  • The Australian High Commission has stepped up security measures after riots and looting broke out in Papua New Guinea.
“People seem to have done a pretty good job at cleaning up the looting and the rioting of yesterday,” Sky News reporter Cheng Lei said.
“But still, there is underlying tension in the air.
“This violence was very, very tragic and very, very unexpected.
“It is quite tragic that we have seen the violence of the past day and it’s going to be a blow to the cost of living which citizens here are already suffering under.”

Unexpected???!!! Anyone who has spent any time in Port Moresby as I have, would know the place is a friggin' pressure cooker of lawlessness, poverty and extreme danger. That the place is not equal to a war zone is the miraculous part!!

Been there, done that. Expect the unexpected.
A colleague of mine provided security at the Australian High Commission many years ago and was cut up with machetes at the main gate.
Came home in a wheelchair and never mentally recovered. Got lots of horror stories from Zombie-land.
      The rascals reign supreme.

Canada greets you; yeh, a 100 pay grab doesn't cause a full blown riot with deaths. A lot of underlying and OBVIOUS factors were and are at play here, and it doens't help that most Aust. media cuts off comments, like Canada's tax supported CBC. What are they afraid of?? This riot looks exactly like south Chicago, St Louis, Compton, and Houston. Entitlement WITHOUT responsibility and eventually you get THIS. Zero surprise.

Showing primitive behavior, won't engage in dialogue before rioting, looting and violence, no respect for the struggling businesses that they are destroying. They demand and they take for themselves that which others earn. There are so many other instances of this type scenario all around the world, too. It's such a shame. Will we ever see civilization peaceful and content with living together?

I hate to break it to people, but this is exactly what would happened if Australian Aboriginals were given access to a functioning economy/country and working infrastructure.
Some people are just not meant for modern society. We have to be realistic about these things and truly honest.

Actually there's one group of PNG people called Highlanders that are pretty much responsible for all of this rioting. PNG has over 800 Languages & we'll over 1000 different tribes, not all are like these savage primitive Highlanders.

Everything could have easily been avoided had the Police done their "JOB" and that is to maintain Law and order, defuse the looting.. It's because they were also involved hence the situation got out of control...My neighbors boyfriend is a police officer and he brought home some of the drinks he looted, wanted to give the can drinks to my two children and I told them to keep them..
Very embarrassing and a disgrace to the society. Shame on Port Moresby Police, as if they were the only public servants affected by the word of the week "Glitch"🙄.

The government must take responsibility for the current turmoil. Globe trotting whilst the economy was declining due to global conflicts has caused inflation to escalate. There was never a serious attempt to harness the inflation issues. Too much of lip service and no effective intervention.

This riots/chaos initiated due to claim in increase in personal income tax while price of goods and services have increased by 100+%.
The minimum wage in PNG is K3.50 (equivalent to $1) per hour. While the cost of living in Papua New Guinea is very high compared to income. Just imagine being paid that low to meet other basic expenses at a high cost.
Citizens have been suppressed for too long to express and exercise their rights in this so called democratic nation.

This is the result of the government and the World treating us citizens of this rich oil and gas producing country as cheap human beings on the entire planet. How can this be while all other rich oil and gas producing countries enjoy higher affluent richer living standards, with higher wage and salaries for its public servant's while we in PNG are living in poverty. Revolution is the way forward for us.
