HEY! On a scale from 1 to 10 How funky do you want your fruit to be? Hit me with it down below!
0
5?
11!
Mango is the bench mark. No funkier than that. Although most fruit is kinda funky...Sometimes I forget strawberries are sitting in the fridge drawer and it will smell a little tart in there.
james brown
“I’ve tried Cempedak three times in the past. Each time, I didn’t like it. So I’m going to try it again.”
Wow. No one can call Jared a quitter.
No way, this guy is PhD committed, dutifully married committed. I have returned every few months to binge the weird fruit guy for the like, no shit, the last 10 years. He's been systematically churning out content the entire time. There's an insect sting pain index made by a scientist who subjected himself to thousands of stings so he could rate them. Considering how subjective the human experience is, this is the only way to realistically compare a given domain to all its myriad facets. If there's another expert human more qualified to compare world's fruits, I certainly haven't seen them. If there is a kingdom of weird fruits, Jared would most certainly reign on high as the one true king.
I'm waiting for that coffee table book. A decent editor, some entertaining ghost writing, lots of glossy photographs from all over the world and you'd have a book worthy of calling a magnum opus. Street contortionist to weird fruit scientist, content creator, and author (someday?), nobody can claim this man has led a boring life.
the new funk scale is a great addition ;)
"spinal cord" is not a word I want to hear when a fruit is being described
"snotty nuggets"
Lol. It is when it looks like you're dissecting an alien looking plant.
i like the funk scale 👌🏻
Me too.
The James Brown blerp made me crack!
@@dogbee LOL
I Feel Good!
Same here
this has just become one of my favourite youtube channels.
fascinating how much fruit there is one would never hear of when just relying on what the supermarket offers
Ill NEVER buy supermarket fruit.. Not even Whole Foods.. I grow my own, and I try fruits that I cannot grow when I travel. Jared is lucky to have some good people supporting him that send him some amazing fresh fruit from around the world.
You show a big heart for your viewers by trying it again.
It may be genetics, my friend. Like some people feel cilantro tastes like soap. Maybe some people LOVE that fruit cause they're immune to its funk.
Cempedak sucks
@@roboticvenom1935 I couldn't tell you my opinion as I've never had it, but it kinda looks like offal. 😅😅
@@NecroBanana I tried it once in Thailand and it's just not a great fruit/flavor. There are hundreds of fruits, not all of them are good fruits(obviously)and it should stay that way.
Could be! I like to think it's an acquired taste though
@@WeirdExplorer Just like Durian... Super acquired taste..
We usually deep fry these suckers (cempedak fritters). I too never fond of raw cempedak. But fried ones are awesome. Provided that you nail down the frying batter right.
100%! Don't really like them raw but damn they are nice fried (though super unhealthy).
in the scale, i like how "4" is like:
"why are we still here? just to suffer?".
kk
Although I do like the more mild lemony yellow flesh cempedaks here in Vietnam. The king cempedak is probably my favorite variety. So funky, massive pods, intense sweetness. So filling. It's my favorite fruit ever
I wonder if it would make a good syrup? Put it on some pancakes
You have not even scratched the surface of the artocarpus genus... Pedalai, Kwai muk, lakoocha, keledang. all are amazing fruit I hope you can review at some point, especially the pedalai and keledang. You should also make a point of trying different jackfruit varieties, my personal favorites are j33 and amber
Yes! it's such an interesting genus to crack in to
Isn't that the genus that breadfruit is in?
@@WeirdExplorer also I believe that "king chempedak" is another name for Cheena, or what you get when you cross a chempedak and jackfruit, not a variety of pure chempedak which would explain why it has less of a funky flavour
@@WeirdExplorer Have 3 Kwai Muks in San Diego, supposed to be cold tolerant.
@@WeirdExplorer And don't forget the _Parautocarpus_ genus!
I got the King Cempedak bonus in a Year of the Durian box also and I LOVED it. I did a little Googling and learned that King Cempedak is actually a Jackfruit-Cempedak hybrid. That would explain why you liked it better than regular Cempedak!
No king cempedak is a cempedak variety. You're thinking of Cempejack which has more pointy pods rather than rounded and is less funky than cempedak
@@Austin.vanderweil exactly right.
