- The Australian High Commission has stepped up security measures after riots and looting broke out in Papua New Guinea.
“People seem to have done a pretty good job at cleaning up the looting and the rioting of yesterday,” Sky News reporter Cheng Lei said.
“But still, there is underlying tension in the air.
“This violence was very, very tragic and very, very unexpected.
“It is quite tragic that we have seen the violence of the past day and it’s going to be a blow to the cost of living which citizens here are already suffering under.”
Unexpected???!!! Anyone who has spent any time in Port Moresby as I have, would know the place is a friggin' pressure cooker of lawlessness, poverty and extreme danger. That the place is not equal to a war zone is the miraculous part!!
Mom and Dad live in PNG. The scope of what happened was rather expected.
Meanwhile in the Highlands, it's open warfare and basically a no-go zone.
Damm right this is such dishonest nonsense this tourist is attempting to feed the world
Been there, done that. Expect the unexpected.
A colleague of mine provided security at the Australian High Commission many years ago and was cut up with machetes at the main gate.
Came home in a wheelchair and never mentally recovered. Got lots of horror stories from Zombie-land.
The rascals reign supreme.
Canada greets you; yeh, a 100 pay grab doesn't cause a full blown riot with deaths. A lot of underlying and OBVIOUS factors were and are at play here, and it doens't help that most Aust. media cuts off comments, like Canada's tax supported CBC. What are they afraid of?? This riot looks exactly like south Chicago, St Louis, Compton, and Houston. Entitlement WITHOUT responsibility and eventually you get THIS. Zero surprise.
Showing primitive behavior, won't engage in dialogue before rioting, looting and violence, no respect for the struggling businesses that they are destroying. They demand and they take for themselves that which others earn. There are so many other instances of this type scenario all around the world, too. It's such a shame. Will we ever see civilization peaceful and content with living together?
Never
Nah.
This is the dream country for warrior independence in west Papua
Taek lo jawa..😅😅
Riots in png. How unusual.
The human condition is endemic.
Stay safe everyone wherever you are.
Globally everyone is going through something extreme, or bracing themselves for something.
Again stay safe wherever you are.
Good Health and Blessings.
☮️💟
Waiting it out in Pom.
Well wishes to those in Queensland affected by floods currently.

Expect the unexpected in the land of the unexpected
And what exactly are they protesting for? A whole news piece, and what exactly was the update about?
Civil servants ( including police) were paid $120 less a fortnight due to a glitch in pays from the Finance Department so that gave everyone the green light to burn and loot.
"very unexpected" - haha, i laughed... riots "unexpected" on an island where YOU were the main course just a century ago
It speaks volumes when even the Japanese were terrified of becoming the lunch menu
100 years ago?? WOW...get a grip you f*cking loser these people have done it to themselves. They go & burn down the shops but won't even go after the politicians who have robbed the country blind since its independence.
Australia has succeeded in educating them 🥸
Everything could have easily been avoided had the Police done their "JOB" and that is to maintain Law and order, defuse the looting.. It's because they were also involved hence the situation got out of control...My neighbors boyfriend is a police officer and he brought home some of the drinks he looted, wanted to give the can drinks to my two children and I told them to keep them..
Very embarrassing and a disgrace to the society. Shame on Port Moresby Police, as if they were the only public servants affected by the word of the week "Glitch"🙄.
Casualties got what they had coming. Choices & Consequences is all.!!
I hate to break it to people, but this is exactly what would happened if Australian Aboriginals were given access to a functioning economy/country and working infrastructure.
Some people are just not meant for modern society. We have to be realistic about these things and truly honest.
Actually there's one group of PNG people called Highlanders that are pretty much responsible for all of this rioting. PNG has over 800 Languages & we'll over 1000 different tribes, not all are like these savage primitive Highlanders.
