Some very old schools of bujutsu teach the real history of the Tengu. The legend of the Tengu existed in China long before it came to Japan. If you look at the history record the Tengu will be mentioned in relation to Shugendo buddhism and the yamabushi, but its obscure and they dont really know why they are related. The Tengu were actually real people. They were samurai and ronin living in the deep in the mountains. When people would tresspass onto thier property at night they would put on the scary oni mask and put on a very intimidating show to scare away the intruders. One technique they would use is a pyrotechnics show by swinging around slow burning combustable materials that would emit balls of fire and lots of colors. I once was part of a bujutsu school that taught these pyrotechnics. We never learned them because sensei said they were pointless in modern times. The ancient samurai created a way to infiltrate fortresses surrounded by walls by using a springboard and a small hang glider to hop and glide over the walls. This is where the myth came from that they were half bird. These samurai were playing on existing superstitious beleifs of the people of Japan. Now the Shugendo link is a long story that goes into the origins of bujutsu and the samurai. No one really seems to care when I tell this history so I wont bother, but now you can understand where the belief that Tengu were expert swordmen came from.
@@ZENUPYourLife-withSanaSakura Thank you for the video, ma'am. Sorry I'm new to your channel and I don't know your name. Ever notice in the ancient depictions of Tengu always had small wings and never a the full wingspan of a real bird? Honestly looks too small to work very well so I imagine it just made the landing from jumping over the wall have less impact on the legs. These Tengu legends were born of the Iga samurai. I can explain the real origin of the samurai, ninja and the direct links to the Tendai sect of Shugendo Mikkyo Buddhism. There are few people in Japan that have this historical knowledge and they usually keep quiet about it. If you know a practitioner of a very old bujutsu ryuha used in the Sengoku era and earlier (Katchu bujutsu) you can ask them to confirm this.

I believe the Tengu are tests against monks and those considering themselves of virtue and praise, which Tengu challenge through practical application of deception and that they will turn those into other Tengu if this is only an arrogant mask the human is using to hide their true character.
Ushiwaka-maru received a "tora no maki" from the Kurama Tengu after finishing his training. It would mean "Tora Scroll". Sounds an awful lot like the Torah, which is traditionally stored as a scroll. The tokin is literally the tefilin worn by rabbis, and there is a drawing of 7 tengus under the Bishamonten, I think it was called Iwaya-bo, and they seem to be portrayed in a way that's used to draw the face of foreigners. In Judaism, mountains are often thought of as sacred and the priests often train themselves there. Also, some time in 722 B.C., a population of jews had left the middle east and wandered through the Silk Road, some settled down in China in the Kaifeng area. And I think in the Kojiki and Nihongi it was mentioned that the emperor of that time also invited around 30,000 chinese jews to settle in japan. The Hata clan's symbol is also literally identical to the Star of David. The most clear influence is probably the Shinto sect at Mt. Moriya, specifically the Mi-isaku-chi (local name) or the Ontohsai festival. Interestingly enough, the first jewish diasporas in China appeared around the 8th century, which is around the same time the tengu/tiangou myth began.
This is a good example of correlation is not causation. Tora no Maki is the tiger scroll as Tora is the Japanese word for tiger. There are other very ancient bujutsu schools that also have a Tora no Maki. That's because the Tengu were actually samurai and this Tora no Maki is actually a real curriculum of bujutsu. The similarities to Judaism are purely coincidental. The confusion comes from lack of knowledge of the samurai military strategy (martial arts). This is because these schools have always been taught in secret. Even to this day the secrecy is still the same.
