    The whole freakin' purpose of grading is so that you have a clear idea of condition of a book. Now that information is going to be hidden behind a paywall?! This is a horrible move.

      Subscription based paywall to boot. Yeah, like I want to pay for a service to look up (by punching in a 12-14 digit code… not a QR scan and go code) each time I’m considering buying a graded book? Not likely.
      Don’t think sellers will get off easy either, I’m going to ask for the notes and if you don’t have readily available, I’ll just shop elsewhere. so, it’s going to cost you time and effort to produce/provide this info (i.e. print it out and attach) to every book you want to sell. Bad for the community all-around IMHO. Oh well, the rich get richer and the schmucks just get a sticker (and a plastic slab)… unless they pay $25 a year and hand over their identity to these f’rs.

      @timreierson26 2 года назад

    • @jacobfinnegan771
      @jacobfinnegan771 2 года назад

      I would think the defects are inherent to the grade. One collector may value a set of defects differently than another, but a CGC 4.5 is a CGC 4.5, and you can get an FMV on that 4.5 from GoCollect or GPA. I doubt novice buyers are looking to crack and upgrade, but if they are, anyone looking to do so should already be pulling up the graders notes. And, if as a collector there's certain defects you won't buy, then you should already be looking at graders notes, especially for books Fine + and below.
      I dont think this was about big sellers or really any member of the community outside of those with ownership interest in CGC. This was about putting more behind the pay wall to milk out more money from the crack and improve crowd and the fairly sizeable portion of the collector community that is picky regarding what they would and wouldn't buy.

    $25 bucks a year for the lowest tier of membership on CGC. Then you could go the the "Resources" tab and go to the "Verify CGC certification," submit the number of the books and the low down will be shown. Not a high price to pay for information on a yearly basis if you only buy slabbed books from other owners. It is what it is folks. You can either go with it, ask the seller for all notes or choose another grader. Best to all.

    How people continue to patronize CGC is beyond me. So they won't list a missing panel or incomplete book on the label, but they'll continue to list "coverless" and stickers, both of which are usually obvious at first glance? So basically they hiked their prices, and are now scaling back what you get for those services on the final product-- which translates to another a non-monetary de facto price hike. Great business logic here... and yet people continue to support them. The biggest thing will be if you happen to buy a graded book on the secondary market, you can no longer be sure of what you're buying-- giving more leeway to an unscrupulous seller. CGC is selling its integrity to its major revenue sources! A terrible strategy. A label is there for one purpose - to provide information regarding the comic in the case. The credibility and trust of the broad comic collector community has been earned by CGC. That same award of trust can be withdrawn and replaced with skepticism and distrust. This initiative to eliminate important differentiating information about the sealed comic cheapens the value of their grading service and partnership with the collector base. A well run company with an interest in its customers preferences will admit its mistakes and withdraw this unwelcome initiative. CGC would demonstrate its role as a steward of comic grading integrity. This show of alignment and understanding with the community can actually further strengthen and deepen the same connection it would otherwise damage. What will CGC do?

    Hi Dave. Great work on this channel and I always look forward to each video. When it comes to the changes I look at it this way: When the book is graded the defects are reflected in the score. If I am showing a slabbed book to friends, family and others I do not want a label that lists everything wrong with the book. For example, the point to highlight is that I have that Key in a 2.5 and not to point out that it is missing a staple, etc. In a way it is reminiscent of the near mint, very fine, fine scoring system in that the grade provides the sense of the overall condition of the book. If I am buying or selling a book it is probably of enough value that I should do my due diligence and this does make that more difficult. But overall, the cleaner label works for me. Keep up the great work. Cheers.

    I think it’s a huge deal to say if the book is incomplete or not and whether it affects the story. I agree with you on the visual defects if they are there and you miss them then shame on you. However, the entire point of certification is to find out what is wrong with the book and how it impacts the grade. Why hide the most important pieces of that information? Who is asking for less critical information on a label? This is just another instance of a company putting their profit over the interests of the people they derive that profit from. It’s a shameless money grab.
    Thanks for getting this info out there!

    hey cgc, i didnt get as much as i wanted for my book because your label alerted my potential buyers to a defect on the book. why do you put it on the label when they can see it in the grader notes, it’s redundant. and if they don’t know to look or where to look, then too bad, they didn’t do their due diligence. but at least i can maximize my profit when selling these books that i paid you to grade. that’s your feedback from prominant members. i don’t think they are after the memberships.

    For sellers of slabbed comics: It is now incumbent upon you to include the grader notes with each sale. If you don't, one cannot possible know all the reasons why the comic was graded as it was. This is just a scam by Blackrock to make more money. It's obvious. Once Blackrock geniuses took a look at how to make greater efficiencies and more money from their new aquisition, it was an easy catch: "Hey let's make it so anyone who buys and sells graded comics, not just those who send comics to be graded, has to subscribe to CGC. That's a minimum of $25 for anyone who wants to really know why their comic has the grade it does." Response by management? "Make that guy a VP."

      If my competitor thought they were too big to fail, I would be shouting this from the rooftops and commercially gutting them with big price decreases and investment in expertise. It's a zero sum game and the market wants more from their graders. Give the people what they want and they will love you for it.

    Seems like a whack money-making scheme by CGC - if I owned an Amazing Fantasy 15 1.0 INCOMPLETE, then I'm now tempted to send it in AGAIN and receive the same label without "INCOMPLETE" and/or other negative words on the slab.
    CGC are going down hill IMO.
    All internal and spine defects SHOULD be noted on the slab.

      They'll still say "missing pages" if it's missing pages... the incomplete mention is repetitive... I don't think your example holds up.

    Good post. Three things. (1) Does CGC have data that more people want CGC to not include those items on the label than people who would like those descriptions to stay on the label? (2) Now that CGC is owned by Blackrock, it will only to continue to reduce aspects of the service while regularly raising costs. Why, there are many more "middle-men" now between the comic collector and the grading / slab service. Think what happened to healthcare costs after the creation of HMOs. We were told it would make healthcare cheaper. Stupid. No way adding more and more middle-men can make anything cheaper. (3) All this is designed to make more money because now EVERYONE will have to subscribe to CGC in order to get notes that are no longer on the label. In short: Greed. Dude, use your youtube to spread a call to insist that CGC retract this policy. As a general rule, the less information the worse for collectors.

    This is going to make it harder to justify spur of the moment decisions for auction bids, like when you see a cool book sitting a bit low. In those cases I usually rely on expanding the photo, looking over the books, and seeing if there are any slab notes.
    It isn't ideal, but not as bad as the restored books with the fancy designer labels that were blue.

Notwithstanding, I buy CGC books now and then and rely upon this type of disclosure in order to know exactly what I am buying. So as you say, it is nothing more than a money grab to force people like me to subscribe. Also, will there be a way for me to tell if a book was graded before or after this policy goes into effect? Will buyers like me now have to badger sellers to provide grading notes (partly because this a benefit to sellers?) It seems they are doing everything they can to help CBCS gain market share?
