This is a lady who has total control of her vocal talents. What she wants her voice to do it does because she is THAT good. This incredible skill sets her apart from all others. She is not simply singing. She has something to say and damn, does she ever say it well.
Amazing! My fav is still Nancy Wilson’s but love that there’s so many versions that are truly interpretations and not just pale imitations of another singer, barely better than karaoke.and current singers just try to sing higher, louder and do interminable trills...you don’t need fireworks all through the song to make an amazingly memorable version.
When I see comments like "DivisiveOffering" I could cry.You can't compare Bassey and Wilson; two completely different styles of artist. Most of these artists are friends and hold each other in the highest esteem (a good example is Dionne, Gladys and Patti)and if you only knew what they think about people like you, you would go and dig a hole and jump in. Both Bassey and Wilson are legends; the very best there is, ultimate professionals at their craft.
Another day when I find another treasure from Shirley....a fine singer and performing artist early on, as this video demonstrates, who was to become the most admired female concert artist the world over.
she shows she is a brillaint talent in in this song and amazes audiences with this song brilliant dramatic powerful bassey is an amazing woman luv her luv her beautiful woman
I've been smitten ever since "Gold Finger"and she delivers on this one too. Another great rendition of this tune was done by Canadian singer Vanda King...well worth a listen.
It's to the credit of Bassey and Wilson that their respective versions are so distinctive and accomplished that there is little basis for comparison -- apples and oranges.
there's a very short clip of judy watching shirley on here. it's near the beginning of the BBC "imagine" doc on the making of shirley's "the performance" album (2009).
@mrmalelix completely agree with you- didn't ever think I was a Bassey fan until someone suggested that I listen to her interpretation of this song... wow... her voice really moves you.
ESTO ES LO QUE SE LLAMA UNA CANTANTE EN TODA LA LEY.......GRANDIOSA....CON UNA CANCION GRANDIOSA.........PURA ENERGIA DEL ALMA.........DE COMO UN SER HUMANO PUEDE HACER CON LA VOZ UN FRASEO ANIMICO....TOTALLLLLLLLLLLL
Am I the only one who is getting tired of, "I like this, but so-and-so is better"? WTF? This isn't a singing competition. Just enjoy what you're listening to, for Chrissake. Live in the moment instead of wondering who may or may not sound better, based on some random criteria.
You Can Have Him, I don't want him He's not worth fighting for Besides there's plenty more where he came from I don't want him, You Can Have Him I'm givin' him the sack So he can go right back, where he came from I'm afraid I never loved him He'd be better off with you I could never make him happy All I ever wanted to do was Run my fingers through his curly locks Mend his clothing, darn his socks Fetch his slippers and remove his shoes Wipe his glasses when he read the news Rub his forehead with a gentle touch Mornings after when he had a little to much Kiss him gently when he cuddled near And give him babies one for every year So you see That You Can Have Him, I don't want him I don't want him, You Can Have Him Because he's not the man for me Then I close the windows while he soundly slept Then I brayed the icebox where the food is kept I'd fix him breakfast that would please him most Eggs and coffee and some buttered toast ... (crying) Then I go out and buy the papers And when they've been read Spend the balance of the day in bed So you see That You Can Have Him, I don't want him I don't want him, You Can Have Him Because he's not my man I don't want him, You Can Have Him You Can Have Him, I don't want him I don't want him, You Can Have Him Because he's not the man for me
There is a much better recording of Miss Shirley singing this song in London. The recording in London moves me to tears. It was the time of the breakup with her first husband.
I love Shirley Bassey.....however, I heard Nancy's first....I agree that the song is performed totally in a different style...I'm more of a Nancy fan and it seems that EVERY song that REAL DIVA sings just exudes my thoughts exactly from Over the Weekend to Lush Life. With that being said, Ms. Bassey does a wonderful job.
@miss30427 Your defintely not the only one! Because I feel the same way. It's a shame that today's music industry has degraded itself. Today real talent has been reduced to nothing but looks and appearances and music today no longer has classy, sophisticated and well-written songs but songs that have bubble-gum lyrics that gets stale over time and loses its taste and is no longer remembered. Songs like that will not be remembered many years later.
judy garland*. barbra once said she hated a lot of singers and once she makes it to the music industry she wants great singers to hate her too for she will be greater. she said this to judy garland even if with a humor. at least "respectfully", shirley earns it more. that a century from now, carnegie hall will be named after her +
I think this would have come off better if she had put feeling into the song...JUST JOKING! That was awesome. I watched the screen as though I was at a concert. Could not turn my eyes away.
i meant barbra was inpsired from shirley bassey's performances. sorry for misinterpretation. yes i know shirley kept saying she's proud to befriend judy garland and that judy owns the title "the real show business woman". she idolize judy. the lips style, facial, and body dramas of dame shirley bassey inspired barbra. but we can say they both admired juday garland--who inpsired them. but we can say shirley is more original than barbra. she was discovered in 1957. barbra 61.
@BronzeVenus ~ Well siad. I really like Nancy Wilson, but her interpretation is quite different, while this is the definitive version. Comparisons are odious.
This is a great version of a great song but let’s not forgot Nina Simone sang it and played piano too, with exquisite ease and emotion that’s almost an embarrassment of riches
Adelle is huge and a huge JOKE.....how far down have we, no, they, lowered the bar....it was quite obvious at the oscars that Shirley's perfomance was renowned and garnered a standing ovation. And when Adelle was singing you felt completely EMBARRASSED for her....it was painful! And Ms Bassey is 77 years young I believe!

