  • It was big news here in Britain when the original HMV store established in 1921 re-opened after a few years of being empty and then another retailer being in situ for another couple of years. Record sales on vinyl are once again the mainstay of HMV just as they were more than 100 years ago but with a complete floor of home video on the first floor this should be a destination for anyone heading to London so make a note of 363 Oxford Street, London W1. In addition we have the HMV subsidiary FOPP just along from Piccadilly Circus by Cambridge Circus so there are two good reasons to head into central London now.
    The Unbox Fox has just visited both this original branch of HMV and also FOPP so take a look at his massive haul here: • London 4K and Blu-ray ...

      That so true HMV was my go to shop in the late 80's when i whet up london as we haven't got these type of big stores of proper collections of media films and content. Now i use internet its isnt the same but you do get better deals and browsing around is just less hassle

      @@bioshock6935 The trouble is that if we all just used the web for shopping then we wouldn't have any shopping centres left at all. And that would play into the WEF hands who seem to want just one trader worldwide so everything can be delivered to our door. I could go on about that but that's another subject for another place. The moral is that all us home movie/home cinema enthusiasts need to support the physical shops like HMV. John.

      But unlike the old days when internet wasn't a thing and we had big shops in our town centers and traveling places like london was fun but them days are so long gone now. For me just to get to london would cost me over £30 so that's £30 extra on something i am going to buy.

    What a shop, I was so excited when Hmv announced a new store in Dublin last year but to my amazement there was no 4k / bluray section, since then they have introduced a token display but not worth the journey, I could get lost in that store for hours, great video yet again.

      I think the problem for the Dublin store is that there is not much of a market for home video discs in Ireland Colum. I know you've had a big influx of immigration recently but they don't tend to be film lovers like us British and Irish so it's not been a lot of help in that regard. Over here we are so tightly compressed that there are enough of us to justify a few shops selling 4K and Blu-ray discs so it's possibly the only benefit of the over population. John.

      It felt quite surreal going through those doors again after it was some sort of awful sweet shop for a while. If you do get over sometime then don't forget FOPP just down at Cambridge Circus and then Forbidden Planet just a bit further along Shaftestbury Avenue. Sadly just about everything else is gone now, the result of anti-business tactics to remove private transport from the streets of London. A few cinemas have survived but not many of them are still intact. Actually, it's just the later cinemas such as the two IMAX cinemas that I can think of. The rest are all smaller auditoriums now. The Odeon is still in the same auditorium but it's lost most of its cinema seating and now only have armchairs and sofas across the stalls and half of the circle. Terrible really but that's the current state of the industry.

      @@markbassett642 Are you sure it's an IMAX Mark because I didn't know there any left in New Zealand? There's one in Australia. The IMAX name is used on cinemas that don't actually have IMAX capability but it seems that 2K and 4K video projection is being accepted as IMAX which ain't doing the great name any favours. There are IMAX cinemas about still able to screen IMAX which no longer get the new releases though such as the Gujarat Science City in India. Such a shame they weren't able to get OPPENHEIMER because that would have made India only the sixth country in the world able to screen the film in genuine IMAX. At least central London has two genuine IMAX cinemas and this gives people a fairly easy destination to fly into to see a 15/70 print but the expense of it all means it's certainly not possible for everyone. It's sad the way cinema has gone but at least it's hanging on. John.

      LaserDisc was the big draw for me Kirk and that was in the 1990's. I don't think I ever purchased as many DVD's in there but that wasn't such an interesting format simply because the packaging of LD's is so much better than anything that's come along since. As for security tagging, they're more important than ever now because the police don't bother with shoplifting much at all. So many stores across the major cities now have to shell out on the extra expense of a security guard at the entrance. What a ridiculous situation we're in.

      HMV are re-opening within TOYS-R-US stores in Canada right now so combine that with the recent openings in Brussels and Dublin and you never know where this might end. Stockholm might be a future possibility. I also think OUR PRICE RECORDS are coming back too and they used to sell DVD's before they went out of business about 20 years ago.
      I've never seen TRAINSPOTTING. I can't stand to see any representation of drug taking so it's one I've always avoided until now but I'm a little de-sensitized to the revulsion of drugs now having seen so many films with people injecting or snorting substances so you never know.

He's been working on something else lately but similar to Doctor Who in many respects. Probably out later this year providing he gets all the mastering finished. What a massive job it is too. None of us really know what goes into getting something like these Blu-rays of television series prepared for authoring but I got a good idea from Paul yesterday.

If I was the top dog at Sunrise I'd be looking to supplant the name with HMV everywhere because it's the first and the original record store. A great name should be used wherever possible so Canada may be the next beneficiary of the revival of the great HMV name. Perhaps first they should get into exporting their products across the world from internet sales though. Surely that would be a good earner prior to branching out into physical stores across the world again.

