I mean really, there's not much to complain about. Although I do think for some people our summer can be a bit much. I live in a sub tropical area and it does get humid and it's not always pleasant, but its worth it for the rest of the great weather. When I lived overseas, it took for me to come home to realise just how bright and beautiful our sky was, and everything else really.

Hurricanes and Cyclones spin in opposite direction due to Coriolis force. There is not enough water in a toilet, sink or bath for Coriolis to overcome factors like the shape of the container.
Also, Australian toilets to not have as much standing water as American toilets.
As a side note, the outlet pipe is wider so they are less likely to clog.

Western Australian here - the eastern states tend to forget there is a western third to the country and this state has, in 1933, voted to secede from the Commonwealth of Australia despite the constitution saying it is not possible to do so. In fact, prior to Federation, it was only the vote of the residents of the goldfields in the eastern part of the state, that carried the vote for Western Australia to become part of the Federation of the states, to form the nation of Australian in 1901 - the majority of city voters voted against it.
Perth is regarded as a very laid back city, much slower paced than Sydney and Melbourne. If you want exciting night life, hectic life style, Perth is NOT the place to be.

Particularly interesting because a saved a Yellow faced whip snake from our cat the other day. When I put the photos of it online 9/10 people said it was a Brown Snake. Last spider I had to round up was a nasty one. A big unknown species of either trapdoor or Funnel web. Nearly bit my dog's nose and it was actually one of the most aggressive spiders I've ever seen. Its true that Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory are Territories, not States, as some commenters are hyperventilating about, but practically it makes virtually no difference except in cases of constitutional law where the Fed gets heavy handed and over-rules them on something. They cant do that to a state.

Each state of Australia has its own characteristics. As the colonies expanded out from Sydney, they were settled at different times and in different climates so they formed different habits. Queenslanders growing up in the tropics and sub-tropics are different to temperate climate Victorians and Tasmanians. South Australians are just psychopaths but they do make some nice wine.
It has become more 'homogenised' with people moving between states quite readily for jobs or retirement.

As an Aussie I would fervently like more Danish and North European policies in place. And definitely wish we had the EU food standards. (We allow 4000 artificial food additives that are not allowed in EU food, while the USA allows 6000). Australia is more right wing and less environmentally friendly than Northern Europe. So politically and legal wise we could be a lot better. On the other hand our geographical isolation contributes greatly to the sense of safety, and therefore relaxation in Aussie culture. The housing crisis is a true crisis and politicians are treating it like a problem of supply and demand, when in reality it is a fundamental change in economics: instead of housing being either owner occupied or rental occupied as an Income generating investment Asset, housing is now further divided into two more classes taking a huge slice away from occupied housing: unregulated Air BnB short term rentals, and houses held as empty appreciating assets. Letting tenants occupy it would degrade the house’s physical condition and this resale value as an asset.
Let’s see if those two problems get recified.

So many Policies need removing but unfortunately most majority parties on both sides are reluctant or unwilling to address it head on. It is only going to get harder for the Youth and in a country this size it almost seems a joke. A house is more than just an investment, it's a Home.

    1. You would think you would do some basic research about a place before you moved to another country. I did when I lived and worked in the USA.
    2. She measures the area of Aus by flight time which is illogical. Why not just say that Australia is about the same size as the contiguous 48 states of the USA (ie USA minus Alaska and Hawaii).
    3. I feel honoured when a Huntsman visits my home. I let him/her stay as long as they like. They are non-venomous, timid, do not build webs, usually live only on the ceiling and only come down a foot or two to say g'day, but what's more, they eat all the mozzies, flies, ants, other spiders and insects.
    4. Australian food is NOT like American food. Aus food is a lot better even the American fast food chains have better quality food in Australia. Remember, it was Aus that sent Starbucks bankrupt in Aus because the coffee is crap.
    5. Australia is a constitutional monarchy and not a republic like the USA. Australia has the parliamentary system of government based on the British Westminster system, but instead of having a House of Lords as in the UK, Australia adopted a Senate similar to the USA. The Prime Minister is not elected by the people like the USA President. He/She is just a member of parliament elected by the people in the electorate they represent and then is elected leader of the governing party by MPs who are members of that party.