I still need to try the cempejack
@@Austin.vanderweil Don't take it from me, read this Indonesian article (use Google to translate). I quote: "Cempedak king is a cross between jackfruit and cempedak which is also developing in Malaysia," said the alumnus of the University of Birmingham, England, it. The Dean of the Faculty of the University of Borneo, Dr Lutfi Bansir, said the same thing. Malaysia is one of the countries that intensively collects variants of Artocarpus sp and its relatives. Researchers in the country crossed a variety of high quality Artocarpus sp brooders. One of the crosses was Cempedak King. "The advantage is that the composition of male flowers and female flowers is ideal, so it is not difficult to produce full fruit nyamplung," said Lutfi. According to Greg, cempedak king is a jackfruit variant that is more dominant to cempedak. That is why the character of the taste and texture of fruit flesh like cempedak is soft and very sweet. However, in terms of fruit shape, it is inherited from jackfruit which tends to be large round." thehijau.com/dua-varian-cempedak-raja/
@@Austin.vanderweil and secondly, "Cempejack" is not a clone, it's a term that can be used to describe any hybrid of Cempedak and Jackfruit. So technically King Cempedak is a Cempejack, according to the article I referenced in my previous comment.
Making cempedak fritters or have it frozen is literally heaven 🙌
I like the funk scale I could already tell where it was headed😂😂
That funk scale is hilarious with the hey
When you said you had another thing to try, I was fully expecting the ketchup song to play lol
I really do love the James Brown funk metric
Hah! I was just watching that first cempedak video a day or so ago! And I was watching the videos before you liked durian. I really like when you revisit things like this. Keep on doing what you do, man. You're getting it right.
I love your content, keep up the great work. :)
A good Cempedak is the ultimate fruit experience !! It is Jackfruit's superior cousin. I think you had bad examples in the past. Same happens to many beginners with Durian, I say keep trying. The King of fruit for many reasons!
Would noni top the funk scale, or does that have a scale of its own? The vom meter.
Probably a vomit scale and it would be 10
it would be 10 on my "oh hell NO" scale
I've always wondered if we're actually "developing" our taste buds, or if we're destroying them to the point where even cempedak no longer phases them. Either way, maybe someday you'll actually be able to appreciate noni...
What we're developing are complex neural pathways. It takes about a dozen tries for a baby to become accustomed to a new and different flavor. I have no idea how many tries it takes for adults, but it took decades for mushrooms to click for me, so there's always potential! =)
deepfry it in tempura batter. absolute heaven.
I love fruit and so glad I found this fascinating channel. Love your content. So interesting!
4:02 was not excepting that . I was dealing with a customer with one headphone in and busted out laughing . Good shit
"My tastebuds are not quite there."
Exactly. Till the age of 25 I couldn’t eat jackfruits. They tasted horrible and I used to vomit after 7 or 8 pieces. Now I can eat entire Jackfruits. I think hormones affect how food tastes.
Interesting, what did they used to taste like to you? I’ve only had jackfruit once and it tasted sweet to me, a like a muted mango
@@foreveranon6940 They tasted the same. It's how my stomach handled it.
What I meant was the taste was the same but the smell was disgusting.
But soon the smell also changed.
interesting! i’m not sure if it’s because i was exposed to it at a young age but i’ve always loved jackfruit, though i haven’t had it in years
Every time I think of Cempedak it makes me think of some long lost moneky animal that is lost to science.
I rewatched the old cempedak video just a couple weeks ago and I've been hoping you would try it again. Seeing you fall in love with durian made me wonder if you would feel differently about cempedak now. This is something I really want to try.
I love cempedak!
My fiance is from Malaysia, whenever we visit there I have a hard time choosing between having cempedak or durian first. We found this incredible cafe in Penang that makes cempedak cakes.
From what I've observed, your first ones probably weren't ripe if you ate them after buying. This one was probably a little over ripe. They aren't usually sold ripe because once they start to ripen, they ripen very quickly!
Love watching your cempedak journey though, keep up these great vids!
I'm in Penang RIGHT NOW! Any chance you remember where the cempedak cake shop is?
@@kwhatten look up the Passion Heart Cafe... It's been 2 years, but I hope they're still operating! 😊
@@homebuck LOL, 50m from my fav Indonesian Nasi place (Padang Minang). Haven't gone but will. Thanks!
wow the king variety cempedak🤩🤩🤩🤩
by the way you can fried the cempedak not just the seed you can eat the whole thing when you fried it😆😆😆👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
For those who dont know Jackfruit is called Nangka in Malaysia, its totally different from Cempedak. We usually fry cempedak as fritters, and it tastes great.
I'd boil the seeds with a bit of salt rather than roasting em tho
Fried cempedak is really good :D But understandable if people don’t like the fruit of course!
My two favorite fruits are Chempedak and durian. Chempedak is really sweet, and the texture makes it feel like I'm eating bubblegum. Chempedak is also great coated in some batter and fried, the fried dough will temper the sweetness.
