  • In this video i explain the steps in changing the oil, oil filter, and how to reset the maintenance light on 2016-2020 3.5 Liter V6 Tacoma. My specific model is a 2018. Per Toyota these trucks require 6 liters of 0W-20 oil. I show you how the filter is also in a housing where the actual filter medium gets replaced and how now the filter kit comes with a drain plug. After replacing the oil and filter I then show you how to reset the oil maintenance light in a few easy steps. This whole DIY process should take you no longer then 30 minutes start to finish to get your Tacoma back on the road.

Mazel Tov! A very well done How-To video! Good format/outline, very good and clear presentation without the annoying yatzha bumper music! I have had 2 Toyota P/U's both 4 cyl.'s, used the Toyota Brand filters because the timing chain was oil pressure regulated, assuming the same design with the V6 3.5L...besides the Toyota Filter is cheaper!

    New crush washer?
40 N•m torque on oil pan drainplug.
The plastic piece that comes with the oil filter is not a drainplug. Most call it a drain tool. Toyota refers to it as a service pipe in the directions that come with an OEM oil filter.
The best recommended oil filter cap wrench for this application is the Motivx MX2320 seen here... www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-Toyota-Filter-Engines/dp/B00XTAGHU0/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Motivx+2320&qid=1599683962&sr=8-2
For those who have a torque wrench...
Torque oil filter cap to 25 N•m
Torque oil filter cap drainbolt to 12.5 N•m
Following these specs will assure that next time you change your oil you will be able to removed the drainbolt on the filter without the entire oil filter cap coming off.
You also need to start the engine & let it run a bit before checking your dip-stick one last time (check for leaks while it's running).
All in all, a good job. It gets easier each time you do it.
I don't know how often you change your oil but we do ours every 5,000 miles. Your using a 20,000 mile filter so if you did it every 5,000 miles you could skip changing the filter every other oil change. That might save you from removing the skid plate for every oil change, which I think is the worse part of the job.
