- Hi guys! So this is my own take on the story seen in Blood, Sweat & Tears MV of BTS. So the main thing is that the story based on the book Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth by Hermann Hesse.
My theory is not flawless but I did my best! XD It's also my first time making a theory video so it is a sloppy edit but I hope you guys like it! :)

(I originally did it for a class and I just wanted to share it to the fandom :D )
clarowan I'm not really buying the statue being Abraxas but everything else was ok
Lol it's fine, it's just a theory for my mind to cope with the puzzles BTS keeps dishing out. Haha
And now it’s going to help me with my English presentation THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I know I'm kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to stream new series online ?
@Carson Alijah Lately I have been using flixzone. Just search on google for it :)

Demian is a amazing book and for me everybody should read it
Where can I read it tho
kpoplover 0619 it's there in wattpad. That'swhere I read it from.
Andrea Edison oh thank you. I will go read it right now
Zdety wHeRe cAn I rEaD iT?
I WILL
I know there are a bunch of theories out there but there's a reason they quote Demian so congratulations to you for actually getting it.
Athenathe SheWolf oh wow, thank you! ❤
A lot of that is correct and I'd like to add to it. The following is in my opinion, so idk if it's true. The swinging/flying "backwards" symbolises The Fall of Icarus. Notice also the painting Landscape Of The Fall Of Icarus in the background when V jumps from the balcony. BTS sitting at the dinner table is referencing The Last Supper (before Crucifixion) so maybe they're trying to put in the idea of sacrifice. Also, the apple in itself represents sin in a Biblical sense. The kissing also represents accepting of evil by someone innocent. The white flowers reflecting as gayfeathers probably means something cause certain flowers symbolise certain meanings. I missed a few things here so feel free to add. I could also be wrong so feel free to correct me, I wanna get the concept right :)
LOVE Freiheit ahhhh IKR I have a little bit of the same concept but I think V was the fallen angel in this jumping off the balcony also they said in the beginning he was wearing pajamas well that probably says he stands out like he wants to be the best like in the bible lucifer wanted to be greater than God but God kicked him out of heaven and he became his own King which is considered V falling off the balcony idk just me 😅
No offense, but I don't think an association with the Bible's Lucifer makes much sense in Wings
Sundus Kashif yep, you're also right, Jungkook represents Icarus while Rapmon represents Daedalus, why? Because u noticed at Jungkook with his swing? And the way he positioned himself? Its like the scene where Icarus is falling because of his wings was melted, and also the scene where his swing was gone and there was feathers in his background? It represents Icarus falling from an ocean and was killed because of drowning. Y'all see Rapmon holding a candle with match? Candle is a wax, while the match is the sun, and you noticed that there's a green wax on Jk's index fingers then he licked it? It means, because of his stubbornness, he didn't obey his father's instruction and he want to follow his curiosity.
Next is the table scene.
You all notice that the scene was like the "last supper"? But then you all noticed there apples in their plates? It means the apple represent Eve's sin, you remember, God tell Eve not to eat the apple of the snake's tree? But she did eat it because of temptation. Well, back to them, so its like they're all ready to take their sin by eating the apple, as they raised there... Wine glasses, but then, you noticed Jin looked behind? That means, he is confused if he will make a sin or not. And you also noticed V jumps off the cliff(?) (dunno what to call that but whatever) it means Icarus takes the risk of flying high in the sky, even if it means, he will die... And lastly the balloon scene and also Jin kissing a statue.
Jin let go of the balloon. It means he will accept the sin, and he is not innocent anymore, like covering his face, when the hands was being removed it means he is seeing the sin.
Next is Jin kissing the statue
Aaaand, now Jin kiss the statue, the statue represents Demian, when if a person seal a contract to a demon, they will shake their hands and kiss. But, why did Jin kisses the statue? Because like what i've said, V/Demian, is the statue, you noticed when Jin kisses the statue, V's wings are gone? It mean Jin seal the contract between them.
Sorry for my bad English okay? Hehe forgive me
@@yeonjaesshi_ JK & RM as Icarus and Daedalus is also represented in the first scene (RM reads a book and JK is beside him, reading with him)
The concept is that BigHit's production team aRE ART AND LITERATURE-LOVING CREATIVE GENIUSES, THAT'S IT
Omg, Rap Mon's prounciation....
One of them mentioned in a video that in Korean, words are pronounced as they are spelt but in English it’s different because words like “intriguing” have silent letters.
its adorable
Alright I wanted to do more research before I took a crack at it but my interruptation of the video and understanding of the symbolism is this:
So it's been confirmed that the video is influenced by Demian and so that I am not arguing nor anything in this video. I think this theory is spot on but I just wanted to add to it.
