- This video shows every monarch of England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom!
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch shares power with a constitutionally organized government. The reigning king or queen is the country’s head of state. All political power rests with the prime minister (the head of government) and the cabinet, and the monarch must act on their advice.

@Figure RUclips, the dates listed under each monarch is not how long they lived, but the number of years that they ruled.
In Britain, this usually means that the last date is the date they died of natural causes, were killed on the battlefield, executed (Charles I ) murdered in their sleep etc.
In former times, it was a dangerous business to be the king, there were plenty who wanted your throne, hence the expression in English “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.
All throughout history monarchs had to contend with assassination plots, coup attempts and internal wars usually from members of the nobility or even close family members.
When Edward IV died, his young son became king under the name Edward V. However, instead of protecting his nephew, Edward IVs younger brother, Richard the III locked up the young king Edward and his little brother in the Tower from where they vanished, most likely killed. Today, they are known as the Princes in the Tower.
Henry VIII was pretty paranoid about anyone plotting against him. He had good reason to be. His own father Henry VII had plotted against the former king stealing his throne from him.
Henry VIII was a good king in his younger years, but became a cruel despot as he got older. No one was safe around him, least his six wives, two who ended up with their heads cut off. It’s been estimated that as many as 70,000 people were killed during Henry’s reign, many on direct or indirect orders by the king himself.
All three of his legitimate kids ruled for a period of time (Edward VI, Mary and Elisabeth I).
Elisabeth I ruled for many years. There were many assassination plots against her, but she was very wise, and had good advisors. Her life was in danger several times, even before she became Queen.
Even Queen Victoria was faced with assassination plots and coup attempts, especially in her early years as queen regent.
Today, the chances of assassinations and coup attempts against European constitutional monarchs in order to gain the power of kingship, is not very likely.
Prime ministers face a much bigger threat of being “taken out” by a disgruntled member of an opposing party. However, there is always the threat of terrorists and madmen who want to kill members of royal families, but their motives for doing so have nothing to do with any desire to become the king themselves.
The biggest threat to a ruling monarch today is the behaviour and antics either by him or herself and that ruler’s family members. A constitutional monarch is only a monarch as long as the populace in a that democracy wish them to remain on the throne.
Greece is a good example. In 1967, King Constantine II and his young family had to flee Greece due to a military coup by the generals.
After a brutal reign, the military slithered back to their barracks, and Greece became a democracy. However, years later, in a public referendum a majority of the people of Greece voted to abolish the monarchy.
For many years, the king and his family were not allowed to come to Greece, but after a few short visits to Greece by them, the Greek government realized that there was no threat of the king attempting to take back his crown, and he spent the last years of his life in Greece, recently peacefully passing away.
Today, King Charles III and his descendants will only lose the crown, if the British public were to vote them out. However, constitutional monarchies are not a bad thing. A monarchy represents continuity and stability. The monarch is the Head of State, dealing mostly with ceremonial stuff such as state visits. The monarch usually keeps him or herself above the fray of party politics. A monarchy also adds a certain amount of glamour to a country, generating plenty of interest from people from other countries without a monarchy.
Pretty much everyone around the world knows Charles III is the King of Great Britain and several Commonwealth countries, but how many people know the name of the president of France or Germany?
Countries without monarchies have to their surprise found that it wasn’t enough just to have a ruling prime minister. They needed someone who could do all the ceremonial stuff and function as Head of State, as the prime minister is too busy running the country.
Until 1944, Iceland was ruled from Denmark. The Head of State for Iceland was Danish king Christian X. In 1944, Iceland claimed its independence unilaterally from Denmark. There wasn’t much Denmark could do about this at the time. Denmark was occupied and ruled by Nazi Germany. There was no legitimate Danish government in place at the time. After the war, Denmark accepted the status quo, but Christian X allegedly was not happy about the outcome.
Iceland has set several global milestones when it comes to the equality of men and women. Iceland became the first country in the world to elect a woman as president when Vigdis Finnbogadottir became the president of the independent republic of Iceland in 1980. She served for three consecutive terms, 16 years in all as was a most popular president.
@Not Pewdiepie yea it’s counting by their reigns
George v1 is correct he died in February 1952 I was at primary school then.
The Queen was crowned in 1953.
I can't believe how many of the people who commented didn't realize that the dates listed were for the dates that the monarch *reigned* and not the years they *were born* and *died* . Isn't it blindingly obvious when each monarch's begin date is the same year as the previous one's end date?
I knew it was their time on the throne.

