- n 1857, back when it was rare to come across a building that was more than 7 stories high, the Otis Elevator Company rocked the world by installing the first-ever commercial passenger elevator at 488 Broadway in New York City. It moved at an unimaginable speed for its time -40 feet per minute! Doesn’t sound like much, but remember - this was way before cars came around!
A lot has changed since then. Life’s getting faster, buildings are getting taller, and you can no longer impress anyone with an elevator that travels 6 times slower than the average person walks! So, companies designing and constructing skyscrapers must think over their vertical transportation systems.

- The CTF Finance Centre in Guangzhou, China is the 7th tallest building in the world, standing proudly at 1,740 feet at its highest point.
- The building is home to the world's fastest elevator! It was opened and recorded in the Guinness World Records in September 2019. It sky-rockets from the ground to the 95th floor in just 43 seconds!
- Think you could handle riding in an elevator moving almost highway speeds at 47 miles per hour?
- Most standard elevators go up to a maximum of about 20 mph.
- There are special rollers in four corners of the cabin to absorb unpleasant vibrations. The brakes are made of heat-resistant materials that’ll ensure it stops smoothly even in an emergency.

- The Bailong Elevator. The name of this elevator that reaches a height of 1,070 feet on the side of a cliff translates as the Hundred Dragons Elevator. It was opened in 2002, and you can spot fantastic views through its glass doors.
- AquaDom. Would you like to travel between floors in the middle of an 82-foot-tall cylindrical aquarium full of over 260,000 gallons of water and 1,500 fish?
- The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat elevator in the world, lifting vessels 79 feet from one canal into another.
- “Elevador Lacerda”. This one isn't just an elevator but a legit means of transportation connecting the “Lower” city to the “Upper” one. It transports over 30,000 people a day, traveling to a height of 236 feet in 38 seconds.
- SkyView, Ericsson Globe. At 279 feet tall and 361 feet in diameter, Ericsson Globe is the largest spherical building in the world. You can see a concert or sports game inside (probably hockey!), and take a ride in the glass elevators on the outside.

I was in the Disneyland hotel elevator in the 90s during a strong earthquake. The elevator stopped between floors while it banged from side to side. It was full of people and everyone was trying hard not to completely panic because there were a bunch of kids in there with us. The claustaphobia was so intense!!
One dad was going, "Isn't this a FUN ride?!" to his daughter, trying to reassure her, and we're all trying to agree in high, frightened yelps...

Quite impossible because there are breaks below the lifts speed, if it goes too fast up or down it would automatically deploy the break.

I refuse to ride in elevators since I've been in 4 that were stuck. I have never had to be rescued, but some elevators in old cities like San Francisco were extremely old in the 60s and 70s...they were always dropping, lurching and swaying...

I guessed the first one US because of house archtecture. 2nd about mountain in China which is in battlefield map. Aqudom I guesses in Italy. From Scotland I was correct because I saw one documentry. My last correct guess was about Sweden again house structure. 4 from 6 not bad.

I went with friends that worked for the Haines CrissCross telephone books, to St. Louis to deliver books. Some of the high rise office buildings had many elevators that each only went to different 10 floor levels in the building. When going down, when it passed the lowest floor it served, you almost become weightless.

And the Express elevators in each building(tower) can reach the top floor in 45 seconds and the elevators are so fast peoples ears in the elevators pop due to rapid change in air pressure.

I was lucky enough to visit the Jin Mao Tower on my recent trip to China. Its elevator goes 9.1 m/s and takes 45 seconds to reach from the basement to the 88th floor. Not the fastest, but still awesome.

Could care less about these" Hellavators". I can't believe that I havnt read Any comments about the "Sears" Tower in Chi- Town. I know I know, technically it's Not Sears anymore, some REDICULOUS foreign name I can't say. But I'm a Chi Town gurl and watched that badass building being built way back wen. Its Always gonna be Sears to me. Its been years since I've lived there, but I believe the observation deck is on the 101 floor and the elevators are specifically for that, and if I remember right, something like 3 min to go that 101.
