It was 1982 and I was 20 years old at Coast Guard A school in Virginia. One night I was in a bar in Virginia Beach and this movie was playing. I had sailed 14's and 16's growing up in Santa Cruz after Jack O'neill took me sailing on a 16 as a 12 year old kid. After watching this movie, I knew I had to have an 18. As soon as I got home to Santa Cruz I bought one and had the time of my life sailing and racing that thing. What an amazing boat.
Allen -- THANK YOU! This video was engrained in my childhood. I must have watched it 1000 times (no joke). So glad to find it again. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting this vid. I had a hobie 16 and 18 in the 80’s and sailed Belmont many weekends in the summer. I remember this vid and trying the daggarboard towing. Hats off to these guys sailing in the surf.
Thank you. I have been looking for this film for years. It played at the local sailing shop when my dad and I sailed 14s and 16s back in early 80s. Hobie Days were the best. The end section with the 18 in Hawaii is still awe inspiring.
Aaaaah the golden years of sailing, there's just something magic about this. My god though they built the hobie 18 strong, I would never try wavejumping like that on my hobie getaway.. Great video!
I love this! I have a classic P-Cat with a Tornado rig and It's so great to be able to see the type of racing and sailing my father and grand father used to do.
Hobie 18--what a workhorse! Have had great times with up to 4 peeps onboard! OTOH would not single-hand one, as I don't think I could right it alone, even with a waterbag.
thank you very mutch for this video. i've been looking for this for many years because i've only got the vhs. Have you a better quality version of this video to send me? thank you very mutch
It would have been nice to see the wave jumping scenes at normal speed too - but putting the speed settings up to x2 does make it a bit more realistic - amazing air those guys were getting!
It was the same for me, i was looking for the DVD of it and finally found it on an american website a few month ago. I could arrange something for you, give me a personnel email for details.

That is the most 70s thing I have ever seen. The couple groovin' at about 11:10 are fantastic!
This is my "oh shit, I wish it was summer" flick. The quintessential Hobie 18 movie
Thanks for sharing the video. I have that one just on VHS! ;-)

Thank you for this....brings back memories of a life of Hobie sailing.....would be interested in receiving a DVD too.
Remember youngins, this was pre-drone days... Warren had to spend some serious coin on *helicopter* (and pilot) time!
I was shown this at sailing summer camp when I was 12. That sand sailing scene!
Mythique ! Thanks a lot i've been looking for this video many years ago and sure it was the seed of my sailing passion.
