Not gonna lie, I'm super nervous about this one. It's a new format I want to try with how I analyze culture in media. More emphasis on the culture, history, and mythology I love and using anime/gaming to sprinkle highlights. If you really liked it, please consider sharing. It is the best way to help things like this grow!

My first introduction to the Tengu was the old Power Rangers movie. Imagine my surprise when I learned they're not just big birds, but winged old guys with hot dog noses.
Mind blown 🤯 I was just a kid back then.
My first introduction to them was one of Dan Hibiki's costumes in Street Fighter 4 where he has a green gi and tengu mask.
"hot DOG noses"... So THAT'S why they're heavenly dogs

There's Tengu in D&D now too! One of my characters is a Tengu Oracle.
TheSilverVixen Are you talking about the aarakocra or the kenku?
@@RoninTheCrusaderPlayed a Tengu Alchemist in Pathfinder once, picked Tengu for the sole reason of "Dude, my FACE is my Plauge Doctor mask!"
Ah yes, the Kenku. I still wanna roll one.
@@RoninTheCrusader pathfinder is very rule heavy, it'll basically tell you that you can flat ignore the rules you don't like and you can but the system can be cumbersome starting out. Personally, I love having rules for every possible thing I can think of if I want and the freedom to just not care if the group thinks some rules aren't worth it and it's easily the best system i know of for my tastes (now I just need to find a group...) but I think a lot of people don't like it much.

@@CoolVictor2002
So... In the video, the Goombah gave examples of Tengu in "US homegrown popular culture" and included 'Power Rangers' and 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' as examples....
This post is a sarcastic swipe at Goombah... I'm sure you understand why...
Strictly speaking Power Rangers IS American, it's made from tokusentai but it's not at all the same thing. And Yu-Gi-Oh, he's likely talking about Capsule Monsters, a mini series that took place between seasons 4 and 5 that was made and aired exclusively in America. Vaguely worded, but he's not wrong either.
"The Tale of the Heike" is a funny title to me for a book that explains myths, which are explanations of how things are the way they are, because in arabic, the /phrase/ "heike", saying it like the way you said it, is used to basically say "it just is" or "because i said so"

I think
I just randomly had the thought that the Chozo of the Metroid series are a race of space tengu. It’s mostly surface level but I drew the parallel after hearing the story about Yoshitsune and the Kurama Tengu.
I'd like to think that the Chozo are actually based on Bird Headed-Avian Deities from Egyptian Mythology: Horus, Thoth, and Ra. For example, Chozodia's architecture and artwork resembles Egypts'.
Enforcer Ridley oh yeah definitely.
@@enforcerridley158 That is a good comparison! I feel it could be both: pulling inspiration for Samus and the Chozo from Yoshitsune and the Kurama, while using Egyptian symbolism for the Chozo's culture.
1:48 I did not expect to hear Tokyo Afterschool Summoners being mentioned
right!
imagine he start talking about Housamo Husbandos Lovecraft Origins next
Yo I'd be down for a vid about Tsathoggua 💙
To be fair, Power Ranger is an adaptation Super Sentai, a japanese Tokusatsu series. And Yu-Gi-Oh was originally from Japan as well
Western Echidna both were heavily altered for English audiences, especially Mighty Morphing Power Rangers where season 2 or 3 was 70% original because they wanted to keep the look of the rangers a bit longer.
@@Fanatic_Foremem but the Tengas and the monster shown from Ninja Steel were originally from their respective Sentai seasons. It's not like the Battlizers, the Titanium Ranger, or the Spirit Rangers. Which were original American creations. The tengas were just straight up called Tengus in Kakuranger. And in Ninninger the Tengu monster was not a pun name like Badpipes. It's just called Yokai Tengu
Oh crap, I was absolutely hyped to see Touhou, but Housamo?
Literally the best video.
Right! That really was a nice surprise. Also this video actually help explain that one part of the hot spring quest where you have to go through the Tengu Forest and fight Hogen. I had no clue on what was going on in that fight with the whole sword technique thing he was talking about, but hey now I know the historical/mythological significance of it.
I hope the bad side of the Touhou fandom doesn't start reeee-ing about how he lumped it in with anime. We all know what he means, guys. It's okay. Being defensive means he'll take longer to cover Gensokyo's version of youkai.
that funny, for a split second, I've see the same paradox as a plague doctor. not only the long nose/crow archetype, but the thing about knowledge and diseases spreading... there are many parallels to draw in some way and a lots of inaccuracy, so i'm not gonna say that plague doctor and Tengu are the same, but really funny to think...
I think that may just be one of thosr funny coincidences, but I can see what you're saying 👍
That could be a really cool idea for a fantasy crossover.

the longer i watch this video, the more i feel like Jim Henson got part of the inspiration for Skeksis from Tengu.
(i could be wrong, of course, but i am noticing several parallels)
I always thought of them as more like vampires, with all the drinking of essence
As far as I'm aware Henson never adopted much from Japanese culture into his works. It's possible but it seems unlikely that this one thing (in a world as unique as the dark crystal's) would be derived from Japanese mythology.
It's because they are bird like.
I see, so it came from China "heavenly dog" as they call it. That's interesting actually.

I remember being read a book called "A Tale of Two Tengu" waaaay back in elementary school.
Something I've seen listed as a trope is the "Red Oni/Blue Oni" thing. What's all that about? What are it's origins?
You mean why there are red/blue pairs? Or about oni in general? I try to pay attention to stuff like this and i have yet to come across any specific historical reason for that pairing though it is thought to be attributed to the duality of personalitys and i only seen it in anime and manga. Red=hot headed Blue= calm that kind of thing. There are green ones you some times see too. Hope that helps some

I love how you pointed out animes and video games at the start of the video. I think it will deffinetly attract newer audience like me and keep us on board
Years ago I read an analysis of some early Tengu myths and thought they basically were an attempt to just describe Jewish people.
As a Jew myself, I found that hilarious. It's been a long time and I've long since lost the link but it basically boiled down to: "Tengu are wise reclusive sages that live high in the mountains have non-asian skin tones, huge noses, and magical wisdom from previous generations. They must be Jews." The hats actually probably help his case, looking like someone saw a Yalmulke and a Tefilah and conflated them.
