This video series was intended to get the members of our radio club adequately familiar with the radio to use it for field day. I didn't want to provide too much information about how to adjust the radios since most of the operators needed these tutorials had no idea how to deal with a DSP based radio. If I ever a hold of one of radios again I may try my hand at covering the more complex details.

Nice refresher training for my trusty 7200. It's my back-up now, with my 7300 doing most SSB. I have my 7200 doing digi work.....well, I am getting there anyhow.

Once I get my general I may have to get one these radios. I like the fact that it has features to make it more accessible to people with visual impairments. Besides the voice function, the layout of the buttons seems reasonably blind friendly. I don't need those features, but it's nice that they are there.
A big selling point for me is the USB port on the back. Being able to do rig control and digital modes from one cable is very cool.

Icom says that they left off the FM so that they could tighten up the roofing filters. We used the radio on 6M last year for one of the VHF contests and it did very well on SSB.

the 7200 awesome receiver how can I fix the transmit audio to give it a more Fuller sound

As I recall, and this is now going pretty far back in my memory, the the 7200 had a receiver on par with the old IC-746 but I could be mistaken. The 718 is a good basic receiver but it has almost always been a sub $1000 radio plus at this time it is a pretty old design. When I picked the 7200 I wanted the club to have something that would work for contests and this was the best radio, at the time, for the money. I think Icom may have given us a deal because we bought two. There is nothing wrong with the 718. If you are going to buy a new radio now, and you don't plan on putting it in a multi-radio contest station, I would go for the IC-7300, but that's just my personal preference.

      Greg Jones Dear Greg,
In The Pacific and Europe the 7200 is deleted and no longer stocked by the Icom agents and the retailers have run out of shop stock.
      (I've rung around and checked).
Yes, I have looked at USA online stores and they appear to be still available. The US market is most probably still separate to the world market.
And Yes, the Japanese Icom international site still shows it as being available.
I am about to purchase 2 of the Icom 718 models with DSP.
Good luck Sir and Happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you.
      Cheers :-)

There is plenty of metal and shielding for the important stuff. The case, regardless of the material, has enough holes in it to not provide much shielding, the real shielding is provided by the interior chassis pieces. I think the radio is made out of the same material (metal) that is used in the small water resistant HT radios. I don't have the radio at the moment so I can't check it out.

Say, I've had a 718 and can't help but notice certain similarities between it and this 7200. Would you tend to believe they are similar receivers? It appears the 7200 is a 718 with a face lift and added gingerbread.

@MrMaxwellBrowne Quite rare. But DX QSOs on FM are cool--audio quality.
I worked some JAs on 10 meter FM--quite a thrill.

Nice radio but needs AM & FM modes.
But only for sideband and CW I guess this can bring the used price Down.
Everything seems be desirable but icom could of made power on switch a manual push in out button .

  • @n4lq
    @n4lq 4 года назад

One of these showed up at Field Day. 3 of us spent 15 minutes trying to change bands. This required a manual. Then we tried to get the CW key to work. An hour later after digging through the manual...no luck. I know it needs to be in BK in mode but we couldn't find how to change it. We finally gave up and someone went and picked up the IC-7100 which is much more intuitive. I hate this rig.
