    Never Give a Sucker an Even Break is a classic comedy released by Universal Pictures in 1941. It stars W. C. Fields, who also wrote the original story, under the pseudonym Otis Criblecoblis. Fields plays himself, promoting an extravagant and surreal screenplay he has written. He stars with singing star Gloria Jean, as well as Leon Errol and Franklin Pangborn, in supporting roles. Margaret Dumont, best known for her work with the Marx Brothers plays Mrs. Hemoglobin.

    I read a biography of Fields. He was more than a drunk comedian, he was immensely talented in a number of areas and was a self taught man. When on the road as the highest paid comedian in Vaudeville, he had 5 steamer trunks full of books with him and had read all of them. He mastered juggling early on and came up with tricks that no one else could do. He was also very generous to the down and out.

      :) As a European viewer, the name W. C. Fields was more like a distant myth to me... But I immediately fell in love with his persona as depicted here!

    One of the greatest lines, He tells his wife (or who ever) He is going downtown to play poker. She is aghast and asks "isn't that gambling?" " Ah, no, not the way I play."

    Personally I never questioned these W.C.Fields movies. They were part of my childhood. If I had a problem getting the jokes I always took full responsibility. These movies were always a part of me and I appreciated them as essential. Some of my friends still repeat the routines routinely remember them verbatim and with an almost sacred amusement. Thank You for this presentation as it encompasses so much of the spirit of the acting and reminds me to watch them all again.

      Like Mae West's famous line, "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me". That line was hilarious---- must of been before the censors, or that line was used because of the censors.

    This may have been addressed in previous comments, but just caught this now. Is that Moe Howard at 5:05 that takes the seat away from W.C. Fields?

    • @bwilliams463
      @bwilliams463 Месяц назад +6

      The actor is Bud Ross. The clip is from the short silent film 'The Pool Sharks' from 1916. However, Moe's brother and fellow Stooge Shemp Howard would share the screen with Fields in 'The Bank Dick' (1940).

    Sorry, I don’t find alcoholism funny. ( this is a comment left on an insightful video essay on The Thin Man I watched earlier that haunts me. I’m sure many would agree while still appreciating humor’s curative ability and humanity. The comment is so tone deaf one could imagine it coming from Margaret Dumont herself. Modern theatrical comedy is dead because studios fear offending a minority empowered by social media. This forces me into the arms of dead people like W. C. , L&H, Buster, Marx Bros, Stooges, etc. Thankfully, their brands of anarchy and mayhem still hold relevance to today’s world. It just saddens me that I can’t look forward to anything new.) This is the 3rd comment on this video and all were posted today, one year after it was uploaded. I hope it receives more engagement because the author did a fantastic job without a Wiki cut and paste, using his own voice and I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you!

      @@JenneferLenchner-b7x I can think of much worse, BUT, what you say is true, so many of these 'creators', only copy what someone else has already done, and then hope to "ride on the coat tails" to their own fame and fortune.
      W.C Fields was great, as were Laurel and Hardy, and the Marx Brothers, with Abbott and Costello having a few good skits, with the Three Stooges falling far short of any of those.
      I never understood how Mr. Fields was able to get his actions with the patient, as he played the dentist, past the censors of that day.
