro. But the rest is spot on. Every man his version.
Awesome video Dan thank you sir. I have a question. I make chili for camp in Lake George every year. I always wanted to make it in my dutch oven but, I heard and read that the acid from the tomato sauce ruins the seasoning and damages the cast iron. Do you find this, do you just re-season it, and or how do you clean it at camp? Thanks in advance
Bold indeed! If you want to go bolder yet, get some hot & mild dry chiles and grind up your own powder. You hit it on the head, it's important to use enough of it!
off wall question. how do you keep wood bowls and utinsles clean? that's a little bit of surface area for stuff to seep into, what's the procedure for insuring it being safe to eat with over the long term? pretty sure a smartass somewhere will say, just make a new one. well, you may be part beaver, part woodchuck but I'm not. with the time it would take me to make these, I'd need them long term. and brewing history warns me of risks involved with the use of wood. and they didn't exactly have a solid plan for cleaning well.so I'm curious how we can do it.
This the best you tube chilli recipe and should go down as the mother lode of all of them all to my fellow chilli freaks I wish you god speed to the guy in this video. Bon appetite.
bit to heavy on the tamatos lol. I tend to thicken with flour but basicly when I make my season pack for chili, that's pretty much on point. never thought of the bouillon cube. might try that out. I just never was a tomatoes guy. unless they are green, battered, and deep fried. can't resist those lol.
Been completing my cook kit over this last year and I think all I need is a smaller size Dutch oven like you’re using, a good bush pot, a small kettle, and a kuksa set. Any brand suggestions for any of these? Otherwise, good golly I want me some chili now!!
If you want really heavy duty kuska stuff check out kupilka brand, that Dutch oven came from Walmart I believe and it is a perfect size, kettles I may be carrying soon.
How about a video on some of the things you can do with those empty cans. You can improvise a pot, a mug, a bucket, build a stove or a lantern, have a reel for fishing, or probably a hundred other camp uses. You packed them in to camp, why not have them serve as many purposes as possible?
Gotta get a dutch oven! I enjoy a big chunk o' chedder and sour cream dollop.(great word) We have been known to add some rice or pasta as a meal extender. Please don't judge! 😂
This is northeastern white people chili for sure. You have to put some pepper in it. Bell pepper doesn't really count as a pepper. You need jalapeno or anaheim or something to really bring the spice.

Nice touch, different colored peppers!

That chili 🌶 and your homemade bread would be deliciously awesome 😎

I have some ghost peppers we grew last season in the freezer. You only need a half of one for a batch of your size because it's a very hot pepper.
I use way more onion. Cubed bacon, goes very good with the beef. And also bay leaves, cumin and
cilantro. But the rest is spot on. Every man his version.
Very good. Thank you very much
Finally someone who adds tomato soup like I do
dude, that looks amazing! be good, Dan!

Perfect timing! We had a chili cook off at work today. The only problem is tonight my wife thinks someone keeps honking a horn outside.
Where's the cornbread!!!!! Great video.
Absolutely making this next time I’m out with the buddies!
Black beans with the kidney or pinto beans, Cayenne, more garlic and cumin…looks really good!
Looked great.

I never heard of that..I make chili all the time and don’t see any I’ll effects in my Dutch oven
Good deal, I'm trying it then. Thank you brother!
Looks great. Do you have a recipe for beaver?
I bet that is good especially when they are snow on the ground
I Love To Cook My Own Food On My Campsite With Snow.
Great video,
You are making me hungry!
I wonder....did Nessmuk carry a Dutch oven?
Bold indeed! If you want to go bolder yet, get some hot & mild dry chiles and grind up your own powder. You hit it on the head, it's important to use enough of it!

Great video man!!! Glad I subbed

Don’t pick fly shit from pepper; rinse & wipe dry.
Reminds me, I oughta buy a bigger camp pot.
This the best you tube chilli recipe and should go down as the mother lode of all of them all to my fellow chilli freaks I wish you god speed to the guy in this video. Bon appetite.
bro that look hello bomb great all saving this video
Huh?
Who makes that small 2x3 or 3x5 oilskin or waxes canvas tarp you use to kneel on ??
That’s a piece of deer hide
Coalcracker Bushcraft under the deer hide you had a piece of canvas in one of your videos
Do you remember what video? Was it recent? I have a piece of brain tanned deer hide too that I use often
Do you work with Filson? Just got an old packer coat. Thing is tough.
Nice coat! And yes
bit to heavy on the tamatos lol. I tend to thicken with flour but basicly when I make my season pack for chili, that's pretty much on point. never thought of the bouillon cube. might try that out. I just never was a tomatoes guy. unless they are green, battered, and deep fried. can't resist those lol.
I just clean them with warm water make sure they are dry before storage so they don’t get moldy

Not exceptionally nutritious, but I love me some corn chips in my chili. 😋
Yummm....smoked chili !!
isn't tomatoes bad for cast iron?
Are you in your backyard?
I’m at my school property.
Looks really good. Break out those biscuits
cornbread with mine
👍
You can leave out the meat you can leave out the beans you can leave out almost anything that you have to have cumin
Nice
Now you have to do a cornbread video to go with the chili.
That’s what I was thinkin
topped with sour cream and cheddar cheese just a little
Gotta get a dutch oven! I enjoy a big chunk o' chedder and sour cream dollop.(great word) We have been known to add some rice or pasta as a meal extender. Please don't judge! 😂

🤤
I don’t see any spaghetti in that chili. 🤣
1 clove of garlic? Never trust a recipe that calls for just 1 clove of garlic lol 😜 always use 2 or more. Looks delicious thanks
Beef?!? Bushmen should eat venison!
Haha looks tasty.
Schnot “Wild breves” roam that part of PA.
