A Note From Lawrence:
Greg Lukianoff is a First Amendment lawyer by training. During his education he began to see how, even among organizations ostensibly created to help protect free speech, how actual free speech was improperly being conflated with harassment or bullying. When he went to work as a legal director of the nascent Foundation for Individual Rights in Education in around 2000, he quickly discovered that in academia, the one place where free speech and open inquiry should be valued above all else, actual free speech was under attack. In the intervening two decades, during which he rose to become director of that Foundation, now renamed to encompass the fact that the attacks on free speech that began in academia have proliferated throughout our society, he has actively worked to fight these attacks. Beyond his legal work, he has become a prolific writer. His 2018 book, co-written with Jonathan Haidt, entitled The Coddling of the American Mind, was influential in encouraging debate and discussion regarding the origins of the victimization mentality that was becoming prevalent in Western Society.
I have been admirer of Greg’s for some time, and have wanted to have a dialogue with him on the podcast. This year, with Rikki Schlott, Greg published The Canelling of the American Mind: How Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions and Threatens us All, and it provided us the ideal opportunity to get together to discuss both his own personal experiences , and also the general concerns we both have about the issues that form the heart of the new book.
What followed was a fascinating conversation about issues we should all care about. Regular readers of Critical Mass and listeners to The Origins Podcast will be aware of some of the examples and concerns we discussed, but I expect will nevertheless be surprised by the ubiquitous infiltration of cancel culture ideas into our society. We actually begin by defining Cancel Culture, a term that has often been misused and misunderstood in the popular media, and then discuss a variety of examples, before closing with a brief discussion of the ways that we can possibly combat it to produce a more tolerant, democratic society, and to save higher education as well. I hope you are provoked, enlightened, and energized by the conversation.

Greg, what universities have College Student Development and Administration Masters and PhD programs? I am aware of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, but where are these institutions, is there a list?
It's one thing to study Jung, Kohlberg, and Chickering as development theory. It's quite another to study Kendi and DiAngelo.
Excellent discussion. I feel like autodidacts have the advantage. The world at your fingertips. However, visiting academia is fulfilling. There are people who are as enthusiastic as you.
Somehow, a degree has come semi-circle. Trades used to be the dismissed. Now if you are a quality tradesman and salesman, you can make more than an ivy league grad easily.
Meanwhile a college degree limits your options to some extent in an environment where there is so much expendability because everyone can do it to a greater or lesser extent. Exceptions abound who are the ones in the right place at the right time with the right relationships and or any of them.

I may be paraphrasing, but the statement that:
"the most important thing is... _'awe and doubt'_ "
is a beautiful summary of the human condition.
It captures the essence of humanity, both spiritual and rational.
You should have both, they both reflect deep feelings we all have,
but they are in opposition, and we should all feel that tension.
Science could be described as the _religion of doubt._
The only fundamental truth is doubt of any truth.
No individual is capable of establishing objective truth.
Science is a community that follows not-obviously-false ideas.
In the end, we can feel awe and love, and take it to our heart,
but not make shallow claims that our feelings are universal.
Inside, the awe dominates, but outside the doubt must reign supreme.

It is quite saddening to hear about this situation in modern western societies, being from the UK this doesn't seem as prominent but of course I am aware this is still very strongly apparent here too. But I'm always thankful to Lawrence and his many amazing guests helping to spread free education, humility and rational thought across the world.

That’s like arresting people before they commit a crime. How do you keep hate speech from escalating without limiting it? The only way is with more speech - arguing convincingly against the hateful speech.
@@karagi101Yes, that totally worked on Weimar Germany and Rwanda. The answer to violence inciting proto Nazi newspapers and tribalist talk radio is more speech.
Even if humanity saw the same patterns repeat over and over again that lead to large scale mass killing, free speech is more important than hundreds of children and adult noncombatants being sadistically murdered.

@@Locrian08 We have laws criminalizing imminent threats of violence against a person (and in most countries, violence against particular groups based on sexual orientation, sex, nationality, skin colour, religion,…). Violence means physical violence btw.

As an emigrant from the US, it’s clear that US culture and institutions are thoroughly diseased by Dishonesty, Inauthenticity, Insecurity, Cowardice, and micro Power-Trips. These viruses are highly corrosive and dangerous. People who stay and resist and reform, as Lukianoff does, are admirable.