OMG the funk scale is amazing
you should try it cooked, put in at a simple flour batter, fry it, make it a fritter, it will blow your mind!
Love these!
I'd buy one from the fruit unkle and eat the whole thing the moment I got home.
(I'd skulk in the shadows, because these babies have an ODOR, and I was never sure how the neighbors would feel about such fragrant produce going into the building)
I love cempedak, I don't find it funky-smelling or funky-tasting at all, whereas I can at least acknowledge that people find Durian funky.
To me, cempedak tastes more like a smooshy jackfruit than any of the varietals of durian (and durians have a very wide range of smells, tastes and textures depending on cultivar).
Props to Weird Explorer for giving cempedak a third shot, I was just joking that he should try cempedak again, didn't think he would actually do it.
I appreciate you revisiting your previous tastes. :]
going back to revisit with more information & giving a second shot - love your channel Jared!
I tried jackfruit for the first time yesterday, I Love it sooo much! Like obsessed and wish it was a little stronger so now ima really excited to try this some time
I like how the funk scale effectively starts and ends with a smile
LOL James Brown on the funk scale... that had me LAUGHING. LoL thank you for this honest and humorous appraisal :P
I have found my happy place. This channel.
125g wheat flour, 50g rice flour, 50g corn starch. Prepare 500ml-750ml of water with 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix the flour first. Add the water slowly, it might varies according to the texture of the flour, it should be a little bit sticky. Put in refrigerator to cold it.
Heat the cooking oil (enough to submerge the fruit), bring up the cold flour mixture (should be resting for 2 hours in refrigerator), mix 3-4 teaspoon of hot oil into the mixture. Stir quickly, put the fruit into the flour mixture, make sure there is a thin layer of coating, deep fry it.
Viola, best cempedak.
New fruit to test in borneo it's called Matoa/Kristal sarawak
Maybe something as sweet and funky as cempedak belongs in a nice hot salsa or a chutney. For some reason I also imagine mixing it with horseradish and a honey mustard.
You have to try Cempedak Goreng. Or Fritters. It's our go to tea time snack.
Its easy to boil the seed to ensure is cook from roasting . If you roast later for few minutes for about. 10 mins
Dude congratulations on 250k subscribers I was watching your video like 8 years ago when you have 13k subs lol keep going to a million
Its very delicious actually
this in the village of my grandma is called wild jackfruit, I love it because of its funky flavor, lol!
Try the Desert Mistletoe (Phoradendron californicum), is a edible mistletoe (sorry my bad english kkkkkk)
YESSS funk scale is what we needed! lol. You should call it the funk factor, throw some fun alliteration in there
When I was a kid in West Africa, my favorite fruit was Saba. It gets called different things, but the scientific name is Saba senegalensis.
It is super sour when green and can get sweet(er) when ripened.
This really isn't related to this fruit, but a suggestion if you get the chance.
He'd probably get a better idea if you could provide like a link to more detailed information about the fruit you are talking about.
@@ANTSEMUT1 It's a common enough fruit across Africa that its scientific name is more helpful than links I could provide. For instance, it's known by half a dozen names, including Mabungo on the East Coast and Kabaa(what I knew it as) in Mandinka languages on the Western hump.
I lost it in the funkiness chart lmao
Omg and later there is a James Brown scream, holy shit.
🇲🇾. Malay muslim as i am Love cempedak.. thanks brO 👍👍😍
You can fried them, dip in batter and fried it. Deeeelicious
Notable mention! Yes, we never trash these seeds, we roasted them and eat it, double snacks!
Have you tried cemepedak fritters? It's one of the main ways of preparing them.
There needs to be a bootsy level funky. Love the editing lately.
I’m really glad you did this! I remember your first durian video and was thinking, “how is he going to do weird fruits without appreciating durian?” Then you warmed up to it…and that was exactly what came to mind when I saw cempedak pop up again!
It’s one of the fruits I really want to try, but I probably can’t afford to buy one here, so it’ll have to wait till I finally get myself to SE Asia…
Malaysian here. McDonald's now have cempedak sundae. Sweet as hell.
Awesome! I’m loving the new funk scale!!!
3 type Cempedak ….
cempedak madu(honey) orange flesh
Cempedak kampung(village) yellow
Cempedak hutan(jungle)small, has less than 6 seed
That one is cempedak madu(honey) oren flesh/pot ,big(mosty been hybric)too sweet..
He don't wanna hate cempedak for the shake of people who love it. How sweet of him 😃♥️
Im not a fan of the texture myself, but the seeds are my favourite lol. Always saved jackfruit and cempedak seeds for boiling as a bonus snack.
