  • The great HMV Leicester store has been trading for 33 years as of 2023. It was previously set over three floors but the upper floor is now closed off leaving the upper ground floor and lower ground floor. It is still a very impressive store and bigger than most. The upper ground is primarily for music CD's and vinyl records and the lower ground is home video with a few other items such as record decks, posters, tee-shirts, books and other collectibles. The video disc aisles are long and impressive so I tried to capture the 4K shelves and aisle in full for this video.
Also shown in this video is the video shot by Jbird1004 of the HMV Belfast store in Northern Ireland. The full video can be seen on JBird's channel here: • HMV BELFAST GROUND FLO...

Nothing like that here in Australia anymore. Did have HMV and Virgin Megastores here a long time ago. Beautiful store, thanks for filming. Just a bit jealous! But gladder that people get to enjoy such stores. We have stores that still sell physical, but their range is nothing like this. Love shopping in an actual store over Amazon or the like. A great experience to see the titles and buy them off the shelves.

I've certainly learned to appreciate HMV (and their offshoot stores known as FOPP) since starting this channel and that's because so many people started telling me they purchase everything from Amazon. I hope I've succeeded in changing that a little over here during the past few years. I never buy anything from Amazon as they do not have physical stores in our shopping centres and high streets. If that ever changes then they may see some of my custom but not until that day comes. I think the over population here in Britain crammed into such a tiny area does mean shops such as HMV have enough of a market left to sell to so the uncontrolled, mass-immigration here hasn't been all bad.
      John.

That's heartbreaking Robert. I think HMV have managed to survive over here (despite a couple of bankruptcies) because we've over crowded but a nation of film and music lovers. This means we're tightly packed enough for stores to still be viable because most big towns and cities have big populations on their doorsteps meaning there are still enough people to buy the products. In the Americas, it is so huge and disparate that operating anything other than an internet store can be a risky business. With Amazon seemingly taking over the world I think we're going through a bit of a worrying time. We'll all miss shops and shopping centres if they're all killed off. John.

Hello John, great video, certainly reminds me of times when there were stores like this all over the country.
My local HMV closed down, but a group of entrepreneurs opened the site up again, the store name being ‘Head’ (pronounced Heeeeead), with wall to wall Blu-ray, DVD and CD (4K was not mainstream yet). The staff were friendly and helpful, and it was usually packed. Apparently HMV got to know of the new success and repossessed the site and reopened again as HMV. As far as I know, none of the Head staff were retained. Unfortunately, the ‘new’ HMV has slowly moved over a lot of floor area to other merchandise (pop art stuff, etc), now there is only a very small 4k selection on one shelf near the pay counter…pitiful…
Good news that the Oxford Street store will be re-opening… great to visit again. Of course, I remember many a visit to the old HMV Mega-store (towards the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street), think it used to have 4 or 5 floors of physical media? Used to visit Stereo Regent Street and many of the Hi-Fi/AV shops on Tottenham Court Road regularly too. Bought my Eumig S940 in one of the London shops… Cheers.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Год назад +1

Your history is similar to mine Stephen but I lived right in the centre of London so I was around all the time. There was nowhere else like London for shopping back in the 1990's and early 2000's but then the congestion tax came in and quickly wiped out most of the specialist shops. Remember Tottenham Court Road being flooded with hifi shops at the southern end. Congestion tax and then web shopping some years later killed the lot. Nothing there at all now. Oxford Street is more or less the same as every other town centre so little point to make the effort now... but HMV re-opening will change that. I spent a lot of money in Stereo Regent Street and got to know them quite well when they moved to the smaller premises on Shaftesbury Avenue where I spent thousands on THX equipment, NTSC laser discs and region 1 DVD's. We'll never again see the variety of shops like there was then. John.

Since then it moved to a smaller yet nicer location near Covent Garden and it got a new name: Fop or something? I learned most HMV’s had changed to that but I obviously was wrong.

That store near Covent Garden was originally mainly a classical music retailer. It was taken over a while ago and became FOPP. I don't know if that was always a subsidiary name of HMV or whether they bought the small chain of FOPP stores out years ago but it was there at Cambridge Circus for many years while the two HMV megastores were on Oxford Street. And it's wonderful that HMV is about to return to the original location. Time for a celebration when that one re-opens. There will be a reason to shop on Oxford Street again.

@@moviecollector5920lp me please, checked Google but what was the congestion tax (for)? And why did it influence shopping and high streets in general?
To me since the mid 2000’s and the globalization going faster and faster things went down hill fast and our European cities start to lose their identity.
The high streets in for instance Amsterdam, Cologne, Antwerp etc. here are identical and virtually indistinguishable with their worldwide brands and no local or national retailers anymore.
And buying physical films in a store with an expert behind the counter becomes a thing of the past and maybe in general.
With the stupendous switch to all digital (like streaming services over physical product) we lose our heritage. 100 - 200 years from now we can’t tell what was typical for 2023 as there won’t be much left that defined this decade. But maybe for the better. As there is ‘t much worth preserving of these bleak times where BBC made Doctor Who black and gay (nothing against both, far from actually as my son is gay, but even he says “c’mon, wtf is this?”) and we are stuck with poorly scripted CGI crapfests instead of authetic film making.
Yet there is a glance of hope in 23 with the new Mission Impossible where Tom Cruise shows what true film making and adventures are like and ofcourse with, different genre, Oppenheimer!

After all, that's good business and while there is enough of a market for labels such as Arrow and Second Sight there will surely be major titles appearing from the studios who have thrown the towel in. It makes no sense not to generate income by selling discs while it's profitable. I have The Abyss on Super 8 and it's a very good print so that should indicate any 4K would be very good too. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Let's hope. Actually going into a real building to browse physical media in general has become a pretty depressing situation here in the last 10 years. There's nothing dedicated anymore. The only options are places like Newbury comics for music (which is a relatively small chain found in malls in the New England area) or the music and movie sections of the big box places like Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Target. Which in most scenarios is pretty pitiful now and unkempt most times. And you're only going to find major releases at places like those -- nothing in the boutique release space for sure. Which means that I keep my purchases online most times -- Amazon, DeepDiscount and the like. Sad. If I ever get out to the UK again, HMV will be one of my priorities.

@@ryanbaker7404 HMV is still growing again over here now so it's a great time to be able to shop in stores like this and imagine you're back in the 1990's. John.
