Having heard the song a million times I’ve never even thought about those rhythmic stabs at the beginning being a little strange but it’s really noticeable now that you’ve mentioned it. I think they’re acting as sort of a pick up or anticipatory note to push the song and give it more of a driving feel. Funny thing is you hear this done a lot in the blues and the main riff in Tornado of Souls kind of borrows from the blues scale
Mustaine especially does this a lot in his rhythm playing, the blues scale. Thats what he learned as a kid...a lot of older generations of metal guitar players use it, because thats what was at its peak when they learned how to play.
I think the amount of times this song is played and how many times the solo is heard really blinds people from how genius the songwriting on this song actually is. I always found the beginning riff to be one of the most creative riffs ever written and there are so many other qwerks that fit the song perfectly. There are also a lot of bluesy parts, which tbh is classic megadeth but their style of blues is so recognizable its almost legendary. This will always be one of the greatest metal songs ever.
Awesome analysis - by the way, the "hiccup" effect of the pulse is EXACTLY the reason Enter Sandman is such a masterpiece of tight songcraft too. It's a way simpler song - but the drum intro is genius, and the song enters the main riff on the last 1/8th note. The main riff has an accent on the last 1/8th. And then the verse riff (say your prayers little one) is a chug - 7 E string chugs then an accent on the final 8th. And in the last part of the song where there's the famous (BOOM) surprise - AGAIN the riff comes back on the last 1/8th of a measure. It's a simple trick but this is a major factor in what makes the song work!
I first heard this song in 1996....however, it took your video to make me realize that this song literally "sounds" like a sonic tornado. Great video Chris
i really love your megadeth deep dives. i also think (probably like many other) the first 3 albums would not be AS interesting as deep diving songs on rust in peace but deep dives on songs like mary jane, the skull beneath the skin or devils island, the conjuring etc. yeah. they are interesting. (or just any opeth lol)
Great vid man! You gotta love this song. However, it sounds to my ears that the backing vocals on this song were in fact Dave Mustaine but idk I could be wrong.
Wonderful song! Great melody and interesting and relatable story made me translate it into my native language, so more of my friends would know what the song is about, not just appreciate the cool sound. During the process of translation I completely understood the inner plot, can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Fucking love this song. I really hope I can have the ability the play that guitar solo eventually. Also, I personally see the song as about drug use and the rockstar lifestyle getting in the way of his relationships, including his relationship with his woman.
Tornado is a perfect blend of aggression, thrash, rage and anger blessed with the only guitar solo blessed by the divine It’s lightning in a bottle I really wish Dave had continued down the Rust rabbit hole on future projects because he got fucked on Countdown (Metallica won the Grammy because they lost to Jethro Tull) and while I enjoy all of their albums they lack the drive of the 80s with a few exceptions (Cryptic has some songs that absolutely hit me where I need it) Now I’ll argue all day long that I’ll take ANY Megadeth album over any post Justice album by Metallica. That’s right I said Risk is better than the black album, about on equal footing with me if I’m honest. This song is literally an emotional tornado with the band aynced perfectly Ask ANY Metal fan the perfect Megadeth song You get handed Tornado
Tornado of Souls and actually the whole RIP is getting as close to progressive as I could probably get into. It’s crazy the riffs and transitions it has so much going on but nothing feels jammed into it just because it’s a difficult variation of the other riff , the songs aren’t too long, like And Justice for All , RIP is just right is what I’m trying to say, but I’m one of those weirdo’s who likes Countdown better and I think SFSGSW is better than Peace Sells, so what do I know ? Addiction is the ultimate toxic relationship and the fact that it’s a one sided relationship requiring eventually everything from the addict and returning more and worsening problems, the addict knows this and keeps dancing with their DOC or whatever substitute they can find. When I first got sober, it was like loosing my best friend and lover and at those times all I could remember were the good times and not so much the fact that I was completely hopeless and miserable the last 8-10 years of it, but all of the sudden a great big part of your life is missing, but yeah for me at least it was exactly like a bad relationship theirs not a much difference in the anxiety and depression I felt, my life was supposed to be super great since I got sober but it wasn’t like that at all either the problems I had that led me to addiction were still there or my years of self abuse created new ones it doesn’t matter because then you gotta figure out how to deal with them, I don’t miss it any more but it took a long time to get to that point.

these kind of "yeah, the drums is actually weird" is what makes Megadeth unique. Dave is kind of a "good version of a musical Joker" in some way

You are totally right! VERY Cool never noticed that!
I think the brief moment of dissonance you mention in the chorus could be explained away as a passing tone

Right?! It’s like you hear the wind howling.

Super interesting and very in-depth analysis. It really shows these guys' amazing songwriting skills. Great work!
