The writing is SO GOOD! Comedy (musical or otherwise) is hard enough, but being able to pivot into an emotional moment that feels both genuine and earned? Amazing.
"Follow the golden rule" being twisted (ha!) into "Follow the gold and rule" is just such incredible wordplay. This musical is a work of genius from start to finish.
Another clever bit of the music for Golden Rule is the style. All the songs in the present story are parodies of Renaissance era Disney but in the flashback the musical style is 1950s Disney (think Bare Necessities from Jungle Book).
Joe Walker really killed his performances in this musical both as the ex Royal Vizier and as Prince Achmed - but then he ALWAYS kills it. He was amazing as B@man, he was great as Voldemort, he's just always great
I don’t know if you know this or if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I feel like something that may help with your analysis is knowing that yes twisted is a Disney parody, but it is also just as much a Wicked parody!
It's an Aladdin parody, and a Wicked parody, and a parody of the history of Disney, all wrapped in one, that somehow still manages to bring in original humor and plot points.
19:30 - it was hot for Dylan Saunders in that role, that sweat is no joke. There's a costume he wears later that couldn't be laundered, and apparently by the time the production wrapped it was rank. Gotta applaud the guy for putting up with that while delivering his incredible vocals.
A lot of Starkid's musicals, including the parody ones usually have some kind of deeper message, usually about the capacity human(oid)s have for love and warmth but also for evil and greed. Even Firebringer, Starkid's underrated musical about cavewomen discovering fire is very much a "are humans ready to have this responsibility and can they do it without killing eachother in the process?" type thing. Mortius, I think you've set yourself on a long and wonderful journey if you decide to watch them all, even if you don't put it on youtube. Give them all a chance, including the ones with TinCan Bros like Spies are Forever, don't just get trapped in the Hatchetfield Universe if you can help it (even though that trilogy is great too)
"That sweat bead is a paid actor in this moment" is something you will have the chance to say again, in a very different context. I look forward to it (and might also have to go watch that moment the second I finish this video)
I love that you said Dylan’s beautiful vocal performance came out of nowhere for you because his literal first introduction in any StarKid show (a very potter musical from 2009) is a beautiful and hilarious looooooooooong sustain 😂
We did warn you on the very first video that you would not be able to escape Starkid once you started- Now get ready for... Emotions! They pull you in with the humor, and suddenly you're crying about anthropomorphic penises (not this musical, and no story spoilers for any of the others)
Fun fact: the “follow the golden rule/whoever has the gold makes the rules” joke was first told in a Wizard of Id newspaper comic from either the 1950s or 1960s, and Disney borrowed it for their version of Aladdin. And then Starkid added even more value to the joke with “follow the golden rule/follow the gold AND rule.” Perfection. Also, side note, I love the pink shirt and tie with the dark blue vest. Underrated color combination. 🤌🤌🤌
I definitely felt similarly - Act 1 was fun and silly but I didn't really see where things were going. And then Act 2 came and I feel like Twisted has the most emotionally satisfying endings of any of the starkid musicals I've seen. Incredible and insane how everything ends up coming together.
HEY!! if you like twisted i highly recommend the hatchet field trilogy which are some of my favorite musicals. the watchlist is "the guy who didnt like musicals" then "black friday" finally "nerdy prudes must die"
For extra context for people who don't know, Nightmare Time are like extra stories for the Hatchet Field Trilogy that were made during pandemic, meaning that were largely recorded over zoom calls. Obviously not unwatchable, but it's definitely a very different viewing experience.
