- Day 64 Isafjordur Iceland
Rooted in a rich history as a trading post since the 16th century, Ísafjörður has evolved from its humble beginnings into the vibrant heart of the Westfjords, right up in the northwest corner of Iceland. The Westfjords are regarded as the most remote part of the island and even the Ring Road avoids the Westfjords altogether. Despite enormous improvements in the road system, this region still remains the least visited.
Known for its significant role in Iceland's fishing industry since the mid-19th century, today, Ísafjörður is a cultural epicenter,
We went to the remote area through the Glacier Fjords to where once the town of Hesteyri. stood. This is now a wildlife reserve. We could see the biggest glacier in the area called Drangajokull.
There were plenty of wildflowers including Lupins which bloom spectacularly in the seemingly inhospitable volcanic soils. These vibrant flowers transform the landscape with shades of purple, pink, and blue. However they are a relatively recent import. Lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis) was brought over from Alaska in the 1940s for its soil-enhancing properties. They help prevent Iceland's fragile volcanic soils being washed away.
We also found Mountain Avens Holtasoley . This dainty, but resilient flower is Iceland's national flower. Found in all areas of the country, it grows mainly on gravelly mountain slopes and moorland. The plant is also known as ptarmigans leaf, since the popular bird likes to eat its leathery leaves during the winter months.
Some people visited Vigur Island, & saw spectacular birdlife, including many Puffins