This was my first BTS video actually so I went into it with no context behind it but one image that was really impactful for me was the last. That being said the second thing I noticed was the greek mythology influence all over the video.
I read up on Demian and the God Abraxas which RM referred to in the reaction video. All these things go back to Gnostic theory which deals a lot with dualism and the concept of good and evil coexisting.
I went back and watched the mini films which all deal with this concept. Jimin's Lie is about him struggling with expectations as an idol, stigma is clearly about the stigma of our past actions, Jhope's is about coping, RMs is about connections/isolation, Sugas is about being distracted from one's purpose or true passion, Jungkook's is about fear. All these things are illusions. Jhope is comforted not by the massive amounts of medication but by a peaceful painting. V killed his father, but shows love and compassion to an innocent animal showing he isn't a monster.
So in Blood, Sweat, and Tears I think we see their feelings about fame through a philosophical lens.
Jin is viewed as a narcissist but public scructiny can destruct anyones self image.
V was called an "alien" and "from another world." Much like an angel. I think him jumping off the ledge is symbolic of his seemingly lack of fear of fame.
RM is surrounded by books and appears over flowing with confidence and charm. Some of his critics call him arrogant.
Jungkook is called "the golden maknae" and is seen floating through the video.
Suga is in a plain room, Jimin is presenting him with an apple much like in the novel. The innocent one trying to impress the not innocent one. We also see him playing again and we know Suga is passionate about the quality of the music.
JHope who makes no secret about missing his family and the strain being an idol has on his ability to see them, is still hooefully. And an angel.
Jimin is not only blind, he's bound to his surroundings.
The song comes off as a love song but the phrase blood, sweat, and tears is about sacrafice and this video is about that.
V covering Jin's eyes is saying ignore all the horrors of fame and do it anyway. Jin kissing the statue and everything that follows is them beginning their journey to fame.
It's saying we know what we are giving up and we know that in order to have something wonderful we have to endure some awful things and exceptthe dualism in our own nature as well as the dualism in our world.
I think the Ferry incident changed them too because they went from the p.o.v. children believing that adults alway had their best interest at heart when the truth is the world is full of corrupt people. Innocence died and corruption lived and such is life unfortunately.
Tracy Runnels this is amazing omg! I recently just found bts and never realised how much meaning and creative effort really went into everything they do! I’m just about to start a degree in philosophy and things like this really intrigue me!!

when every music videos of BTS are considered masterpiece..its amazing...man..its amazing.
Bro this is hella deep
True
actually v is Franz kromer who is sinclairs bully ..... suga is demian who also is pistorious. you can see that in his short film stigma that v has a dysfunctional household like in the book kromer has.
the apple represents the first sin that ian sinclair has commited which is the first lie [jimin] that has brought him anxiety and fear and lured him into the world of evil compared to his life of white and pureness.
I also thought of how Suga could be Demian, especially since V's role was supposed to be Suga's but since he couldn't act, V volunteered for the role. But as I was making the video, I decided that Suga is Franz Kromer. The deciding factor was the scene of Suga holding a blindfold while facing Jimin who was holding an apple. For me, it was a representation of Sinclair's first interaction with the darkness which was caused by Franz Kromer.
All of BTS acted as several different characters. Sometimes they play the same.
All of the members have their own role.Jungkook is the first phase of sinclair's life and Jin represents the final phase.J-hope is Demian, you can even see his circle which in written on it the name Eva.Eva is Demian's mother.Well now Pistorius is sometimes RM or Suga. You have to read the book if you want to understand more than this.IT'a 1000% true.
i don't remember kromer having a broken home?
WHY KROMER IS V.
OMFG I just finished Demian and I really needed this explanation-- thank you! It all makes so much more sense now, and I now appreciate the video on a whole other level
THIS WAS AMAZING. I don't have anything to say. this vid really show me the connection between Demain and Bs&t. GOSH that story!!!
I love this video. Demian is my favorite book forever and you did an excelent analysis of this video.
Greetings!
Thank you!! It was my first time doing this so I was worried that my thoughts would be too disorganized. Haha
Thanks for making this! I was really struggling to put everything together and this helped connect all the dots :D Awesome job!
Autumn Scruggs thanks! I was worried I wouldn't be able to put my thoughts properly in the video. 😁
wow goosebumps, hands down to BigHit for researching such a intriguing stuff. I did nit know that to make this mc took tremendous from idea, finding material, set up the symbols in the mv, awesome
I love BigHit so much. Their production team does so much research on art history and literary & art references. They did it with Blood, Sweat, and Tears and they've done it again with TXT's Nap of A Star. I just wish more people would appreciate not just their talents and skills, but their love for art and depth in their music videos as well
My copy of Demian has such different translations that when the teasers first started dropping I didn't quite recognise that they were extracts from it!
