Really like your channel I made a forge from an old beer keg it's fairly large but I can cut down in the space by adding fire brick I lined the inside of forge with vermiculite Sand and cement works great and like you I didn't like using the kaywool or ceramic blanket the floor of the forge is lined with fire brick holds the heat great good luck

That forge will probably be good enough to weld damascus in. My forge is nothing but firebrick from Atwood's and a little Venturi I built I run the propane at ~4 psi and can weld carbon steel in it never been able to manage low carbon stuff but just something I thought I'd share

John, one of the reasons I love your channel is the way you take time to breakdown the subject, and the steps it will take to achieve the end product. This is why I keep saying that you are a great teacher. Not everybody can do the breakdown, they just do it. Not realizing why. Keep doing what you are doing.

    Happy Father’s Day my friend
Another good one John. I just finished my gas forge made it out of 10’’ x 10’’ square tube 24 inches long. brick floor and two inches for kao wool on the sides and top covered that with castable and then covered that with tci100 also made two doors out of brick very easy to remove I still am curing it haven’t heated it up to welding heat yet. Get to forging heat in less them a minute. Pretty good
Not too bad for my first one.
You are correct about doing your homework I been planing this for a few months and reading everything I can find
Ok. Thx again have a great Father’s Day.....Paul..

When you cut the base insulation board you cut to the center of the outline impression. You needed to cut to the inside of the impression.

that is a valid concern in a past job we field oure tanks for a 500 gallon tank to use to heat tar and some of the people i worked with would walk up smokeing while i was filling the tank it was a good day to be the boss and words was said people cryed but i didnt go boom (for people who dont know to fill a 5 gallon tank you have to vent gas from it to keep it from building to much pressure)

I am surprised to see you bought a burner when there are some great ones out there to build on the cheap. I do REALLY like this one though. You have a very well thought out design here bud. Easily serviced and should work just fine for what you need from it.I have always said a welders best friends are a grinder and flat black paint. Both will hide a multitude of sins eh, LOL. This is a sweet and practical piece my friend. I await to see it finished and put to work. One more great show bud !

I have made burners in the past and fine the precision in some of the better quality burners worth the price. Not to mention the time saved.

Yeah hybridburners make top notch highly refined and tuned burners..especially his trex burner will get a chamber 4 inches in diameter and roughly 12 inches deep or so to forge welding temps in like 5 minutes or so..

Any information on the cost to run a charcoal forge vs. cost to run a propane forge? I feel the charcoal forge is way cheaper to build but more expensive to run and the propane is perhaps the opposite? I'm about to build my first one. Thanks for all your tips, your channel is extremely helpful!

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  2 года назад +1

It all depends on what you have available in your area. If you have the time and materials to make your own charcoal, its very inexpensive to run. But if you have to buy charcoal from the local home center at $20+ per bag, propane is probably cheaper to run.

The makers of ITC-100 now sell it to the individual where last year they didn't. They sell it for about 20 dollars less than any other place I looked at and you can find discounts on their FaceBook page for products. Also you can buy ceramic wool for a fraction of the price of online prices, if you have a local industrial refractory seller. I bought 3 feet x 20 feet of ceramic wool rated at 2600 degrees for about 60 bucks. and 24 high temp bricks for 30 bucks. Just google "Refractory cement" and something might come up. Also check your local pottery supplier for any thing, they are experts at making high temp ovens and I got some amamzing refractory from mine for only 20 bucks, it was as good as ITC-100 and was their own special mix of ceramics and silicion.

I’m now researching ribbon burner. Why don’t you build one?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  6 лет назад

I may at some point. But when you spend 12 hours a day and still can't catch up, its hard to take the extra time a big project like that would take. Even a simple 2 day forge build like this one is more time than I should spend

Some brick suppliers, places that sell parts for ceramics kiln, look for refractory in your area or many different dealers online

Hello :) I like you because you are humble for lack of a better word !
You tell the truth in as far as you are willing to :)'
You likely know a bit more than you say !
I myself am very strongly opinionated !
I try to base my opinions on facts !
    But !
I find most things can be very complicated
A person could get lost in the physics !
Physics of most anything can and mostly is very complicated !
Just depends on how deep you want to go !
    Nevertheless :)
I like and appreciate your humbleness and straightforwardness
Knowing sound limits is very important !
I think the most intelligent people realize that fact
    The less do not !

I cringe when I see you touch that KAO wool !
I know what that stuff is :(
I welded on boilers they were preheated and insulated with that stuff !
It has the ability to drive a man completely insane if a wad of that stuff goes down the back of your shirt !
Handle that stuff with care brother :)