Spare me the drag Queen melodramatics ...who cares what her face looks like, its what comes out of her mouth that counts and when you can't understand 60 % of the lyrics , who cares ?! Shirley, slow down...not every song is a bond theme ! ugh..I'm covering my ears just like she's covring her eyes...
I too prefer NANCY. Much drama, but vocally, it sounds a little too EARTHA KITT 4 ME. And I do stress the "ME", so I don't want to hear all the shock and "sadness". GET OVER IT!

"And give him babies, one for every year". The way she delivers that line... you have to bear witness. Incredible performance.
I am bawling. Dame Bassey you are my living legend ❤
Ha ha 😀🤪
I'm bawling too😧☺️🤪
This is a lady who has total control of her vocal talents. What she wants her voice to do it does because she is THAT good. This incredible skill sets her apart from all others. She is not simply singing. She has something to say and damn, does she ever say it well.
It sends shivers down my spine every time, always has, always will. 💖💝🤩
I've always loved this song but this is the first time I've seen her perform it. OH MY GOD! What a performance, incredible, absolutely incredible!
A stunning emotional rollercoaster of a performance.
Love it! They sure don't make 'em like this any more! Thankfully in my lifetime tho.
Amazing! My fav is still Nancy Wilson’s but love that there’s so many versions that are truly interpretations and not just pale imitations of another singer, barely better than karaoke.and current singers just try to sing higher, louder and do interminable trills...you don’t need fireworks all through the song to make an amazingly memorable version.
how can anyone be as good as this? What a performance.
Nina Simone says: listen up
Nina Simone's is the best version