YT - Rhianna is it the entire book or just an extract ?
Pretty sure it's the entire book. Haven't read it all yet, don't have the time.
Thank you !
lol true.. i thought it was a different book.
I’ve been reading Demian and thought of so many parallels between the book and BST MV. Glad someone made this video so I can feel validated.
THIS WAS A REALLY GOOD EXPLANATION!!! I’ve read the book and I always tell my friends how it relates to the music video(s) but this did an even better job and I’m happy that my notes and how I think the book related to the videos are also the same as someone else!
Whoever made this video ... you are simply a genius!
OMFGGGG THIS MAKES SO MUCH MORE FRIGGING SENSE! OMGGGG WOWWW
Omg just finished reading Demian and finally everything about this mv makes sense thank you
the music video of it makes me so crazy to realize what's the meaning behind all of it. thanks sooooo much! finally understands it
Queen Grande thank you also for taking the time to watch it! :)
Thank you for this explanation. I understand way better now. I watched the MV with my grandmother and I wanted her to try and understand the meaning behind BTS's MV's and music! So again thank you from me and her :)
I love the novel and this is on point analysis. ❤️Truly this mv is based on Demian. Thanks for sharing ur view point.
Thank you for the explanation . This video inspired me to read Demian. I was really curious about bs&t from the time I saw the mv. And now I am working on a reserch paper on this topic for my academics. 💜🌻
you missed the part where suga played a piece from the organ, the piece is actually the same one which pistorius played for sinclair, buxtehude's passacaglia.
Wow, very nicely theorized, I love the work you've made!! Thanks for sharing, it was very explaining :O
Whoever makes BTS MVs really wants to make my brain explodeeee 😂
I just finished reading Demian and I loved learning about all their references
omg you deserve way more subscribers this made it clearer to me
thank you so much
THANK YOU SO MUCH ! now i'm just thinking my whole life before watching this vid was a lie xD
Thank you for making this! (: I couldn't reach the book myself, so I'm thankful for this video! (:

Andreea Cristina Scutareanu thank you for watching! :)
I haven't read the book yet and I have pondered over what the MV wanted to convey and I think you just hit the nail on the head... 😄
stephanie starleaf I just read some parts of the book so I have a feeling mine's not a complete theory/explanation. But thank you! :)
Thank you so much for making this!! Blood sweat and tears makes so much more sense after i watched this! :)❤️👍
NICE VIDEO. ONE OF THE BEST I'VE SEEN
Thank you!
it's hard to place names on everyone but lemme try and get this straight...
-good/innocent: Jin,Jungkook,Jimin
-bad/temptation: suga, v, hobi
rapmon?
rap mon is just.....in the middle? idk but my bias (rap mon) aint in hell or heaven tho xD
i think it's Suga-Jimin; JK-Rapmon (Icarus); Hobi-V; V---will tempt Jin in falling into sin and losing his innocence
RM - narrator
SWEET JESUS
WHY IS THIS SO DEEP T ^ T BTS WHYYY STAHPPPPP
The theory does make sense though..
didn't you see what was standing over the picture what Jin look at .... It was on German
dilan _168 I saw that but unfortunately I can't understand German nor do I know someone who can translate it for me. :(
clarowan ,,You must still have chaos in your mind to be able to bear a dancing star" translator:)
dilan _168 Is there a reason why it was german?
Viviena The original book written by Hermann Hesse was in German. The text must've been in the story or may have been put in German to go along with the original 1st publish of the story which was in German. :)
“You Must have Chaos Within Yourself In Order To Give Birth To a Dancing Star”-Friedrich Nietzsche(who was a German philosopher.)
This just blew my mind
Best analysis
Omg you should make more videos like this, they are amazing
Jorike22 Thank you! :) I'd love to do this more if I had more time, it just so happened that I just graduated when the BST mv came out haha
Thank you for the amazing theory!
Oh my god this is genius, you are genius, bts and bighit are all geniuses..
