My high school shop teacher worked on the Ryerson when it was being built. In his own words he told us, "We were put in charge of designing the ship's ventilation system so that the top deck wouldn't smell like farts". What a guy!
There are no facilities left to unload a straight decker anymore and plans to make her a self unloader fell through so now she sits basically abandoned in Duluth she’ll be heading for the scrap yard just a matter of when
@@fishtug2420 The Frontenac is a self-unloader, having been converted in 1972. The Cedarglen was scrapped in 2019. The Ojibway is the last running straight-decker that I'm aware of.
That was an awesome look inside thank you very much. Don’t give up on the EL Ryerson yet!
Great ship! My late father sailed her many times with Inland Steel back in the 60's and 70's:)
Beautiful ship ! My late father-in-law was one of her captains back in the 70's. John H. Leeger was his name.

I think it should go to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc. I would love to see the inside of it. My dad was a welder at Manitowoc ship
Hamilton and Quebec city could unload her

Not much action for straight-deckers these days.

@@fishtug2420 Okay, that makes sense. She has the appearance of a classic straight decker, but I remembered hearing she was a little different.