beautiful, soulful & heart wrenching...
amazing.
The best interpretation of this song I have ever heard. Beautiful voice and so much emotion. A truly unique, irreplaceable performer.
Nina Simone’s version 😢😢😢
So full of drama - and I love it!! She had to be one of Whitney Houston's vocal influences...
@@dottydolly4223the comment is Whitney was influenced by her not Whitney influenced Shirley!😊😅😂❤ your in Mr Givins's world now! School
What a devastating and beautiful performance.
The way the Dame is singing is fantastisch and beautiful and stunning.
Another day when I find another treasure from Shirley....a fine singer and performing artist early on, as this video demonstrates, who was to become the most admired female concert artist the world over.
Tragically beautiful!
This recording will always resonate with me on a fundamental level. Please keep it up always... thank you!
Stunning interpretation. Brought a tear to me eye. What a talent!
This is just amazing…
love the way she acts in all her performances,..about her voice and songs i wouldn't even try to make a comm,it's so needlessly!
Try Lara Fabian
Excellent! What a great performance!
WOW! what a performance! The whole Shirley Bassey package is 1st class which makes her the top star that she is. NOT many have it.
Shirley first heard this song on an LP ( Nina Simone At The Town Hall ) and said she was a tremendous fan !
she shows she is a brillaint talent in in this song and amazes audiences with this song brilliant dramatic powerful bassey is an amazing woman luv her luv her beautiful woman
Epic 🥰
I first heard the song performed by Nina Simone. Fell for her voice and the way she sang this song at that moment.
Shirley OWNS this Irving Berlin song!
I've been smitten ever since "Gold Finger"and she delivers on this one too. Another great rendition of this tune was done by Canadian singer Vanda King...well worth a listen.
SO PERFECT!!
It's to the credit of Bassey and Wilson that their respective versions are so distinctive and accomplished that there is little basis for comparison -- apples and oranges.
Best SB song ever....
there's a very short clip of judy watching shirley on here. it's near the beginning of the BBC "imagine" doc on the making of shirley's "the performance" album (2009).
You feel the words to this song as she sings. That's a talent
A TRUE GODDESS!!
Love Shirley's version. Also Liza's.
SPLENDID performance! Great, Shirley!

fhwoo ✅
My all time favorite love you Shirley
You Can Have Him, I don't want him
He's not worth fighting for
Besides there's plenty more where he came from
I don't want him, You Can Have Him
I'm givin' him the sack
So he can go right back, where he came from
I'm afraid I never loved him
He'd be better off with you
I could never make him happy
All I ever wanted to do was
Run my fingers through his curly locks
Mend his clothing, darn his socks
Fetch his slippers and remove his shoes
Wipe his glasses when he read the news
Rub his forehead with a gentle touch
Mornings after when he had a little to much
Kiss him gently when he cuddled near
And give him babies one for every year
So you see
That You Can Have Him, I don't want him
I don't want him, You Can Have Him
Because he's not the man for me
Then I close the windows while he soundly slept
Then I brayed the icebox where the food is kept
I'd fix him breakfast that would please him most
Eggs and coffee and some buttered toast
... (crying)
Then I go out and buy the papers
And when they've been read
Spend the balance of the day in bed
So you see
That You Can Have Him, I don't want him
I don't want him, You Can Have Him
Because he's not my man
I don't want him, You Can Have Him
You Can Have Him, I don't want him
I don't want him, You Can Have Him
Because he's not the man for me
Beautiful.....

Only version that rivals Nina. Shirley was more than a singer, she was an actress. Every performance was a one woman opera. Bravissima!
Female Jacques Brel
Have you not heard Nancy Wilson's version?
@@afeminame I have. I LOVE IT. All three of these ladies are divine.
TELL THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED TO HEAAAAR, Nina did this song justice
No one can touch Nina Simone’s absolutely perfect rendition. Ms. Simone also played piano which further delineates why her version is simply sublime.
@miss30427

Agreed.
A voz inigualável !!
bassey turned pro in 1953. the 25th anniversary album came out in 1978.
So obvious now, barbra striesand got inspired by shirley bassey's performance and facial expressions.

@mrmalelix And she can sing STILL>>>>at 73 sounding better than ever
shirl rules ok!!
@mmontana You must hear Nancy's "live" version.
Thanks, have you got any more clips from this show?
I thought I Nina Simone's version was wonderful, but this one really incredible.
I think this would have come off better if she had put feeling into the song...JUST JOKING! That was awesome. I watched the screen as though I was at a concert. Could not turn my eyes away.

I really wish I could find Ella Fitzgerald's version of this song... does no one know that she sang this too or what?
This is good, but try Nina Simone's version, I think it'll blow you away.
