    Manlius XC Coach Bill Aris has his troops eyeing #4, even while celebrating threepeat;
    Better race strategies paying off for Sveinsson

    It’s not that Bill Aris doesn’t savor the victories and the magnificent performances his girls (and boys) put together each year, but what he facilitated after Manlius XC (Fayetteville-Manlius) NY had won their third straight Nike Cross Nationals championship at Portland Meadows Saturday spoke volumes of the recipe for success at the New York school.
    Manlius XC comes together after the race, with the Aris father-son coaching team looking on ...
    As the last of his girls clipped her chip off her shoe, Coach Aris was barely able to contain his excitement - not just about what had just happened, but what was about to begin. The girls knew it was coming, even if it wasn’t at the forefront of their minds at the moment. “Let’s start getting ready for number four!” he declared. The girls sprang to their feet and were seen shortly thereafter doing barefoot strides on the whoop-de-doo hills on the back part of the course.
    Hours later, his hoarse voice barely audible, Coach Aris explained that it’s the team’s custom to do some barefoot strides after a race. He subscribes to many of the training ideas of Lydiard and Cerutty, and strengthening the feet by running barefoot was a Lydiard principle. But it’s also represents the continual moving forward of any Aris team. “Win or lose, you’re going to go to work the next day,” he said. “My seniors kind of agonize and groan that we start thinking about next year so quickly.”
    Meghan Anklin, the #2 Manlius runner Saturday, would laugh later thinking about it. “It was just like last year, as soon as the race was over, it’s ‘get ready for next year.’” Last year, Anklin ran as the “8th runner” in the open race and had one of the highest non-Kenyan finishes. She wistfully remembers wanting to savor her race a bit further. “But we know our coaches know what’s best for us.”
    Aris can’t help it; he’s always looking ahead. Opponents have learned, especially the last few seasons, that they better look ahead, too - because few runners in any race are going to see any Fayetteville-Manlius runners behind them. Last year, Aris talked about how he learned his team functioned best by going out aggressively and making it a strength race. With many of the same girls back this year, the strategy was on display again. Manlius runners, at one point after things started to break up in the first kilometer, had three in the top six. As the early scores came in at the kilometer marks, they quickly had a lead of 50-plus, then more than 100 (raw scores).
    ... then launches into the post-meet striders.
    The team race was over almost before it had begun. The two-time defending champs would roll home with 66 points. The Santa Clarita XC Club (Saugus) CA, reportedly “banged up” with a variety of ailments - Kaylin Mahoney didn’t run all week because of shin problems - rallied strongly in the late going to take second at 135. A terrific battle for the next four spots saw Wilmington XC (Tatnall) DE claim third with 182, with 2004 champion Kinetic XC (Saratoga) NY fourth at 193, Adirondack XC (Queensbury) NY fifth at 203, Newton XC (Newton South) MA sixth at 204, and Fort Collins XC (Fort Collins) CO 7th at 218.
