a note to take away from this is to become such a good and trusted mechanic that other shops don't only call you to come over they leave you with the hole shop
The Southern Tier of rural Western NY where the only time you lock your car is at church on Sunday morning during Zucchini season so you don't get a seat full. :o)
Yes sir, they just tell you to lock up on the way out :D
South Main Auto Repair : that Would be Quite A Surprise to Hop in Ur Seat in Ur Best Church Suit & Flop Down on ZUCINNI Surprise!! LOL
I am not picking on the typo, because I constantly do the same. But I laughed heartily when I real "the hole shop" I wonder if that wasn't a typo.
@@screamingbeagleproductions1876 if you live in Jamestown you better lockdown everything lol meth heads eveeywhere
Wiggle the windshield wiper!! That's my go to diagnostic approach now.
Ripper vid Mr O. I just love it how the the other 'shops' call on you when they can't find it...
Man, I work at Hyundai and see this all the time, was screaming through the monitor! Good call and great diagnosis!
I ordered some stuff off amazon including that Astro 40SL light you use. On the warranty card it asks "how did you hear about us" Obviously, I selected "other" and wrote in South Main Auto on RUclips....lol
Thats a common problem on that vintage vehicle. I never thought about using a head light bulb as an additional tool for a short finder. I learn something from each video i watch of yours.
You are the best guy on RUclips keep up the hard work
I second that!
I don't think anyone can stay up with you. Your family should be very proud of you. Can't wait to meet you someday. Later Dr. O
I was always told "never listen to the last one working on it, he didnt find the problem".
You definitely make the distinction between your average mechanic and a technician that can diagnose problems like this. I’m currently in tech school to be a diesel mechanic and I want to be as good as you at diagnosing problems (especially electrical). I love your videos! 👍🏻
Knowing which fuse continues to blow...and then isolating from that point was a big help. But, it's also having those SPECIAL diagnostic tool you have. Nice logical approach to the issue.
The only special diagnostic tool he has is his brain. Everything else can be purchased
Good zoom photography and excellent methodical diagnosis. That circuit breaker is a must for the tool kit----- worth it's weight in gold.
Tom OConnor And fuses.
one of the leaders in youre field. together with youre personality. makes you almost addictive
The field trips like this are cool. That part of the state is quite fortunate to know you and be able to call you.
When will your videos ever end? Never I hope, keep em coming Eric
Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes looking at the problem helps out big time. Nice video Eric.
The Plow Guys So true, happened to me at work a few times.
So true, we have all been there
The Plow Guys Been there
As a pile of fried fuses cascade to the floor..."That looks like frustration."
Priceless.
well it sure does right!?
Outstanding vid Eric! I'm glad they called you instead of shooting the parts cannon at it! You found the short in under 20 minutes..WOW. You are a diagnostic guru. Shorts are a nightmare..but you make it look easy. You are well respected in the community. 🤘
Wanted to see the look on their faces when you showed them the problem. Thanks for taking us along Eric.
Dude! The GM dealer has had my 2014 Sierra since Wednesday. They can't figure it out. Need more guys like you.
Shaking my head.
+dpeagles
That's because most techs today are "parts swapers" and not
true diagnostic technicians like Eric O is.
flat rate and rushing is what causes it, like a bunch of drones doing what the "idiot box tells them" good ole computers :)
watershed44 Or in the case of this shop, fuse swappers...oh to have been a fly on the wall to see the red faces when Eric showed them the issue..."there's your problem, lady.... the wires are bare and it let the smoke out..replace that part, put in a new fuse and the smoke shall be contained again"
dpeagles time for a trade to Honda
@@lti134 I bought a tundra in 2017. 👍👍👍
How to fix any car issue:
1) get a diagnosis
2) throw diagnosis in trash
3) take it to SMA
😁
Eric, anything electrical is filled with magic smoke. First rule of electrical and electronic repair is avoid letting the magic smoke out. When you do the system fails and a lot of bad things can start happening in a big hurry. You are on a posting binge. Keep 'em coming.
