@@weiliu7319No, people like me who don't like listening lyric sopranos in mezzo roles. And I can't stand her theatrical, cocky personality on stage so as her chicken-like meddle register. Horne at least had virtuosity, range and unique tone.
I have recently discovered this mezzo. What an absolutely magnificent voice and perfectly suited to this lovely aria. If only Donizetti could have heard her!
Brava! This one belongs to Cossotto! I once had a cassette tape of her singing this aria and I wore it out - have been hearing it in my head ever since. Glorious. I can understand the comparison to Verdi; this is Donizettti's "O Don Fatale" - very similar construction and excellent composition. Funny, for being a coloratura lover, I find all the best arias written for mezzos! Anna Bolena my favorite opera, I think the finer writing in it is for Giovanna, too.
Her diva behavior may put off some, but this woman loves to sing, she sings extremely well, and she has a beautiful voice. And her smile just wins me over!
Contessa Puppi Give a listen to Jamie Barton, a young American mezzo with OUTSTANDING talent. She won the Met Council Auditions back in 2007, won both the song prize and main competition in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2013, and is starting to be snatched up by opera houses. I truly believe Jamie is going to soar to new heights, become a household name in opera, and ultimately become a legend of our time.
(This was when opera was really...well, The Opera.) Just realized that this superb aria is absolutely the basis/inspiration for Eboli's aria when Verdi came to write it.
@AmatureComposer absolutely! Also I think their voices were made for each other...just listen to the final of Il Trovatore ( live or studio) - perfect harmony!!
cossotto is fabulous. I have always thought so, and could care less, even though I am a Callas fan, that some thought she upstaged her in Norma.. Callas should have thought of that, when she of her own volition stopped practicing, and let her voice go... That is not Cossotto's fault. She is a dynamic, presence, with quite the voice.
As much as I admire her voice, her attempts to steal the spotlight from the other singers was annoying and unprofessional. I know she tried to do that to Sutherland when they were singing "Norma" and she failed.
I hope you got it from reliable sources. The media was in charge of misplacing Cossotto since his appearance with Callas. Today in the recordings it is noticeable that the young Fiorenza reduced the volume of her voice so as not to overshadow the tired and weak voice of Callas in her last Norma. But the press of the time chose to see the dark side, and since there were no free recordings at that time, people believed what they read in the newspapers
Cossotto is incredible singer and I cannot understand who are those people who disliked her. Totally insane
Horne fans. 🙂

I will say this for the indomitable Fiorenza -: she always gave everything to her audience. She was a force of nature.
Sublime !
The great Cossotto again! To me the greatest Mezzo! Just great!
bravi! grazia mile!
Who can be compared with Cossotto today? God, she
was magnificent!

She's really the best Leonora in La Favorita... absolutely fan of her singing and acting!
Grandissimo!
Fiorenza !!!BRAVA!!!!!!

I’m here because of that one Friends scene where Phoebe gets mad at Ms. Pac-Man
Her diva behavior may put off some, but this woman loves to sing, she sings extremely well, and she has a beautiful voice. And her smile just wins me over!
I recommend Marian Anderson and Eleonora di Cisneros.

Notwithstanding her current success, I really doubt that Jamie Burton will become a legend of our time....
I love this video...Cossotto really gave a smashing performance here.
Masterly performed... she owned a talent and an unusual spirit for singing... her role in this opera is beyond art... she is simply superb!
Magnificent !
BRAVISSIMA!!!

she's one of the greats! i was a slave to her amneris at the met a year after this.
Mágico, hermosa Aria😢
Cossotto's greatest role.
Bravissima!!
(This was when opera was really...well, The Opera.) Just realized that this superb aria
is absolutely the basis/inspiration for Eboli's aria when Verdi came to write it.
Brava Fiorenza!!!!
Un vrai bonheur ! Quelle maestria
Canta senza risparmiarsi mai, è proprio vero . Da brivido.
Andrea Bonaccorsi.
Meravigliosa e regale!
Very powerful, brava Fiorenza though I admit she makes it sound more Verdi than Donizetti.

Is this the same production with Kraus?
Yes
She's certainly in love with herself.
One has to be, for this.

Oliviero De Fabritiis.
FOR ME SHE WAS SOPRANO
As much as I admire her voice, her attempts to steal the spotlight from the other singers was annoying and unprofessional. I know she tried to do that to Sutherland when they were singing "Norma" and she failed.

Not as good as Eleonora Di Cisneros or Marian Anderson and the bad acting makes it worse.
Che noiosa cantante. Ogni volta canta uguale, senza vita, senza cuore. Come una machina!