Always interesting ❤️
Tried a jackfruit because of your videos. It was good, but a bit sweet for me. Still need to try durian!
OMG!!! A new rank system! The funky rank! Love it! This should be a staple just like the sweet & sour rank!
Try the tree ripen and freshly picked Cempedak King. It taste better. 😀
Nice review. Please try this once again with medium ripe one. Fully ripped ones have too soft consistency and too sweet.
Love the Weird frut reviews👊 keep it up Jared
Aye!!! I'm in the top ten!!
Make sure to coat your knife with cooking oil before you cut the cempedak or jack fruit.rubbing the seed to your fingers will do the trick too.try it 😉
You gotta try batter-fried cempedak. Popular indonesian snack!
Ooooo that sounds amazing!!
@@thatoneasiankid8734 it's really good, but we usually only eat 2-4 at a time cus it's sweet as
Try coating it with flour and frying it! Fried cempedak is sold at roadside stalls in Malaysia sometimes. ❤️
Wonder if you tried the processed/cooked version, young jackfruit > gudeg, cempedak > fritters/bread jams
Love your channel! I have a question, I hope you can answer. Can you eat Aloe Vera?
You should try fried cempedak, dip it in batter & fry 😋
This almost sounds like a hostage video. Lol
I'm purchasing a local cempejack (cempedak×jack fruit cross) in the spring!
Have you ever had a Saw Palmetto berry? They taste like a funky cheese and bile imo. I've also heard there was once a soda made from the berries but it was discontinued in the '50s when, apparently, jello-encased shrimp meant people had even nastier things to waste their taste buds on. It's no mystery why its not on supermarket shelves but still it definitely qualifies as a "weird fruit".
You should try chempedak fritters. Really nice without the funky smell.
In general, Malaysians don’t eat jackfruit and durian seeds, but they do eat cempedak seeds (mostly roasted).
Try fried cempedak or boiled cempedak seed...👍🏻
Please give the Hyphaene thebaica fruit a try.
I eat cempedak for its seed. After eating the flesh, collect the seeds to boil in salted water. The seeds are tasty.
In Malaysia, both Nangka (Jackfruit) and Cempedak (Jackfruit) are called Jackfruit in English. Until your video I've only seen both fruits called Jackfruit in printed literature, spoken and online. Of course in Malay we have always had two different words for the two very different things: Nangka & Cempedak. I've always thought that they were the same species but different varieties (more like breeds). Didn't realise that they have different Latin names and so are two different species.
LOL James Brown= Funk scale of 10, this measurement is precise, extremely accurate and reliable.
Wondering if you had fried cempedak ala Pisang goreng style back when you were in Malaysia.....
What a slimy fruit. I enjoy eating jack fruit both as the ripe fruit and also unripe one used as a vegetable in cooking especially cooked with shrimps and coconut milk. Now does King Cempedak smell and taste like durian fruit?
BTW I'm a new sub and really enjoy your fruit excursions. 💯👍🙏😎
We deep-fry it with batter here in malaysia. It's rare to find people eat it as it is.
It depends on the funk; I like funky (wild, sour, etc) beers, I like black garlic, I dig funky cheeses, I appreciate funky-smoky scotch, I like durian, I can eat an entire jackfruit (I usually stop after half because I'm sensitive to myrtles and latex), but there are certain funks I just don't care for.
Pedelalai and Chempadek are two that I'm hoping to eventually try.
Wow, a fruit with James Brown level funk, now THAT'S a funky fruit
It's funny how some people label things they do not like as world's worst when a fair group of people likes it very much, like they are an authority on what should be how.
I'm strong on the CHEENA from Top Tropicals, a Jackfruit/Cempedak hybrid. Tree can be kept to 8', fruits low, tolerates frost, has a flavor intermediate between jackfruit and Cempedak, which should be just right, since jackfruit is a little mild, and cempedak a little too much. Supposed to come true from seed as well. Haven't got one yet, but will order from TT this summer for San Diego.
2-3 more generations more of breeding, we should have a good-flavored San Diego growable artocarpus hybrid.
That's awesome
funny, the other day my mom brought home a jackfruit (we live in the Caribbean and get lots of lovely tropical stuff) and it tasted really funky. It had that classic juicy fruit gum) taste .it tasted mostly like bananas and a bunch of other mild flavours I can't describe. but it also tasted a bit like onions and smelled a tiny bit like gasoline. this video is making me wonder if what I ate was a jackfruit or one of its relatives.
Have you tried the rare salmon berry? found in British Columbia