@@wendyjacques9366 I commend you for going to all the trouble you did to compile this list, but there are a few errors.
The current monarch is Charles III, not Charles II.
Jane Grey is not considered to have been a monarch as she was never crowned and the majority of the English nobles considered her claim to the throne as invalid. If you put her on the list then you would have to add Matilda, the daughter of Henry I who named her his heir. Either both should appear on the list or neither.
In cases where there was only one monarch of a given name, he or she is not the first of that name until another monarch comes along by that name, So Queen Anne is just Anne, not Anne I. King Stephen is Stephen, not Stephen I.
William III was joint ruler of England with Queen Mary II - she was a queen regnant, not a queen consort.
Oliver and Richard Cromwell were rulers but not monarchs. They didn't consider themselves monarchs and no one else did either.
Finally, the opinions of most historians is that no monarch prior to Æthelstan could be considered the monarch of England since there was no such kingdom until Æthelstan united the separate kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia. The kings before him were called King of the Anglo-Saxons, not kings of England.

Edward V was never crowned, but he is still counted. Some listings do not include Jane Grey because of the circumstances around her accession.

I noticed that queens had the longest reigns, uk has a great history😌, from one the oldest kingdoms, the kingdom of Morocco🇲🇦👑
The 3rd longest reign was that of a man- George III
In 1917, the name of the British royal house was changed from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the English Windsor because of anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom during the First World War.
... and King Charles III - House of Oldenburg!
And Battenberg was changed to Mountbatten.
Which is not changing anything that they are more German then British, lol.
And the most funny thing is that in country where no Brits left, name is still remaining the same.
@@templarknight8004 They were never more than half German, as George I's mother Sophia was the granddaughter of James VI of Scotland and James I of England. Being raised in Hanover he didn't speak English, but Queen Elizabeth II' s mother was Scottish and both Diana and Catherine are English, so the British blood is prevalent in the Royal family of today.

Missing:Jane Grey, The “Nine Day Queen” and Henry the Young King (28 February 1155 - 11 June 1183) was the eldest son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine to survive childhood. Beginning in 1170, he was titular King of England, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou and Maine. Henry the Young King was the only English king since the Norman Conquest to be crowned during his father's reign, but was frustrated by his father's refusal to grant him meaningful autonomous power.[1][2] He died, aged 28, six years before his father, leaving his brother Richard to become the next king.
Also Queen Matilda is missing
This is a very poorly put-together line of succession. It is in error all over the place. Frankly, this should be taken down.
Jane Grey does not count, she was a usurper.

I'm amazed to see the starting of monarch from 8th century AD which makes it very recent in history for me. I myself come from the place where we have kingdom from 8th century BC or early.
9th Century actually, 800s = 9th century just as we are in the 21st century now. As for earlier history England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland didn't exist as nations, there were kings, queens and leaders of various tribes that controlled certain areas but even post Roman occupation for first few centuries what is now England for example was not a country unified under one monarch.