Was i the only one who cried when Demian left. First I thought he died because of the war... but now I don't know... but I'm still sad because I shipped Demian and Sinclair together. They were so cute... so I'm still crying because I'm sad 😢😢😢
The Alien Mask Sinclair was not schizophrenic.
sinclair was in love with damien mother or he was schizophrenic.. I dont know
Yes, finally there's someone who shipped them together... while reading the story, I too felt Sinclair was romantically attracted to Demian as well but then he's attracted to Eva as well and sincr Demian died after the war, I believed the two of them (Sinclair and Eva) lived together (Eva too had a slight likening towards Sinclair)
@@baeofmoon7793 actually Herman Hesse had mental issues and i think Demian was his delusion. He wrote about his imaginery brother, master, soulmate whatever. And when war came to his life, he forced to go real world and demian dissapeared. (it is my opinion)
@@vsneagaa2345 yes it makes sense
THIS IS MY FAV THEORY I GOT GOOSEBUMPSS
Thank you so much!
Okay wow. I didn't know this. I did come up with an interpretation similar, but I had no idea it was a book. Wow.
God, how do they even get so creative?!?! 😵 💖💖
my boy jin be having a lot of stories of him being the main character 🤭🤭🤭🤭
Also just to add since people might take the kiss out of context... demian kissed Sinclair because he was told to by Eva.
Now we need theories for the Japanese version please.
Andrea Edison just watched the mv while I was out. Will try to sit down and make some time for the mv this weekend. :)
Thanks a lotttt 😘😘❤️❤️
i was shock with someone's voice and its started with the bird...phewww
great video!
this makes me want to reread demian xD Great book, I´d recommend this book to anyone
Okay I understand everything but I’m question is why they choose this book or theme
Mainly because it deals with adulthood, maturation, youth. Like how Sinclair, the child of 10+ age encountered with the dark world by lieing about stealing the apples to Kromer (who was already indulged in darkness), his constant battle as he grew up with what's right and what's wrong( more accurately: what's permittable and what's forbidden) Since he was raised in light world (world of innocence, purity, law) so when he came in contact with the other world (a forbidden world where slaughtering, robbery, crime took place) he was in dilemma with what's right and what's not. And then he started his journey to discover his life, he meets demian who informs him abt abraxas, a mix of satan and god. He encourages Sinclair to accept both the good and the evil sides and leaves him to decide what's permitted and what's forbidden... sorry I got into detail... but since bts are youth here by using Demian they're showing the life of a youth, how he struggles with life, with good and bad and how youth learns to grow from such experiences.
this is great and i love it a lot! I'd like to ask tho, couldn't you also see Suga as the temptation? When he first covers Jimin's eyes, the neon sign in the background says "the temptation". And he's also the one who keeps covering Jimin's eyes, with blindfolds in the apple scene for example. I understood that as him blinding Jimin, literally, like temptation often does.
Thanks so much it helped in my critical analysis for the story Demian 🎉
I wish if you could elaborate the meaning of the highlighted sentences.
And the theory was great. I never thought Suga could be both kromer and then Pistorius too... great work...
So interesting, Im gonna read that book!!😍😍🔥
WOW, OMG..... IT'S TRUE..... I LOVE THE BOOK AND I THOUGH THE SAME ON THIS VIDEO, MAN, IMPRESSIVE.
Very good video! I still don't get the kissing scene with the statue. Jin(Sinclair) kisses the statue(Abraxas) , in the book Demian kisses Sinclair. How can I understand that V/Demian has no wings/scars where the wings were?
rebelliot abraxas is the persian god of good and evil which is a combination of franz kromer[v] and demian[suga] . the kiss is a representation that sinclair has accepted these 2 into himself making it a part of himself. jin kissing the abraxas statue is like a form of enlightment because jin[sinclair] has finally accepted all good and evil into him
Thank you! It is what michelle said, the kissing was a representation of accepting the evil. I think of it as a metaphor for maturity. Someone who was so innocent, to the point that he was naive has finally encountered something evil. He was not swallowed by the evil but rather, through evil he gained wisdom/maturity. I interpret it as Demian representing Abraxas or Sinclair seeing Abraxas through Demian since Demian was the one who mainly influenced Sinclair (or mentored him through maturity or as sparknotes would describe, self-discovery). Demian disappeared at the end of the book, we don't know what happened. I assumed that he died since the last time Sinclair and Demian met was when they were in the hospital after a war. Demian said that he must go now which is usually interpreted as "I'm dying/giving up" and what happens when an angel loses its wings? They die (physically or their identity as an angel dies since wings are an important characteristic). Also, the scene where they show V with his scars, it was a dark room and he was the only figure in there. In animes (lol) or in some of the movies I watched, that setting usually meant that you're inside of something or you are in another dimension. In the book, Demian tells Sinclair that he can't PHYSICALLY come to Sinclair anymore but rather, Sinclair can find Demian within him.
This is so helpful, you should add it to the vid (If that can happen). Thanks very much
demian is sinclair. the whole book is based on carl jung's theory of individualism. sinclair is the ego, demian is the self and frau eva is the anima. they are all the same person. sinclair kisses the statue as a symbolism of accepting the unconscious self which is demian.