I think you are too modest with your skill. It's not just luck that leads to a quick diagnosis. As with many fields, there are so many intangibles that come along with diagnostic work, like little details in how something sounds, or when the fuse blows. A lot also comes from experience and, with wire shorts, knowing what places are vulnerable or likely to be problems (like spots where the harness turns a tight corner or passes near an edge). Your skill leads to a quick and accurate diagnosis, not luck. Keep up the good work! This industry needs more technicians like you.
If you're good then you don't need to be lucky, and you sir is very good at what you do! Great video and thanks for bring us along.
You've got to love the wiggle test. Great video work Eric, keep em coming. Regards Stewart, Australia
Congrats man!!!! 80K Subscribers...should have 1 million. But we have already spoke about the BS involved in that. I always look forward to your video's more than any other mechanic. Keep up the good work!!
It's amazing to me that most shops lack basic Electrical fundamentals. Kudos Eric O
Nice job once again Dr.O! love seeing the diagnoses and sometimes you just can't beat the "ole wiggle" test!
Well done Eric, mobile calls to another shop. I think your service area is getting a lot bigger. Thanks for taking us along.
The EPIC New-Video-Every-Week-Day Series continues. This is my favorite kind of video, the troubleshooting/diag videos. Although I also like the plain ol' maintenance ones. But this diagnostic ones have more of a story to them. I feel like I'm watching an episode of the old House (M.D.) TV show, except with cars instead of people. Solving puzzles is just fun.
Looks like all the smoke got let out of those wires there! The smoke-holding jacket was GONE. :D
I miss that hot front that came through a few days ago - hit 96° over here. I spent a couple years in Phoenix, so I feel right at home in the heat, so long as the dew point is a ways below 70°. I'm out there working in front of the barn with black pants and a black t-shirt, lol. Everyone stops and asks if I'm insane ... :D
46° out there now, and drizzling. Not happy about that! Life in the Northeast - whaddya gonna do ...
Big Nasty arrived the other day, along with my Ajax hammers! Thing is NUTS! The speed at which it hammers is alot slower ... but WOW does she pack a punch! THANKS for clueing us in on that gem - I'll be using that one alot around here. :)
Another day, another Eric O video. My god, you're on fire right now! I'll be sad when I don't get them daily 😂😭
Smokin'!.....
What a machine epic work as usual
simply the best on the tube. Gawwwd, why can't most techs be like this. diagnosis, diagnosis diagnosis. subscribed :)
Great diag Eric o. I totally agree about short testing tools.
A pair of pliers on the floor just when you need 'em, that never happens!
As always love to see proper method diagnostics
Many Thanks!
Smoke and a burn. Yup, you found it. Love you diagnostic theories. Thanks for sharing.
wiggle test, classic reach around but no brake clean.....Great video. Short, sweet and to the point.
Great vid. Watched your old vid (2013?) on a MoPar 2.7 water pump while trying to help my son. Big difference in videos from then to now Dr. O. Same quality content. Thank you.
Eric your awesome man I love how you go through the diagnosis to see what the issue is
HAHA nice diagnosis holy crap how did it run. WOW all bare and broken strands so that baby had to smoke check the insulation...guess that was your smoke. Only a CKP sensor that smoke checked they are lucky. When you said you were wiggling the O2 sensor & the fuel pump was kicking on I started laughing thinking this is different. Well I give kudos to that shop owner they realized their limitations and called you instead of throwing parts at it.
that was the best "well there's your problem lady" yet, lol
Good reach around Mr O. !!!
Eric O this is your best diag vid yet! I will use this method at work, thanks for the lesson sir!
Perfect example of a mechanic vs a technician right here.
Your awesome at finding the electronic malfunctions Eric. Hats off to ya my friend...
I click like before I see your video I know it going to be good!
u make it look easy!
playing away is not the surroundings is the knowledge you have that's pretty cool
Fantastic lessons in this one Mr. O. Thanks so much for sharing your valuable knowledge!
Well it was a quick easy one but still one we could learn from
Brilliant troubleshooting in this video! Cars today rely heavily on advanced buses that are not as easy to troubleshoot as generations before.
