Amazing how green it is. It's like a drive through the Windows XP wallpaper.

I guess this is the Bay Area's answer to the Cajon Pass in Greater LA! Incredible footage, both the I-580 and the Lincoln Highway are amazing in their own right.

This is the same route my family take everytime my family go to the bay. If I recall, when my family moved to Lathrop, the city bordering tracy, we frequently visited cities in the bay like fremont, and union city. I still remember my parents always took this "shortcut" route with Exit 57 on 580 which bypasses Livermore and the 680 Junction completely, however it did take you through California 84 which could take you to I-680. Cool!

Think back on what the old US 50 looked like in Alameda County before the existence of I-580 CA. Over the years, I-580 CA has widened and expanded while the Bay Area grows rapidly.

Nice little drive over the pass. Thanks for adding Historic US 50 over it as well.

There was actually an interim between the old Altamont Road, and the coming of I-580. Sometime in (I believe) the late 1940's, U.S. 50 was rerouted to a new 4-lane highway, which followed the same route as the present I-580. In fact, the eastbound 4 lanes of 580 were actually laid on the roadbed of the old 4-lane highway. I remember traveling it as a kid, when it was still U.S. 50. I really miss those days.
Edit: I found an online page from "The Tracy Press", announcing the opening of this new highway, dated July 15, 1938.

That's correct. Indeed, on the eastbound lanes on I-580 (not shown here), as you come down from the pass you actually go under an arched railroad bridge that is obviously much older than I-580 that was constructed as part of the US-50 bypass.

I've been over that pass when the rush hour traffic was going west and, thankfully, I was heading east. I'd almost prefer taking the old road if I wasn't in a rush.

I can recall when the Altamont Pass was out beyond the boonies. It was nothing but open highway past Livermore. I still have not recovered from the shock I got back in '99, when I saw that slow, bumper-to-bumper commute traffic now extended eastward past Tracy. The Altamont pass was no longer open road. I just wanted to puke. it wasn't supposed to be that way.

Caltrans is considering building a new highway from the I-205 / I-580 junction (called the CA-239 project) that would head northwest along Byron Rd / Byron Hwy / Vasco Rd (skirting Mountain House), past the Byron airport (giving access to that), up to where the CA-4 bypass ends at Marsh Creek Rd / Vasco Rd.

I remember reading that Lincoln Highway was later realigned to Solano County, CA once the Carquinez Bridge opened and US-40 was aligned from Sacramento to Vallejo to Berkeley sections.