I have never studied this much deeply on any topic with a lot of intrest in school 🤣🤣
This video does not only show the connection (of the wings album) with demian but also the meaning of demian. 👍
wow... the lines I saw here is from the same copy of Demian I'm reading right now.. I better appreciated this mv because of that... :) :) :)
what copy were you reading?
I have here the pdf file. :)
can you send me?
Sure! Just give me your email address. I'll forward it to you. :D
Do you have twitter? I'll dm you it if it's okay
this is a great theori and its really well explained the only defualt is that in the music video, if you watch behind the scenes, it was yoongi the one who was supposed to cover jin's eyes not taehyung.
Just reacted to this video. Wow what an interesting concept. BTS is really powerful
This makes sense now but it’s all so confusing when it comes together 😝
FINALLY I UNDERSTOOD !!!!!
Wait, wait, wait.... did nobody even noticed the german quote Jin was looking at?
GScrazykawaii it's Nietzsche's saying: one must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.
Well, yes I know that, but does it have any connection to the book of Demian? Im sorry if you think im stupid for asking. I haven't read the book.
Hi! Sorry for the late reply. :) I think the quote encompasses the message they're trying to convey with BST. As Demian is a coming of age story, BST is inspired from that - people going through something to grow into someone better/maturity. And the Nietzsche's quote itself does mean that we go through these things in life so we can grow for the better. Doesn't have any direct relation to Demian per se, but both do have the same message they intend to deliver. :)
EDIT: Doing more research, apparently Nietszche's ideas inspired the Demian. :)
Hey could you get into Frau Eva and explain on who she is? BTW you summarized the theory so well you deserve an award *entire world applauds*
Camryn Lafleur thank you! I'll try to find the time! :)
Now I'm reading Demian, because I was wonder Because od Bts. And really it reminds me BTS video's main thoughts.
I have a question for you. In the end of the video Jin is seen staring at his reflection, and then taking a quick glance down at the flowers beside him. But also the flowers in the mirror are not white lilies but instead a purple flower that I don't recognize. I know white lilies symbolize the Virgin Mary's Purity and her devotion to her role of Queen of Angels. But do the purple flowers mean something? Please help me(:
Sadly, I'm not an expert on flowers so I can't say what the purple flowers are or what they mean. :( I researched and they look like gayfeathers or cocksombs but as I said, I'm no expert. lol.
If V is demian then did demian have wings that were pulled out . That's the only thing I didn't understand
I learned something thx to bts
I'm going to read that book now omg
the *BEST*
currently still something that i don't quite understand; why does JIn's face crack at the end? is it another symbolism of being exposed and/or accepting both "realms" of good and bad?
I interpret it as Sinclair's naivety finally cracking (aka this is the symbolism for maturity). Jin represented innocence and naivety and he cracked after he kissed the statue (=interaction with Abraxas) which meant he finally discovered and understood and interacted with the "bad".
I totally agree with you. Great video!
My head is aching
But wait wait
I'm not sure I understand right
So Jin at the end of the MV went to the dark side? Or what
I love namjoon's voice
I Like 'Blood, Sweat And Tears'... I Love BTS.. That's It...!
Can someone please explain to me what jin was breaking free from when he kissed the statue. And also can someone summarize the entire meaning of this.
I always thought Jin was Damien, not Sinclair 🧐🤔
dang okay this is really confusing i dont get it at all!! but this will always be one of my favorite bts music video because the song is just so good and the video is just so beautiful
Wow
Amazing
In the behind the scene, Suga was supposed to cover Jin’s eyes, but then suddenly changed role with V...
Error error brain is confused
The truth behind the song was a group boys who had fallen under temptation and the statue of the devil at the end breaking was bts breaking free and going to God and when it showed v back was where the wings were and the idea was god pulled the wings out of him and then he found god so that was the real like idea of the song
I came here because it mentioned Demian by hesse
thank you so much for cracking the code...wow i feel dumb....
Hello! I am 13 years old and I guessed half of the story correctly. BTW thxx for telling...I am not that bad at solving BTS theories yeh.😎😎😆😆
Jin said in the bts of the mv shoot that his character was not on the innocent side
Sheeit
YALL WHWRE CAN I FIND THE CLIP OF THAY BURNING HAWK PAINTING AGAIN
BADLY NEEDED THE CLIP 😭
srslly amazing
This by far makes more sense.
That's also kind of creepy...
Then what is j-hope in this story??
He kind of relates to the mother figure, as well as his song 'Mama'.