Snakes can detect heat, so standing still won’t make you not seen, however by doing so, you are not presenting a threat to them, and therefore are safer. If you are right next to it, stand back, out of range from it’s bite, and if you are not right at it, just run lol they are usually not that fast and are not gonna chase you down despite what I always thought when running from them as a kid on the farm 😂 also, if you see a snake put its head and neck in the shape of an S (Remember S for Strike) it is making itself ready to strike you and bite. So beware. Never corner a snake, as it will feel threatened and is very likely to attack you. It almost certainly will actually. And if you come to Australia, especially if you want to hike or if it is summer, learn how to apply a compression bandage. It is how to treat snake bites before getting to a hospital so you make it there without dying. Every kid learns this at school in Australia. Usually every year, reptile and animal keepers, or biologists will come to the school, talk to the kids, show the animals, and teach them safety. Just like in Australia, there is a history of kids drowning in dams or pools because it is hot here and kids wonder around, so every kid at school learns how to swim. And laws say you must put a fence around your pool.

Perth WA. Bloody hot, nice place, mostly friendly people, (other states friendly too, WA a little bit more.) many beautiful coastal towns to enjoy. Mining capital of Australia.
Adelaide SA. Slower lifestyle, country town feel. Nice place but slightly behind the rest of the country. Often joked about as being a little bit backward.
Darwin NT. Darwin city least popular place for most Australians, high crime rate. The rest of the Northern Territory has magnificent scenery and crocodiles.
Brisbane QLD. Beautiful city, three months of sunny weather, rest of the year cyclones further up and Pandora's box of erratic weather. Every bug known to mankind.
Sydney NSW. Vibrant city, beautiful bay, opera house, fast paced lifestyle, magnificent scenery in the blue mountains, and home to the number one Aussie rules team, the Sydney Swans.
Melbourne Victoria. Worldwide group voted Melbourne, "the worlds most livable city," seven years in a row. Vibrant cultural art/music/nightlife scene, while retaining an easy-going, comfortable and relaxing feel to the city. An hours drive to the world-famous Great Ocean Road, 35K to the picturesque towns dotted around the gorgeous rainforest of the Dandenong ranges. Coffee capital of the world. World-famous Melbourne Cricket ground. (MCG) (has Australia's best weather, fireworks will come in the comments, but Melbourne rarely has the "extreme" weather conditions of most other states)
Hobart TAS. Most Aussies and visitors enjoy other parts of Tasmania besides the capital. Launceston, (pronounced Lonceston) Devonport, Ulverstone, Burnie as well as the lesser known coastal areas, plus Cradle Mountain and many other sightseeing delights.
Canberra Australian capital territory. Downside is it's full of politicians and kangaroos. Often registers the coldest temperatures. Locals rave about it, not so much other Aussies. Unnatural/ plastic feel to it, as it was purpose-built from scratch to be Australia's capital.
Most Australians will usually say the best state, is the one they were brought up in. (and will often bag the others)

Huntsman spiders are harmless. Only weak minded people are scared of them. big bonus is they dont make webs. where I live its spider city. my gutters block up with spider webs, not leaves. every tek screw on the side of a shed or fence has its own tiny spider making a tiny web to catch tiny bugs. the small birds (typically the 'Willy Wagtail') fly around eating them off buildings.
Practically there is minimal differences between people in different states, but certain things are played up. Queenslanders tend to be a bit more 'Ocker' (stereotypical Australian) in their accent and mannerisms. Sydney-siders have a quirky way of pronouncing 'oo', e.g. school is 'skiewl'. Melbournians are all hipsters. Taswegians all have two heads due to inbreeding.