Absolutely true , da low IQ don’t take much to get cited.😂😂
@@ronaldronz4599 yeah ,dat be a problem for evolution.😊
@@ronaldronz4599alright let me real lots of goilala niggas we’re at gerehu and waigani and lots of hanuabada people we’re at the koni
@chloeew4627 these Highlanders have been in power too for the last 15-20yrs..hence the mess that country is in
I fucking hate living in this country 💀
Where's the Australian Police? Didnt they so eager to signed up the security treaty with PNG last year by pushing the Chinese away? This is show time and show the world what big brother can do. The Chinese is eagerly watching.
Primitive in the DNA is too strong
Em ba u tok eh
The government must take responsibility for the current turmoil. Globe trotting whilst the economy was declining due to global conflicts has caused inflation to escalate. There was never a serious attempt to harness the inflation issues. Too much of lip service and no effective intervention.
HANDSOME BOY will come to the re$cue , cheque book in hand.
China
90% urban dwellers live under the poverty line.Even salaried and wage earners are taxed right back into the poor class. If a population living on the edge,a glitch can tip them over into anarchy.
Nothing new in PNG!!
Well it’s just lucky the Australian tax payer is giving them $600 million for a rugby team…. Wonder how much more we are going to need to give them now.
Australia and China's money not trickling down to the bottom level.
These entities have nothing to do with this and this showed how weak we are to face the government of the day.
Australia should just leave them be and sort themselves out.
And ensure they don’t get on boats...
Is Cheng Lei "reporting" or oversharing details of her personal life nobody cares to hear about?
Taxes imposed are 35% to 40% depending on Salary range. We need the government to reduce these tax rates.
To the GLOBAL COMMUNITY: THIS IS A REFLECTION OF CAPITALIST GOVERNANCE SPANNING OVER 43 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE with TOTAL NEGLIGENCE OF DOMESTIC POLICY/NEGLIGENCE OF UPDATED EDUCATIONAL REFORM. LET THIS UPHEAVAL BE THE CATALYST FOR THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT TO IMPLEMENT MUCH NEEDED SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY FOR REPARATION.

😂 shut up you idiot
The most biased reporting in the world! The reporter's PERSONAL experience is NOT a gauge for a NATIONAL problem!!
My other half’s uncle lived behind high fences topped by barbed wire back in the 1980s
surprise, its still the same
i never even heard of this African country
What the capital city(Port Moresby)needs is the vagrancy act, and abolishing of settlements in the city that's the solution, currently there's too many unnecessary unemployed people living in the capital city....SMDH
As PNG is a neighbouring country i am concerned about the indigenous people there being slaughtered by foreigners to gain access to the land which the media is reluctant to report on.
Forgot the Race Baiting attempt ...
They are killing themselves. Every effort has been done to improve these people's lives and they just aren't up to the task.
you are right, indonesia is certainly guilty of a genocide
There's one group on PNG people called the Highlanders that are pretty much responsible for all of this rioting in Port Moresby
Free West Papua
Riots¿ This is because group of low impulse people can't control themselves. Mainly because they seek bling without paying.
So Albosleazy urges calm - another strong worded letter no doubt
I am very surprised by a lot of racist comments here.
PNG*LM
This riots/chaos initiated due to claim in increase in personal income tax while price of goods and services have increased by 100+%.
The minimum wage in PNG is K3.50 (equivalent to $1) per hour. While the cost of living in Papua New Guinea is very high compared to income. Just imagine being paid that low to meet other basic expenses at a high cost.
Citizens have been suppressed for too long to express and exercise their rights in this so called democratic nation.
The poor people of png has the right to defend themselves. Esp from colonist.
Defend themselves? From whom? From the businesses/ investors who will make their economy and country better?
The RASCALS run the show in PNG…
Does melanin cause looting?
Pissy Chrissy didn't the vote glad
Bye bye nrl team
This is the result of the government and the World treating us citizens of this rich oil and gas producing country as cheap human beings on the entire planet. How can this be while all other rich oil and gas producing countries enjoy higher affluent richer living standards, with higher wage and salaries for its public servant's while we in PNG are living in poverty. Revolution is the way forward for us.
For a minute I thought you were talking about Australia