@@cheyannegiles9772I think of them as expanded universe content that enriches your viewing experience but isn't necessary for enjoying and understanding the trilogy. I genuinely think you would enjoy The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, it’s an original musical by Starkid. It has some of my favorite music in a Starkid production (my favorite being from Nerdy Prudes Must Die)
@7:00, I'd been meaning to mention, from a composer/arranger's point of view, that string motif Casper noticed in Legally Blonde is tremolo playing and it's very very common for TENSION, drama and/or suspense! So by Casper's theory it's very possibly or likely that the composers used the tremolos to signify the tension of the big changes happening in scene, like when Warner proposes to Vivienne before So Much Better! I find it very interesting because they also use a tremolo violin in Gay or European (listen out during "That is the elephant in the room.."), and in that case they're playing up to perfection the weight of Nikos' sexuality in Brooke's case.
Ooooh, YESSS!! And so, it begins: the weird appreciation for starkid musicals😂 Also, i am SO IN LOVE with the amount of references you make that i haven't even thought of😂 And idk if you've noticed, but the guy who played prince Achmed is the same guy who plays the royal vizier here! :D
This was so fun to watch in premiere with peeps after finishing a paper deadline. Follow the Gold and Rule is such a banger twist of what Ja'far wants here
May i just say: I love those "outro-undertitles". Like "treat this video the way you'd want to be treated - go like it" is actually such a banger! I always look at them because they are generally so much fun,; This one i liked especially much
Honestly we are going to just start requesting you react to more Starkid productions. There are so many, the guy who didn’t like musicals, holy musicals b@tman, firebringer, trail to Oregon.and more!
i only discovered this channel bc of the twisted reaction videos and i'm so excited to see what you think of the rest of the show! (made me rewatch twisted also lol) your analysis is fascinating, i really appreciate it bc i watched this show in 2018/2019 as a teenager and mostly enjoyed the silliness above all else, but it makes interesting points! i'll check out some other reactions too, but probably only of shows i know, so no legally blonde

I love NPMD 😂 but shouldn’t he watch TGWDLM and Black Friday first? If he watches NPMD after those two, he’ll catch on to some of the inside jokes a lot more, and have an overall more enjoyable time! I think it’d be worth the wait :)
@chopin7788 eeh. I've only watched NPMD so far and tbh the reactions I've seen of it are kind of grating BECAUSE they watched the others first and are then just pointing out the jokes I don't get, or the difference in actors, instead of.. like. Appreciating the story in and of itself. It's a very me-problem, I'm aware.
@ Ah, I see how it might look different from the perspective of someone who has only watched NPMD. The way I see it is that people *are* appreciating the story itself, but the story is within a much bigger picture, so reactors are also taking the time to enjoy how it further contextualizes the entire multiverse it’s a part of. In a way, it actually makes them appreciate the story better, just in a way you don’t understand yet since you haven’t seen the others (which is okay!) On it’s own, it’s a really great story (and honestly my favorite of the trilogy)! But from the viewpoint of someone who has watched the trilogy in order, I got to enjoy NPMD in a deeper way. For example, the appearance of the Lords in Black was more meaningful. But overall I get where you’re coming from.
I sincerely hope that you go through all of the starkid musicals eventually. They just have so many and they're all fun rides. The quality of the songs, the vibes and all the amazingly talented actors and actresses (and the fact that they release these FULLY on youtube? Free for everyone to enjoy and experience without having to go to a theater in person?? They are just phenomenal. I'll try and leave random comments as well to help boost the algorithm with some comments with all of these as well :D (and link these to other starkid fan friends)
Ooh boy if you think this episode made you love this musical, just wait for the next part. Well, I guess you’ve already seen it by now. I guess I’ll be the one waiting for the next episode. But yeah, I’m excited.
So excited to see you reacting to this, and would love to see your reactions to other older Starkid stuff. Especially Firebringer, Trail to Oregon, and Starship!
Ooh I can't wait for your reaction to the rest of this musical! While it's still a parody, there are so many amazing moments in this, and you're just scratching the surface! This will forever be my favorite Starkid show!
That moment on your face when you realized the wordplay between "Golden Rule" and "Gold and Rule" was so good!!! I hope you keep enjoying this show, I'm excited to see what else you notice!