Thanks for this video!
they sure do. A lot of networking in cars today
wow Eric, you've been shooting out videos faster than the 30 mm gatling on an A10...BRRRRPPP.. another vid...love it
I had the same problem truck kept going into limp mode. Shop refused to look at it without a code. Finally thru a code and I fixed it, great video.
Hey Eric, after watching you use your Astro SL40 light every day and how well it appears to perform for you I sprung for one. I'm sure its the most I've ever spent for a small work light but with its features, your comments and the amount of light it puts out, I figured it would be worth it for my old eyes. Got it today and although I wish it was US made, at least it's Taiwan made and not China. It is every bit the quality piece I was expecting and plenty of light for even the "old classic reacharound."
... and all that without using even a toot of brake cleaner! Nice work!
lol can't give a toot in every vid!
Another "back to basics" solution. This gives me confidence since I only have basic electrical skills and tools.
( I hope you read this) I've been a new subscriber now for about 2 weeks, I've responded a few times on a few videos. Last night (1-21-2018) I put my 9 year daughter to bed at 8pm, well I checked on her (like I do ever night at 8:30) I see that she's under the covers watching you and your family on RUclips. She loves your puppies and likes you working on cars. She is with me on the weekends if I'm not keeping my home town safe (I'm a police officer) working on airplanes as I'm an A&P IA Airframe and PowerPlant mechanic inspection authorization. Keep the videos coming Mr. O I'm learning alot and so is my daughter lol
Awww how cute :) She may like this one then :) ruclips.net/video/pNENmVr9ljg/видео.html&t or this one : ruclips.net/video/WgW-qYiaq30/видео.html
South Main Auto Repair caught my daughter last night watching those videos when she should have been sleeping and getting ready for school!! AWESOME family video Mr. O!!
Good find and very logical approach to the issue.
Thanks man
that classic reach around seems to come in handy quite a bit, lol, great video as always, have a good one mr o.
all that stuff disconnected, and they didn't see bare copper? Questionable methods on their part. Great diag Eric O
Well we all have our days
True, sometimes so easy miss the obvious. usual cause is poor working practice when looking for faults or time restraints and jumping to conclusions rather than spending time on visuals & getting data .
Looks like the whole shop was a giant toolbox lol, so handy having tools lying on floor right next to you lol ...
Did make that one look too easy though . Would assume your 10amp breaker bit more resilient than real fuse looking at those spikes .
Was it bare before the use of the Snap On 10 amp breaker that doesn't open at twice it's rated value. It's like an old school method of bypassing the fuse and watching for the smoke. We used to call it Lucas diagnostics.
Well you know after staring at a project you go blind to things, and so they just was to busy looking at everything else
Great video Eric! Nice job finding that in short order.(I honestly didn't notice that pun till I re-read it) As you said, an accurate wiring diagram is key as well as the right tools......some experience doesn't hurt lol. keep up the good work - a lot can be learned on your channel! I enjoy electrical - but without the proper info./resources/tools - its like shooting in the dark. That was an extremely quick diagnosis.
Well some days we get lucky :D
Ever find yourself moving your head around trying to see around brackets and what not while you're watching the video? I hate that. Awesome video though!
That and trying to move the cursor on their laptop...
I find myself seeing a missed problem, and want to comment about it, so they can go back and look at it! But, by the end of the video, it's been fixed, the parts are (somehow) replaced, and the thing I thought I saw was just water (or something) glistening in the over head lighting!
2:35 . theres that dreaded doorbell. follows him everywhere like a ghost
you are freaking amazing Eric!!!!
im learning alot from you. Thanks for that.
Love these videos! Keep up the great work!
Cool video brother. The wiggle test is a lifesaver sometimes.
I'd like to think if you can do it, I can do it but you're being way too modest! Clearly, you can do it but some other mechanics can't even do it haha you're the best!
Niamh Healy yeah working with having Wiring Diagrams, makes troubleshooting a bit easy. Workshop owner neglected this obvious point to see but it happens sometimes.
Thank you Eric O
flat rate work most likely, jam fuses in, look for smoke, sparks or melting and replace that part is what most do :)
He's right though. If he can do it, you can do it. You just need to have the data on hand. If you can't find that data for free, then you are stuck at an obstacle. You can get over the obstacle by paying money for the data of course and knowledge is power.
