- AP is live from the NATO headquarters in Brussels and Stockholm where a flag-raising ceremony takes place to mark Sweden's accession to the alliance. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson attend the ceremony.
Sweden formally joined NATO as the 32nd member of the transatlantic military alliance, ending decades of post-World War II neutrality and centuries of broader non-alignment.

aside from the tiny segments of Kaliningrad Oblast (the former East Prussia), and the small coastline at the very far segment at the extreme end of the Gulf of Finland (now easily blockaded across the short distance between Finland and Estonia), Russia has successfully turned the Baltic Sea into a NATO Internal body of water. No Russian ship or sub will be going ANYWHERE in the Baltic without being tagged and watched thru a microscope.

Honestly, I cant see Eire pushing that direction.. they aren't threatened by ANYONE. Why bother taking on the financial obligation ? THey can play an important role in representing Western European ideals of democracy, liberty, etc, while being free to enter situaitons NATO members could never arrange.
Ireland may not be NATO, but never forget half of the USA has Irish ancestors. While you may not think it a big deal across the pond, it's still a big deal to us. And I doubt the USA would ever stand for anything happening to Ireland. The rest of NATO, I don't know.
