I can’t get enough, and often pull the box set of dvds out to watch over, and over. It used to be on Netflix, but not now I believe. When I feel a bit down, I find Kath and Kim cheer me up. One of my favourite episodes is from Season 3, episode 4, “Kicking up a Stink”, when Kath’s cabbage pastizzis affect the Drama Director unexpectedly, and Kim wears a running suit like Kathy Freeman in the Olympics, and breaks her nose. Unlike what some are saying, it's only a typical Victorian accent. But don't ask me to explain the differences, as they are subtle that even most Aussies don't notice it. Different states sound different, then there's the categories of posh, common, bogan and bushie accents.
    But yes, this show gets progressively funnier, some favourites are Kath and Kell's wedding, the Melbourne cup day at the races and the one where Kim is heavily pregnant and trying to figure out names for the baby. But then, the highland dancing is side splittingly awkward.

    They're exaggerating, for comedic purposes, the very worst (hard on the ears!) aspects of the Aussie accent, usually associated with persons of limited education. Classic example is Kath's "look at m-oi-y, look at m-oi-y" for "look at me, look at me". The "good room" (once known as the "front parlour") is a room usually towards the front of the house where you might entertain guests i.e. your "best" room kept neat and tidy in order to impress.

  • @ellaeadig263
    @ellaeadig263 Месяц назад +2

    Yesssss I'm so glad you got around to watching this! To answer some of your questions, it's set in the early 2000s. The accent they speak in is not really regional to anywhere in Australia but more a socioeconomic thing. That way of speaking ('i' sounds said like 'oi' etc) is associated with lower-earning generally lesser-educated people. It's not as common nowadays but used to be very common in the 80s and 90s. Kath and Kim are what we call "cashed up bogans" - people who moved from lower socioeconomic status to more middle class, who started out with not much money and got a bit comfortable by the time of the noughties. Not rich, just comfortable. Also you asked about the area they live in - that's a fairly typical suburban street in Australia. Most houses are that size, especially in the outer suburbs where there's more room and bigger blocks. The show is trying to poke fun at the stereotypes about very very average Australians, hence them living on an average street in an average suburb.

    😅😂🤣 So pleased you enjoyed. It was such a hit in Au. FYI that particular accent is typical of suburban working class Melbourne & parts of Victoria. If you watch more, you'll hear the 2 key actors take on different roles & adopt a "posh" Melbourne accent. Extremely funny.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    Kath & Kim is also known for its hilarious word plays, such as Effluent instead of affluent, and Mere Formality instead of Formal / Official. Chardonnay pronounced with a hard C gets a good run later in the series leading to Kim calling someone a shunt when they correct her.

    Fun facts - the opening theme is a parody of 'The Young and the Restless ' opening
    Also the real life house was in a canal estate, so you'll notice there is a lot of tight shots to avoid showing it (I guess they thought a canal estate was too effluent for Kath lol)
    But if you look carefully you can sometimes see it (bedroom curtains sometimes are see through and often in the backyard scenes you can make out a bit of water in the Far corner of the screen- the fence was actually built specifically for the show to hide it! Lol

    Kylie also played Brett and Kim’s daughter in one of the later episodes channeling her neighbours character with the wedding dress

    A lot of people don't appreciate or understand the very clever wordplay and writing of this show. My partner and I have seen the entire series multiple times and also have it playing as a background "comfort show" and we catch new things ALL the time time! In addition, there is uniquely Australian humour that pertains to our culture. I and others will, I'm sure, explain it to you as the series goes along.

    Kath and Kim is Australian comedy gold. The first season is amazing. It is from the early 00s. The wedding episode is outrageous. The characters are trying to sound hip and cool, but they just come off as uncultured. This is what we would call middle-class bogans. Watch Housos if you want low class/unemployed bogans. Quite a different type of bogan. Pot smoking, beer drinking, and just uncouth. I can sort of relate a little bit to Kath and Kim. I grew up in a middle class family in Melbourne, but the difference for me was that my parents were highly educated. My Dad was a nerdy scientist. Kath and Kim shows that bogans can come in many different forms and yes, you can get rich and somewhat uneducated bogans too.