Basically, you can both do it but Mr.O Has the power in his "pocket" (laptop) and that's what makes it so quick and easy for him.
Technically (for this job) he didn't need any fancy tools. Just a wiring diagram and following the wires. It's not always that obvious but you still CAN find the problem with enough time on your hand.
So in the end, you can both do it but Eric can do it faster, at the expense of having to pay a subscription to various vehicle databases.
You're so SMART...South Main Auto Repair Technician.
The "road treatments" cause all this mess! Couple that with the engine's heat, its a recipe for disaster! Just a matter of time.
Finding the problem is worse part, but Mr. O is GOOD at what he does, even in "the field." Thank you for this one.
Badass video Eric. I have noticed watching your videos that being an automotive technician is very similar to being an emergency medical technician. If you ever want to get a taste of what I do I'm very certain you would be a great asset. Keep up the great work.
No way man you have to save lives... I just fix junk haha
Eric thank you so much for sharing your method of finding short to ground with us. This was very informative and useful case study. Cheers.
Good one Eric, As always.
keep the videos coming eric!
In my area, this kind of problem should take days or the problem would never be solved ( if it was no bare wire ) Eric you would find this problem even if there was no copper exposed.
The truth is that these guys are not bad but ordinary mechanics and you Eric is a professional with skills way above an ordinary mechanic. I have noticed that some people that have fewer skills than you have 2 million subscribers but you are on your way there and I hope you get there fast.
People help yourself and become a paetron to SMA channel.................
Power is nothing without control! Good catch, I'm sure that other shop was going insane over that, critters or failure?
You are awesome. Had the exact same issue for an elderly friend and it was the same crank sensor deteriorated wire harness
Thousands of heat cycles from the exhaust manifold broke down that insulation on the crank sensor wiring. Very common problem on the GM 3.1L engine from the early 90's except the crank sensor wiring is on the rear of the engine underneath the exhaust manifold.
Those and the old GM 2.2's with the combo coil pack/IGN module/crank sensor on the backside of the engine under the intake
TrakSpock1 Let's beam down captain.
When one gets a low 'Whoa' and or 'Oh!' from Eric midway through the video, one guesses that he has the problem's rough location. Wow this guy is fast, for some one more thorough than lucky.
When he tossed the pliers back on the floor😂😂😂
There's your problem lady, you've been doin it raw dawg.
Nice diagnostic. You are good my friend
A friend would say "I'd rather be lucky than good" but Eric is lucky and good.
havnt watched one sma video without a good laff yet, phone rang there goes a subscriber, and there's your problem lady, always a good laff
Well done, Eric......AGAIN!
Good wire trace Eric O. That crank sensor cable was toast for sure.
Nice quick diagnosis, I hope you charged extra for the blisters! The only time I've had good results with the short finding buzz box is on trailers and buses in long runs where everything is lathered in undercoating, under hood's some luck under dashs useless but a good tool to have at times.
You really are Dr. O. Great work detective!
no sir, just get lucky now and then
Man .....You are absolutely the BEST ....!!!
More patience than a saint ....!! They should show your videos in auto tech schools .... Nothing like working the problem from different angles...
I would definitely drive my car from Scenic Scranton Pa .... for you to repair it .... !!!
Would be a Long ride in Limp Mode ....Lol.... 😁
Great job again like always my friend
Great video lots of good tips for me that’s the hardest thing to do trouble shooting electrical work you bad ass
You rock bud makeing house calls like a real auto dr. Lol.
Nice diagnostic - very logical process and fast result. @11:35, pop goes the weasel. I blame mice.
Just noticed you're at 80K subs! That hundy is creeping along.
Very nicely done Eric :)
Thanks Alan
I checked this video for the speed sensor fuse. Seems you have identified it for me! I think you for that.
I learn a lot from your videos..
So ... Is his a new "business venture" ? "Dr.O on the road" ?
Good job !
No video is complete without the classic "there's your problem lady" comment.😁👍
And brake cleaner!
love your videos I am a professional mechanic been doing it for 17 years specializing in German cars and I still learn from your videos great information thank you
Very well done sir.