      @@moviecollector5920 I would say it is better than Part 1, I really enjoyed the first film but I think the second film is on another level. The nearly 3 hour runtime flew by and I could have sat through much more and not been bored or fatigued. I didn't have to suspend my belief at any stage as the world-building, cinematography, VFX, characters, and the dialogue were all so exceptionally well realized. I really think Denis Villeneuve has achieved quite a remarkable feat. The score and special effects were also phenomenal, I haven't had my chair vibrate so much for any film, but at no point did it feel excessive or gimmicky. I think Hans Zimmer was also at his best for this film.
      It was really great to see it in a sold-out screening and to see so many people in the cinema, and overhearing positive comments on the way out. I managed to get a ticket to see it at the BFI on Monday and am looking forward to seeing it again. I noticed that the BFI is almost sold out for the whole month apart from some of the seats nearest the screen. I think its great that the success of Oppenheimer seems to be getting people back to the cinema, I do think films shot in IMAX for the premium format screens might be the future for cinemas, with the cinemas that invest in Dolby and IMAX auditoriums doing well while the cinemas without premium format screens having a harder time, I do think they need to do something to get people off the sofas and entice people back and the state of the art big screens might be the way to do it. It was nice to see so many people out at the cinema again so hopefully its the start of something! All the best!

    John, where are you watching Dune: Part Two? BFI IMAX is my guess as they are the only venue in Europe to have a 15/70mm IMAX print. I tried getting tickets but they’ve practically sold out (except front rows) until the end of March when I checked. So, I’ve booked to a watch it at The Ronson Theatre IMAX plus Dolby Cinema, both on the same day. Will try and get to BFI IMAX if I ever manage to get good seats…

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  4 месяца назад

      I would like to get to the BFI IMAX to see it simply because of the effort to get a 15/70 blow-up there. I don't expect it to look anywhere near as good as genuine IMAX but I am curious to see how good it is. I don't have any interest in seeing a video projection I'm afraid. I lost interest in that in cinemas by 2006 and that's why I largely gave up on cinema as I'd had too many disappointments by then. I only go to a cinema now when I know there's a film being screened. The prints aren't as good as they once were of course but at least the colour and density of film is there along with the random film grain only achievable on film. And a shutter in the projector of course because that makes a heck of a difference giving a more natural look.
      John.

    Brilliant John, its nice to see so much product available including LPs. Although I have not moved into 4k projection as yet, I am enjoying getting the odd blu-ray title from Imprint, the latest purchase was "Islands in the Stream" starring George C Scott , my first Imprint was a film that I liked from 1973 and that's "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", bought a few more since, I have been impressed by the work that Imprint goes into for there blu-ray releases, do HMV stock them?, Imprint are all zone free discs.

    • @moviecollector5920

      I don't think anyone imports Imprint releases for sale over here. Maybe some independents sell on eBay but I keep up with what they put out from their adverts on the back cover of Cinema Retro. You'll have to see if you can find a budget 4K video projector because it's surprising how good it can look. It takes someone who knows how film looks to get them right though because most home video collectors and dealers who sell the equipment tend to think exaggerated colours and brightest is best.

    John, here's an interesting idea (at least to me): Have your own private film festival devoted to all the films that won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. You can find a list of the films at several places on the internet. With these films you will get an fairly decent idea of the development of cinema. Plus, almost all the films are fun and highly enjoyable. Some of the earlier films (mainly from the 1940s) are available only on DVD, but most are on blu-ray. About half of the films are on 4K and 13 are in 3D. Tell me what you think. Anyone else please feel free to comment.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  4 месяца назад

      There is no way of doing a film festival without massive investment available. Just clearing the rights and sorting out everything else that goes with it would require a lot of work. The only realistic possibility would be to show brief extracts. However, showing extracts from home video discs is cumbersome at best so the only way to do it would be to rip the discs down to a hard drive (illegal) and then select the desired sequences and join them all up as a single video. A heck of a lot of work. Many of the older films will be available on film so where those prints are in a collection it's far simpler and easier to lift out the section and splice them together for a show. This is basically what has been done at the BFCC for 48 years now. The only people I can think of who would be able to put on a history of special effects film festival/retrospective would be the BFI at the NFT.
      John.

They’d all replicate cinema’s of the past. An art deco interior here, a 80’s red velvet there. It should be an experience to shop. I feel it’s all deliberate to turn us off shopping. You only have to look at McDonald’s of the past’s bright interior to the drab grey that it is today. Anyway enough of my ramblings. Great video again John.