The best advice she can give to her friends is "get off your backside and come and have a look, you wont be sorry - there so much to do and see" But tell them they need a lot more than a 4 week holiday, Tassie alone is going to take 3 - 6 months and then you only see half of it, bush walks, waterfalls, lakes and don't me started on the quality of the food. Every state and Territory has enough to fill in the rest of your life. And the best advice I can give another Aussie is "if you don't know what I'm talking about, then you haven't spent enough time looking at what we have. This place is fantastic, full of wonderful people. BTW it's impossible to take a bad photo in Tassie.

I've had a wild python strike at me but jumped back before impact. A magpie sought me out and hit me with such force, as an adult, that I was knocked off balance and left bleeding from my temple. I was travelling in my Motorhome and was parked where others were entering this area. I put a sign on the back to 'Beware of Magpies', yet most thought I was referring to the AFL team of Collingwood and paid the price! I was bitten by a bullant when a young child and screamed blue murder, it was that painful. Right on my fingertip when climbing an embankment. We all simpky need to share the environment.🇦🇺💖

Personally i think people like the idea of Australia because of our work life balance and our attitude to it. I have spoken to a lot of my American friends and they tell me that over there they 'live to work'. Everything seems to be about working and making money. What is the point of making money if you don't get to enjoy it? We work hard and we play hard because life is short and it is pretty bloody pointless if you don't get to enjoy it as much as possible.

I went to school in the US for a couple of years. I was told by an American that those divisions of Australia on the map are NOT states, because they are "too big" to be: "Texas is the biggest state".... Where do you start?

  • @doubledee9675
    @doubledee9675 4 месяца назад

The US has states and territories, as does Australia. The main difference there is that by and large the States are larger in area than those in the US - very simply there are many fewer of them covering an overall area not that much smaller than the US. The national population is under 10% that of the US. Again, very much as in the US, the powers of the federal government are spelt out in the national Constitution but the powers of the States are not (I appreciate that that is a generalisation, but a thread such as this is not the place for legal niceties). The powers of the territories are spelt out. There is an Australian Capital Territory pretty comparable with the District of Columbia, and the Northern Territory which covers pastoral land in the central north, There are a couple of others that we need not bother about here.

As for differences between states, I would say the Aussie accent of Queensland tend to be broader than elsewhere but more so if you go inland. Queenslanders tend to talk with their mouths semi closed ( to keep the flys out in summer ). Folk in Adelaide in South Australia tend to talk slightly posher, however Melbourne and Sydney folk tend not to have strong accents.
Most Australians can generally understand English from any overseas tourists regardless of accents because we are widely travelled and watch both US and UK TV (because local stuff is boring to us.)

@MichaelRogers-et8dq I heard of this in an episode of the X-Files when it was stated that water was going down the drain in the opposite direction to what is necessarily the norm. I then got up and tried it myself and it worked in my bathroom sink. There's no need to fill it up completely, but just concentrate on whether the water is swirling clockwise or counter-clockwise. Try a little water in a bathtub if you have one. That may work. If that doesn't work, you can always take my word for it? I'll never give you anything but an honest answer.💖

There are differences between the States, but I wouldn’t say they’re dramatic, it’s usually some kind of bragging right for one thing or another, but not aggressively for most people. The accents may vary slightly, the real differences in accent you might see is between the Bush and Regional places and bigger Cities. If you were to compare the risk of a Civil War in the U.S. to Australia, it’d be very unlikely to happen here, the aggro just doesn’t get to that level.

There are many ways the cultures can be divided. There are differences in the types of sports player/watched, the history of settlement, different aboriginal cultures, different laws and different social 'climates'. NSW tends to be very beuarocratic and is commonly referred to as a 'nanny state' meaning it holds your hand and makes rules for everything. Queenslanders on the other hand will not be told what to do, QLD is very much the Texas of AUS, horrible environmental impact, lots of mining and forestry, rebellious population, lots of rural population centres.

7:20 City Beach, which is the closest to Perth CBD (10 km) and is now the best beach in the metro area.
Trigg is another good beach which up until the 80's had great surf, along with Scarborough. Before the 80's both beaches used to get regular 3 to 4 metre waves.
