  • Carlo Crivelli (1430/35 to about 1494) is one of the most important, but historically neglected, painters of the fifteenth century. Isabella Stewart Gardner purchased Crivelli's Saint George Slaying the Dragon in December 1897.
While few paintings in the Gardner Museum are more self-sufficient, Crivelli’s Saint George originated as part of a large altarpiece. It was this piece, as well as the five additional works that comprised the altarpiece, that inspired the Gardner's Ornament & Illusion: Carlo Crivelli of Venice exhibition.
