Mine has 250,000 miles and I can't believe how 'brand new' the engine sounds at idle...For my work, I drive a lot of Modern Cars and everytime I drive something like GM/Vauxhall, even with low mileage, the drivetrain always sounds BAD, like something is going to break. I personally think Volvo engines from that era are some of THE longest lasting you can buy in any car, easily on par with Honda/Toyota

I live in Denmark, in 2012 I bought a 5.0 tuned FoxBody Mustang in Munich. on the way home I was overtaken by a yellow Volvo, so the Mustang was sold, since then I have driven the Volvo 850R tuned in Sweden approx. 460 hp, this is the car for the rest of my life
@@crispybacon420 it's a smaller displacement but the v10 is still a multiple of the i5. i4 will sound "similar" to v8, i5 to v10, i3, i6/v6 to v12. Its the same firing order, thus they're armonics of each other. I have an s60 2.4i 140 and if you get it right with revs and load it does sound very similar to a viper
I almost wouldn't even consider it a sleeper anymore, almost everyone into cars knows how much power they can put out, and because they're old they don't weigh much compared to modern cars

Something a lot of people don't realize is the 850 wagon is actually not that heavy for a wagon. I fact it's actually lighter than a lot of modern sedans including the RS4.
well a 240 is like 1350 ish the 850 is closer to 1460ish kg, volvos seem big and heavy but are surprisingly light, personally i dont like the trend of 1800kg+ sedans and stuff of today, lighter cars feel livelier to drive

I've had a few Volvo 850s from 10V to 20V and the T5... it always blows my mind how fun these cars are to drive and also to work on.. the Volvo 850 gives a new unseen driving experience in my opinion.. so goood!
LOVE IT ! I have a 1996 850R Estate. Manual swapped, re-painted Dark Olive. 18" Pegasus with R Brake upgrade, VAS Tune, 3" Throttle Body, larger injectors, ethanol injection, and of course upgraded suspension + C60 brace.

I love my ‘96 855R manual. She has a sensible 436bhp and I love driving her, she does however have her own personality and signature sound that even non car people appreciate. Great build!
480hp is quite street friendly compared to the more insane youtube 850's out there, but still sounds damn good, i loved revving the snot out of my 850 GLT, i would've loved to hear a fast fly-by of it

@@bartp7969 ill explain torque steer, open differentials will always spin the wheel with least grip, so when you floor it only one of the 2 wheels will break traction. Torque steer happens on front wheel drive cars with open differentials where one of the wheels will start spinning faster than the other wheel, causing the car to steer on its own, and when you try to correct it with steering, it usually just starts spinning the other wheel when the weight shifts to the other side, and the same thing happens again. You can see torque steer happening in the video where he floors it in a low gear and the car goes side to side. You cant really get rid of it fully unless you weld/lock the diff completely which absolutely RUINS all drivability and is rarely done on fwd.
Good memories! I had 2 Volvo S70's, both 1998. One was a GLT 2.4L Turbo (Low pressure Turbo) and the other was S70 T5 SE (2.3L Turbo, High Pressure, like this "R") Both cars were auto slush boxes, but I can say that I pulled some good moves in my Volvo's. I sure miss the simplicity of the 1990's. As well as the iconic sound of the 5 Cylinder engine! Always good to hear that this puts a smile on Max's face!

Turbolag kids know: Rolling start at 2nd gear by pushing full throttle whilst the left foot decently stands on the brake pedal to keep the rev up at optimum boost rpm and then simply release the brakes. Voila - off you fly :D
850 and the first V70, which is similar. I am going to drive these until they outlaw gasoline cars, absolutely love them! They easy to work on, parts are cheap and they very well designed and reliable. Fun fact, back in 1994 I took my driving exam in a brand new 850 and I was hooked ever since, had to wait many years until I could afford one tho... Great video thx guy's.
What an absolute monster. I had a poster of an 850r alongside a Ford Sierra rs500 on my bedroom walls as a kid. Always had a soft spot for these Swedish beasts and this one makes me smile.

I had a 98' t5 S70 as my first volvo. Made around 370 and it was so cool. Didnt have that much lag, I feel like when you get into the 400 range with volvo's its fun but not responsive enough. Very cool car however. (current volvo: 04 S60R M66 stock)
My buddy got given my dad's '98 v70r awd, he swapped the 2 liter engine for a 2.4, did the ethanol conversion and now she pulls super hard. His next project for it is to add an intercooler and a new air filter, as well as change the wheels. Would be cool to see it dyno'd one day.

I can that Bilsport magazine featured an article about an engineer called Milan Kniesevitch that built a seqential turbo setup on the 850R engine that prodused a turbine smooth 600 bhp engine it would pull from 1200rpm to how ever high you dared to rev it. It was a real marvel. However. Volvo never. Put it to mass production. A real shame...

Some years ago I owned a 740 GLT (My first car) not as crazy as this but still an amazing car with this special retro feeling. And the best of it all was, that it was rear wheel drive. Had a blast drifting around every winter here in Sweden. Man I miss those days... Right now I'm driving a boring Fiat. I almost cried when I sold my 740. It will always have a special place in my hearth...

I had one. Just the normal upgrade to 300bhp. ECU Remap, custom downpipe, some small changes. 1 bhp per 5 kilo's. Fun. Still. When accelerating away from a pushy vw pheaton w12 in Germany it felt a bit light in the back doing 270.
Got a black '96 850R automatic saloon sitting in my driveway, it needs brakes, suspension and a negative/earth cable for the battery and it is good to go. Talk about a sleeper it has a few scuffs and dings, the laquer/protective coating has gone in many places but hey the bodies don't rust. Will get it roadworthy again someday

480hp through the front wheels alone is never a good idea. So "street friendly" certainly should be looked at in relative terms here.

Got a black '96 850R automatic saloon sitting in my driveway, it needs brakes, suspension and a negative/earth cable for the battery and it is good to go. Talk about a sleeper it has a few scuffs and dings, the laquer/protective coating has gone in many places but hey the bodies don't rust. Will get it roadworthy again someday