Yes, that would be very interesting! As an Englishman who spends a lot of time in Scotland, I've enjoyed National Portrait Gallery and Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, and would like to see the Scottish kings laid out in a timeline.
Thanks for this, it’s a good list 👍🏻 but a couple of wee things:
James I should be James VI and I, King of Scotland and England. He was the sixth King James of Scotland long before he became the first King James of England as well.
As others have pointed out, you missed Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England & Ireland between Edward VI and Mary I (albeit for nine whole days, the poor cow).

this list also decided to leave out a lot of nicknames also it said that Oliver cromwell’s house was called commonwealth 😅
Hi, just wanted to say that Queen/Empress Matilda is missing (daughter of King Henry I and mother of King Henry II) I understand that she could be missing due to the fact that she kept "fighting" over the throne with King Stephen, but King Henry I did name her his heir to the throne.
Also Queen/Lady Jane Grey is missing, I can also understand this as she was only queen for nine days, but King Edward VI did name her successor.
Both persons are not officially recognised as Sovereigns. Matilda gave up her right on the agreement that Henry Plantagenet would become King after King Stephen. Lady Jane Grey was never officially declared Queen Regnant through the Accession Council, even though she was legally the heir.
@@ds1868 The accession council thing is purely ceremonial. The heir apparent/presumptive becomes the monarch the second the former monarch passes away.

Excellent lineup. How about doing one of the kings and queens of Denmark?🇩🇰
That would be a dead bore! “Frederik, Christian, Frederik, Christian! Need I go on
One of the oldest European monarchies, together with the House of Orange (Netherlands).
There's definitely confusion about who was King of what here.
From 1199: King of England, Lord of Ireland.
From 1542: King/Queen of England and Ireland.
From 1603: King/Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland.
From 1707: King/Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.
From 1801: King/Queen of the United Kingdom.
(Most of Ireland became independent in 1922, but it's still the United Kingdom).
Good summary of the dates.
Why was Great Britain "downgraded" to the United Kingdom? Is it because Ireland isn't included?
@@visionist7 The opposite. Great Britain did not include Ireland. The UK did (and still includes Northern Ireland).
@@TheMoonRover thanks
Can you plz tell me with wich site or app you are making your Video ? Thank you
Muy interesante video
Americans, get the correct George VI picture, the one shown is George V, Victoria's Grandson.
There was no Great Britain before 1707, therefore there were no Kings or Queens of such a place. The Act of Union (in 1707 under Queen Anne) between Scotland and England, which combined the Scottish flag of St. Andrew with the English flag of St. George (forming the Union flag seen today) resulted in the creation of Great Britain.
Yes, the Sovereign wore three separate crowns. Also the Coronation of the King of Scots still took place at the Palace of Scone!
It was possible to be the King of 2 separate countries at the time, which is why it says King of England and Scotland and not King of the United Kingdom.
It was sussex wäre alles offen them want to rule eh ich is still here today.
U mean, after these ppl looted and destroyed the whole world spinelessly??
@@cloveriteHis point is the Kingdom of GB didn't exist until 1707; there were 3 separate Kingdoms prior to 1707. The UK was only formed in 1801.
You have the wrong portrait posted for George VI. You are showing a second portrait of George V. Otherwise, very well done!!
Super
Я на протяжении всего видео: смотрю на портреты королей и понимаю, как часто у них менялся нос, и какой отличительной особенностью стала форма глаз.
Your timeline shows the wrong photo of George VI.
The photo for George VI, ("Bertie", the former Prince Albert, Duke of York; father of Elizabeth II, grandfather of Charles III, and younger brother of Edward VIII), is missing from your timeline. The photo that is represented in error for George VI is obviously a photo of George V, husband of Mary of Teck, father of Edward VIII and George VI, grandfather of Elizabeth II, and great-grandfather of Charles III.
We know, we're wrong!
He said that in the pinned comment..
No need say it like that - they were just simply telling you that
@@DataSetsChannel so? why not make a correction!!!🤨🤨🤔🤔🤬🤬🤬😡

Between the Queen Elizabeth II and Charles III, I felt the gap was of two centuries 😂😂
I just now stopped dead at George VI to come read the comments to see if anyone else noticed it was wrong. Yep.
