@@whitekongbaby1 l never heard that? Saw an interview with a guy from MA's old band Snake.. and he said Mike was always a good bass player and when he hooked up with Eddie and Alex, they blew everyone away from day one..
This is one the best freakin' songs in the entire collection of all the awesome songs in the VH catalog. The guitar-playing is amazing! Yes, it's David Lee Roth singing, dude...it's the first album and Good Lord, bro...he doesn't sound nothing like Sammy Hagar! Just to clear up any confusion, it's DL Roth on the first six albums. Keep Rockin' Jay!
Michael Anthony's vocal harmonies get mentioned as that ONE little ingredient that gave VH their sound. I certainty agree, but his bass playing and Alex's drumming deserve every bit the attention that any other aspect of their sound gets.
Great to hear this again, thanks Jay. I forgot how dazzling Eddie is on this. Just incredible the virtuosity we saw in him on this, their first album. It was pretty much a revelation at that time. Perfect description: energy, and lots of it. My respect for them, especially Eddie, has grown over the years.
Vh's Live performance energy cannot be overstated. The album's, no matter how well engineered, recorded, produced, etc, never sound like the real deal. It's a completely different ballgame from VH in your earphones to VH thumping your spine loose from 150 yards away outdoors. Their live music is like some beautiful monster let loose from the confines of a measly boom box and shot out of a proper cannon straight through your skeleton. It's an experience, for sure. I'm so glad I got to see them when I did.
Just do the entire 1st album! It changed Rock music. It was ahead of its time. Van Halen 1 is the Album. They are the music to my teens! I was blessed to live when Eddie Van Halen made his mark! RIP Eddie.
That first album was amazing and innovative. David Lee Roth was the singer for the first several albums. Had the greatest cat calls ever (oowww). Was later replaced by Sammy Hagar. Some people would call it van Hagar, didn't care for that version as much :)
Man you have some many van halen songs to react to. Some of my favorites are. I'll wait, Poundcake, Right now, Dreams, Humans being, Finish what ya started, Black n blue. And so many more. Enjoy my friend.
The timing on this track was amazing! Many guitarist try to play I'm the One but can't get the sweeping down! Eddie was special!! Check out Van Halens song 5150 Good reaction man.
David Lee Roth Van Halen is the only Van Halen for me. This is the bomb! I saw them live about 20 times in the early 80's. Nothin like a David Lee Roth VH concert.
Since you're a Diamond Dave fan, I think you'll like this: I was fortunate enough to meet him during the Fair Warning tour stop in Phoenix. My buddy and I sat around the pool with Dave at the Hyatt Regency all day long pounding down Heinekens. We were the only guys the roadies/security would let hang out with him so literally, it was just us and Dave! He was totally cool and we had a blast shootin' the shit with him. He gave us tickets and backstage passes to the show!
I agree. Sammy is a great singer but it's just not Van Halen without Dave. Dave had a certain soulful way of singing - very R&B-ish, he even sounds like Janis Joplin at times which fit perfectly with Eddie's amazing guitar rhythms - the perfect match. The original VH lineup chemistry was one of a kind.
I've been to over 120 concerts and there was NOTHING like seeing Van Halen live. Nothing in the same ballpark. Nobody had the energy or the FUN. The vibe at a VH show was nothing but uplifting. Eddie scissor kicking and knee-sliding across the stage while playing the most impossible licks at light speed and never missing a single note, all while flashing that shit eating grin. And, the volume....your bones were vibrating for three days afterward. It was a moment of human perfection.
Whew !!! That was close...I knew you would come thru on Van Halen Mondays. More songs off this album- Feel Your Love Tonight, Little Dreamer, Jamie’s Cryin,...this Album is top 5 all time on my list along with Back in Black, Boston, The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.
"Feel Your Love"... Harmonies..... Michael Anthony again... It was rumored they used samples of his vox when they toured without him.... And the album... Done in about 3 weeks.
What you are describing with the sound is called "balance".......the reason for that is because the Van Halen brothers (Eddie and Alex) were originally taught as classical pianists when they were little kids......so they undoubtedly understood the musical pyramid. Then you add in the great production talent of Ted Templeman and you get what you hear!
I saw Van Halen at the "US" festival in Glen Helen Park, San Bernadino, CA...1983. The crowd, 300K large and with all the top "metal' bands of the time. And, Van Halen managed to steal the show even with all that talent. The concert is avail. on RUclips. To give Sammy his props., listen to "In and Out" live from "Right Here, Right Now" link: ruclips.net/video/SnRGJvItBaU/видео.html
What is one of the very best things about the original lineup music is you can listen 2 or 3 or 4 times and just pay attention to one player and be amazed. For instance when you noticed the killer descending part during the bridges, you may have missed Alex's drums at the end of them, just stellar stuff.