Am I crazy for thinking that Dylan (Ja'far) sounds like Christopher Jackson? Maybe not as much in this show, but in general across all shows I feel like they sound similar.
None of them are actually full parodies of Disney songs! The instrumentation and vocals are all slightly different. They call attention to different Disney tropes, but they fully wrote all the music and vocals themselves!
Hey, listen. I was first introduced to Starkid in ~2015 and have watched Twisted countless times and I only realized in the past year that 2D's= 2D animation, so you caught on much faster than I did! In my defense, i think Princess and the Frog was their first 3D movie and that came out when I was like 9, so I wasn't fully aware of the whole 2D vs 3D debate at the time
I'm begging you to watch Starkid's Starship after this. It has some of my favorite vocal performances and it also a bit of a send-up of a Disney Movie (Pocahontas)
Fun fact: Dylan Saunders (Ja’far) played Van Gogh in the Starry Musical about his life that, if not made by Starkid, then other Starkid members participated in as well. I’m not sure if there is any visuals of the performance, but the entire cast album is on RUclips. I highly recommend you give it a listen, even if it’s just on your own time and not for the channel
Your reaction to Dylan earnestly - and beautifully - singing 'Sands of Time' is hilarious btw. 😂 EDIT: I really hope you check out their latest shows too. They've only gotten better over the years plus the last trio (the Hatchetfield trilogy) of musicals are originals. 💃
God I love this musical, I had my parents watch with me on my birthday just so they would know what I was talking about, when i ranted. Ps they also loved the deep voice guy, he was their favorite.
Honestly, I'd do some of the older starkid stuff first before the Hatchetfield Trilogy if you think you'll do a lot of their stuff. It's hard to see the quality of the videos on some of the older ones though I love them. otherwise, if you're limited on yime, jump to the trilogy.
Ghrowing it out there, since no one else really has, watch A Very Potter Musical. While a bit can be hard to hear as its their 2nd production after Me and My Dick (i believe) it IS one fully subtitled and one of their bests. It has some of my favorite performances from the cast.
When the silly Disney satire suddenly veers into genuine sincerity
Team starkid excells at tgat emoyional whiplash of genuinly hitting you right in the feels inbetwren silly and unhinged parody stuff

Hey, listen. I was first introduced to Starkid in ~2015 and have watched Twisted countless times and I only realized in the past year that 2D's= 2D animation, so you caught on much faster than I did! In my defense, i think Princess and the Frog was their first 3D movie and that came out when I was like 9, so I wasn't fully aware of the whole 2D vs 3D debate at the time
Loving all of Mortius’ Aladdin quotes dropping in!
And here comes the emotional gut punch
I'm begging you to watch Starkid's Starship after this. It has some of my favorite vocal performances and it also a bit of a send-up of a Disney Movie (Pocahontas)
Fun fact: Dylan Saunders (Ja’far) played Van Gogh in the Starry Musical about his life that, if not made by Starkid, then other Starkid members participated in as well. I’m not sure if there is any visuals of the performance, but the entire cast album is on RUclips. I highly recommend you give it a listen, even if it’s just on your own time and not for the channel
16:58 I watched the video before i saw this reaction. And I instantly felt that way too about him!
If it makes you feel better, the first time I watched this show I thought the recurring 2D joke was somehow related to boobs lol
Hehehehe. We have him.
this is amzing
Also the art of murder pilot has Joey richer and Lauren Lopez who are apart of starkids are in the pilot xxx
God I love this musical, I had my parents watch with me on my birthday just so they would know what I was talking about, when i ranted.
Ps they also loved the deep voice guy, he was their favorite.
Btw the former vizier is played by the same guy who got his ass eaten by a tiger
I find it really funny that Lauren choreographed this show and is the only one who fell out of step at the last "always our philosophy"
you're the first reactor i've seen notice the 'golden rule > gold and rule' thing!
I’m just gonna request the HATCHETFIELD TRILOGY on every video of this series I think you’d enjoy it so much
