‘Great honour’: Scott Morrison announces plans to retire from parliament

- Former prime minister Scott Morrison has announced he will retire from parliament next month.
Mr Morrison confirmed he would be leaving parliament at the end of February to take on “new challenges” in the global corporate sector and spend more time with his family.
“I am extremely grateful to my family, friends, local community and local party members and supporters in Cook for their incredible support during this time, that has enabled me to serve my country at the highest level and make Australia a stronger, more secure and more prosperous country,” he said in a social media post.
“It has been a great honour to serve as the Member for Cook and as Prime Minister.”
The former prime minister also congratulated Opposition leader Peter Dutton on the “great job” he has done leading the Liberal Party and Coalition since the last election.
Mr Morrison, 55, was elected into the House of Representatives in 2007 after he won the preselection for the seat of Cook.
He resigned from the Liberal Party leadership after Labor claimed victory in the 2022 federal election.
