I do end up in Hawaii a lot. Hawaii content does well on the channel, and I like to use HNL as a break when flying across the Pacific. I'd fly all the way across at one time, but YT only allows 12 hours to be uploaded at a time, so I try to take flights that are at max 10 hours so I don't have to worry about the upload limit.
I have flown a number of times from HNL to SFO and each time my flight passed much closer to Honolulu than your flight. Been a number of years though since I have done this leg so has the departure route changed a bit?
It just depends on the day and the crew. Sometimes you get much closer than others and I've had much closer departures recently, so they do still do it.