If there was ever a debut album from a band who was starving, driven and was putting it all on the line to make it,it's this one. And I saw them live in 1984 (their last tour with David Lee Roth) and I can confirm to you that yes, their music was killer on record, but the live shows were FREAKING EPIC! They were always sold out (how I missed the Fair Warning tour). Their live concerts were practically a party. I consider myself blessed to have personally witnessed Eddie Van Halen play live.
I remember when the debut Van Halen came out in 1978 ( I was in high school).. it had all guitarists saying WTF ... who is the guitarist & who are these guys ? This album still holds it's own today. There is not a bad song on it, every track is a classic.
My gut is telling me that you are a musician yourself. You've got a lot of insight into musical construction and theory. Your appreciation of the wizardry that was Eddie Van Halen doesn't just come to a casual listener, I'm just curious as to your musical background, and what instruments you play yourself. Either way, I've been digging on your channel and content. I'm glad you're enjoying the trip down the Van Halen rabbit hole, because I sure have been having fun going along for the ride with you! You've gained a new subscriber here bro! Keep up the great work, and thanks for honoring the legend after his untimely passing, and helping to keep his music alive. BTW.. his son Wolfgang just released his first track from his upcoming solo album. The song is called "Distance" and it's a beautiful tribute to his father Eddie. The video is awesome and Wolfgang ( or Wolfie, as we know him) did EVERYTHING on the record. ... guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. He's definitely a chip off the old block, and inherited his dad and uncle's talent. It's without a doubt worth hearing. The video is here on RUclips, you should check it out! As always, Peace and love from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A!
Some suggestions of their next few Albums- Beautiful Girls,, Unchained, Cathederal followed by Secrets, Little Guitars with intro...Keep those Van Halen Monday’s coming !!!
One of the seemingly infinite great qualities about VH is the re-listenability of these songs as you can replay and listen to just Edward, or just Mikey, Alex or Dave. Or the Harmonies. Then revisit the song as a whole. There are only a few bands, whose songs are this cool, that can do that. Great review as always my man!
Jay Rah Visions: I recommend the "Mean Streets" album for Van Halen. Mean Streets (the song and the album) are gritty and dark - you know, for Van Halen. I love it.
And if you really want to hear another side of them, check out Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now. Eddie is on acoustic and his dad is playing clarinet.
In a similar vein: "Finish What Ya Started," featuring Ed on a Strat plugged straight into the mixer with no effects, and Alex on snare, kick, and hi-hat, no crashes or ride. Stripped absolutely to the bone production-wise, and still fantastic.
I can play all eds stuff PERFECTLY, BUT I CANNOT GET THE SWING OF THAT FICKING RYTHEM TO SAVE MY LIFE. Also, you are an example of music transcending race, keep up the work, and clearly you have to be some kind of musician.
you might want to hear JUST the guitar someday. search van halen isolated guitar there is some awesome stuff you hear when the other tracks are stripped out. bass drum and vocals are also out there and easy to find
Just subscribed to your channel, love your reactions. I hone in on the bass a lot as well. Don't know if you know who George Porter is...but, if you wanna lose your mind over a bass line, take a listen to Government Mule..featuring George in the live performance of Mule. Warren's fantastic guitar complimented by one of the nastiest basslines I've ever heard. Would love to see your face!
Yeah, great one!! Stick to David Lee Roth era for a bit more, try to capture the overall VH sound up until the 1984 album (the one with Jump, Panama etc). After that, make the switch to Sammy Hagar era. That way you will also feel the difference "we" had to cope with back then. Forget the negative comments about Hagar. Of course he was different than DLR but they definitely had some magic tunes with Hagar upfront. The Hagar period starts in 1986 with the 5150 album and the first 3 albums with him are absolutely great. 5150, OU812 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (F.U.C.K.)
Such an all around great band. Everything just melded together perfectly. I got to see Van Hagar and you are correct, their shows were chock full o crazy. Good stuff man! Please check out something a bit different from them. Little Guitars, Secrets, some Van Hagar- official video for Poundcake, Right Now, or Dreams.
Top Jimmy off 1984 has insane guitar work. If you ever check out any Van Hagar, Poundcake is well written, who else uses a power drill on their guitar?! Also Judgement Day, both off of F.U.C.K. album. Van Hagar does have a different vibe but it is more mature. Rock on

This is what solidified VH in the lexicon of guitar... other than Eruption, we didn't know WHAT the fuck he was doing. It sounded like a keyboard....
