    Vladimir Putin must definitely be in the running to get a Nobel prize! He has single-handedly pushed Europe towards green energy faster than even Greta Thunberg could have imagined, increased the defence spending hugely in Germany and throughout NATO, strengthening it more than many would have thought possible, even adding previously neutral Finland and perhaps Sweden as well, and exploded the myth of what a great military machine Russia has. What a huge accomplishment for a single person!

    A very good discussion again. Anderi Illarionov made a point, which I haven't heard expressed so clearly before, and which I think is true, that Finland and Sweden joining the NATO is a win-win situation even for the Russian people. On the other hand Finland, Sweden and the rest of the Europe get more security, but also as the likelihood of there being a war between Russia and the rest of the Europe will diminish, the Russian people are less likely to be dragged into a war by whoever happens to be their leader.

    Dialog with Russia is unrealistic as long as Putin is in power. Putin and Russia have to be isolated totally until Putin is out of the picture. Unity of the nations against Russia is the only way to drive home the point that Czarist Russia will never be resurrected from the graveyard of history.
    Heidi is quite right in saying Putin can not be trusted to mean what he says, that we should be realistic when dealing with an untrustworthy Putin who lacks integrity and other moral virtues. Her analysis is best and most comprehensive.

    Putin actually expected the everyone to allow him to invade Ukraine just like when he annexed Crimea. At the inception of NATO the former Soviets blockaded access to Berlin, established an embargo, eventually built a closed border between Warsaw Pact Nations and NATO Nations and attempted to seige Berlin by cutting access in and out of West Berlin (see Berlin Airlift). So consistently the Soviets and Russia have consistently opposed NATO and brought tactics to bear short of open warfare but included incursions into air spaces. The Soviets brutally repressed independence movements and alignments non-Soviet approved within the Warsaw Pact.

    • @Opedwriter
      @Opedwriter 2 года назад

      But after the collapse of communism and the Warsaw pact the Russians haven't threatened anyone. NATO had become obsolete but by continuing to expand eastwards managed to find a new enemy for itself in Russia. The US uses NATO to assert control over Europe and isolate Russia.

    Isn't Russia/former USSRs WarPac threatening Europe the main reason for the, successful, mutual defense alliance called NATO? So, Putin, by threatening smaller European countries standing alone is confirming that joining NATO is the smarter security move. I wouldn't mind other nations around the world joining such a mutual defense alliance to deter aggression because it has worked.
    Secondly, who really cares what Russia thinks now? Do we consult with the murderer, burglar, rapist before we install an alarm, call the police, defend ourselves to find out what they think about it? Russia has over-stepped (after a international pass on Chechnya, South Ossetia, Syria, and the Crimea) and shown that it is a paper bear (incompetent leadership, inferior equipment, unprofessional undisciplined soldiers). Russia has the nuclear threat, but heck, it is the same aging, expensive-to-maintain nuclear threat that has been in place (and on "high alert") for 70 years.
    And what is the Russian endgame? essentially the whole world is against Russia now, aside from some tinpot dictators, and even former economic allies are afraid of the economic consequences of being perceived as supporting Russia. Banking, communications, computing, transportation/air travel, entertainment, and just inclusion in and access to world culture are rolling back in Russia to the early 90s. So ironically, Putin got back the Russia that he nostalgically longed for.

    You can talk all you want but unless Putin does a 180, we first need to deal him a complete defeat and bloody his nose to teach him a lesson then and only then should talks be serious. Putin only understands strength and hard power and we need to show him that.
    If we don't deal Russia a military defeat any peace can only be temporary.
    Obiously direct threats to Russia itself should be minimal and we need to make it clear we're against Russian aggression not against the Russian people.

    Russia can easily provide free farmland in Siberia to 200 million willing Chinese and other nationalities so it can bulk up in terms of population and population wise have a larger pool of potential soldiers and tax base. Then form a formal military alliance with China, Hungary. Iran and Syria & Libya. Then restructure its military based on the lessons learned and in 20 years it will have a much better country to withstand what NATO or West may want to throw at it militarily or industrially.
